Default Council of Five Nations 2017

I know its a ways off but just a heads up for the upcoming Council of Five Nations...on Saturday, September 30th, I'll be running two Wings games.

Afternoon time slot will be 'Dragons Over the Reich',

Over the later war years German scientists had been working on cloning Pterodactyl but the end result even surprised them. Some recovered DNA from remote northern Norway produced something far more successful than they ever had hoped for.
Rumors and spy reports were getting out of hand in the spring of 1945. Allied bombers and even escort fighters that were lucky to return did so with scorched wings and fuselages. No one could tell for sure what was going on over the mountains of Bavaria. Stunned, wide eyed airmen only repeated, dragons!
The Allies finally put together what was going on and organized a daring raid to the breeding facility deep in Bavaria...
B-24s with escorting 'Little Friends' vs 109s and 190s...and Dragons!

The evening game will be a 100th Anniversary of a German bomber raid on London. Gothas vs whatever the RFC can muster.

I'll post the link here to Council when it is available.

    Link to Council is 'HERE'

Glad you'll be heading to CoFN. We will definitely have more pilots than at Huzzah. CoFN usually has a very good Wings turnout.

I was in Schenectady a couple of times on business in 1973. Awesome place, so much history. You are making me wish I could return for such a cool sounding gaming event. At the very least post pictures!

    Hi,
Does " whatever the RFC can muster." mean we can fly our own planes (if approved by the distinguished GM)?

Bill, sure, if you want to fly your own, thumbs up. I was thinking of throwing together any Home Defense type planes I have. I want to use my 1 1/2 Strutter comic!

Great ! Thanks, although I'm not sure that my Snipe, Camel, or Bristol 2Fb qualify as "home defense" type aircraft...I want to be historically accurate on what I fly...

The Snipe would definitely not be available as this will be 30 September 1917.

RNAS Camels flew Home Defence against daylight raids from Manston & Eastchurch from July 1917..
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopwit...night_fighting

Bristol fighters also flew Home Defence but that might have been post the date you're playing.

I posted this thread last year listing RNAS & RFC aircraft and their respective squadrons used for home defense against the daylight and nighttime Gotha raids targeting London -

    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...aids-1917-1918

Each of the seventeen London raids is examined in detail, the first raid below is an example:

ENGLANDGESCHWADER DAYLIGHT RAID 13 JUNE 1917

    13 JUNE 1917 (Daylight Raid)

Kampfgeschwader 3 der Oberste Heeresleitung (Kagohl 3) - 20 Gothas (2 returned early)

Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) – 33 aircraft
    Dover: 3 x Sopwith Pup, 1 x Sopwith Baby
    Eastchurch: 2 x Bristol Scout, 1 x Sopwith 1˝ Strutter
    Felixstowe: 2 x Sopwith Schneider, 5 x Sopwith Baby
    Grain: 2 x Sopwith Pup, 2 x Sopwith Baby
    Manston: 4 x Bristol Scout, 1 x Sopwith Pup, 2 x Sopwith Triplane
    Westgate: 4 x Sopwith Baby
    Walmer: 4 x Sopwith Pup
Royal Flying Corps (RFC) – 55 aircraft
    No. 37 Squadron: 1 x BE2e, 1 x BE12, 1 x BE12a, 1 x RE7, 5 x Sopwith 1˝ Strutter
    No. 39 Squadron: 1 x BE2c, 2 x BE2e, 3 x BE12, 3 x BE12a, 1 x FK8
    No. 50 Squadron: 1 x BE2c, 1 x BE12, 2 x BE12a, 5 x FK8, 1 x RE8, 1 x Vickers ES1
    No. 65 Squadron: 2 x DH5
    No. 78 Squadron: 1 x BE12a
    No. 98 Depot Squadron (DS): 1 x BE2d, 1 x BE2e, 1 x BE12a
No. 35 Training Squadron (TS): 2 x Bristol Fighter
    No. 40 TS: 2 x Sopwith Pup
    No. 62 TS: 1 x Sopwith Pup
    No. 63 TS: 1 x Sopwith Pup
    No. 2 Aircraft Acceptance Park (AAP): 2 x DH4, 1 x DH5
    No. 8 AAP: 1 x DH4, 1 x DH5, 1 x FE8, 1 x Sopwith 1˝ Strutter, 1 x Bristol Fighter, 1 x RE8
    Orfordness Experimental Station: 2 x Sopwith Triplane, 2 x DH4

AAR – One Gotha left the formation and turned southwards towards the Kent coastal town of Margate on which it dropped five bombs. Three Gothas left the formation, two peeling off towards Shoeburyness, where they dropped six bombs. The remaining Gothas dropped their bombs on London.

Although some 94 individual defensive sorties were flown by the RFC and RNAS, the time it took to gain the Gotha’s operating height, and the short time the enemy formation was over the city meant that only 11 got close enough to the departing raiders to open fire – all without serious effect. One of these, a Bristol Fighter from No. 35 (Training) squadron, finally caught up with three straggling Gothas over Ilford, Essex. Flown by Capt C.W.E. Cole-Hamilton, with Capt C.H. Keevil as observer, it closed to attack, but in the exchange that followed a bullet pierced Keevil’s neck and killed him. Defenseless, Cole-Hamilton turned sharply away and headed for home.

Eleven of the London AA guns opened fire on the raiders but scored no success. All the Gothas returned safely to their bases, having caused Ł125,953 worth of material damage in London, killing 162 and injuring 426 – this raid inflicting the highest single casualty total of the campaign on the city – and leaving the Home Defence organization exposed and largely powerless in its wake.

Wings of Glory aircraft directly involved in historical action:
    - Gotha G.IV/V (3)
    - Bristol Fighter (1)

Other Wings of Glory aircraft deployed:
    - Airco DH.4
    - RAF RE8
    - Sopwith Triplane
    - Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter

As you can see, the Bristol F2b was there from the start.

As this will be a 100th anniversary game on September 30th.... my meager research has it as a night raid. I read only 4 Gothas reached London. Carl's link above mentions 6 Gothas reaching London on the night of the 30th. I'll have BEs, Strutters, Camels, FK8s and an FE. No Bristols, sorry Bill!

I'm working on some night rules. Trying to keep it simple but have the feel of a night action.

Nazi scientists were keen on providing Wonder Weapons for the Fuhrer. They had successfully cloned pteradactyl
DNA but were trying for something more deadly. Some curious remains found in the mountains of Norway
piqued their interest... Early in 1945 the Allies were not sure what was going on. Planes were returning from over
Germany blackened, scorched and partially melted. Spies finally answered the question. A large bombing raid
was sent to destroy the breeding and research facility deep in the heart of Germany. Fly ME 109Ks and FW
-190s defending the Fatherland or Mustangs and Thunderbolts escorting B-24s. Besides fighting the enemy planes you
will have to deal with the Nazi scientist's creations, Dragons!

Council was fun as usual. A bit lower turnout this year but we still got to fly so can't complain. Last night when I got home I edited the photos I took but didn't have the time to post, too tired so went to bed. I'll get them here tonight.

As a teaser I'll report that 3 Nazi dragons were shot down but at least one B-24 (probably 2) would get through to bomb the research/breeding facility.

In the Night Over London, 2 Gothas got through with 3 being shot down. The Gothas were AI flown but I took over flying the final Gotha as the leading AI Gotha slithered past the Home Defense to drop it's deadly load on the capitol. Being tail-end-Fritz I drew the combined attention of the 6 Home Defense planes flying. I zigged and zagged as best I could. The lights of London were in sight. When there were multiple planes firing I decided to have the pilots roll off to have a sequence of who shot when as I wanted to give credit to only one person for the kill, if they could shoot me down. Then poor Bill was about to shoot and I flipped a pair of cards and Boom, we thought he had shot down the last Gotha. Ah, being the mean gamemaster that I am I had to put that result on hold and have the forgotten roll off. The sequence had the Gotha firing first so the Boom now went to Bill and down he went, cursing all the way. (I'm glad there was a large table between he and I so he couldn't reach me!) A Schenectady local, Jennifer Paparman then shot down the Gotha just before I could get it off the mat.

The short story goes... Nazi scientists created something evil. The Allies found out and sent a flight of B-24s to destroy the research/breeding facility. The Luftwaffe send up some fighters against the bomber raid and the facility releases some of their dragons. The dragons get a bit confused in the air and end up attacking anything randomly.
