Thread: Bombing the Reich at Williamsburg Muster

Default Bombing the Reich at Williamsburg Muster

Richard Schwab organized two very exciting and action packed games using the WWII rules with his impressive collection of 1/144th scale models. The first mission saw me leading a small formation of B.17's towards a fighter drome Nazi in occupied France as part of the build up to Operation Overlord; this put us (just) within the maximum range of RAF Spitfires, and our "Little Friends" provided some very good cover against the swarms of angry Luftwaffe fighters set to intercept.

Mission two was set in 1944 with formations of B.17's and B.24's striking deep into the Fatherland. The liberation of France allowed our P.47's, the new Mk. IX Spitfires and P.51's to fly close escort all the way to the target, however the Nazis had also deployed more heavily armed and armored interceptors and this was going to be no milk run.

Despite the courageous efforts of the escorts, some fighters broke through to the bomber boxes. The lead ship had one engine hit and the pilot wounded, but bravely the copilot pressed on to the target, however a vicious firing pass hit another Fort in the bomb bay. No chutes were seen as the bomber plunged earthward

Scores of Nazi fighter were blown out of the sky and both targets were heavily damaged, but at a terrible cost for the 8th Bomber Command with 50% losses - a black day for the USAAF

Thanks. I've been home for 12 hours and I'm still picking bits of kitchen sink out of my flying gear!

Those planes look massive, and the mat was fantastic. Great job running the games. Fun all the way.

Thanks for all the compliments gentlemen, but my role (a la Clark Gable) was manning a gunner's station and taking photos - full credit for designing, presenting and running these two incredible missions goes to Col. Schwab, our illustrious VA Flight CO

Looks like a great game and AAR. Make even more sorry I missed the action.

That looks to have been a good time. I did notice in one of the photos, however, a lot of zeroes drawn for the bomb tokens. The "Bomb Girls" back home better step up their game on quality control.
