Ronald are you asking how many planes in the game overall, or how many planes one person controls at a time?
If I try to control more than two planes at once I get hopelessly confused... my poor old brain just can't handle it..

Ronald & myself have gone on many a mission with almost everyone from our aerodrome!
But alas, came back nearly alone...
We have played with 5 planes each more than once. Joe
The most I've flown at one time is two. Never had the need to fly more so far.
Tom
We usually fly 3 planes per side...for a total of 6. More than that gets a little crowded...both on the playing surface and in our heads!
ours are usually 6 to 8, we often have around 6 or 7 players show up, so sometimes someone flys 2 at once.
I usually fly with 2 plane, but i like much more to fly with one.

When there is 4 players sometimes I'll fly 3 recon/bombers against 3 fighters. I will fly in formation as mush as possible. If a one of the planes have to much damage I'll make a run to the friendly side of the table.
The most I have flown personally at one time is four. One bomber and three escort Camels. To identify each Camel I put a sticky dot on the flying base and a similar colour on the control card. Now they have Flight letters on the wings it is a lot easier. My three Jasta 11 planes are of course much easier to identify with the distinctive personal markings. I think I could run 5 of those.

Same for me actually. I flew 2 RE8's and 2 Camels. Both pairs started off using shared cards and flew 'in formation' until they started the bomb run or were engaged in the case of the fighters. It made things go quicker in the first couple of turns
Hunter and I typically fly 3 each against each other. We tried 4 each once, but it just got too confusing trying to keep track of rudder jams and other special damages. For the two of us, 6 planes on the mats at one time seems to be enough.
However, I wouldn't mind playing in a larger sortie with more people and more planes. I think a 10 or 12 plane furball would be fun.
I don't like to fly more then 1 plane at a time. Its too easy to coordinate attacks if you are controlling more then one plane. For pilots w/o radio, with guiding being only hand signals once they leave the ground, the tone of the game changes dramatically when 1 pilot is flying multiple planes.
Of course, if you are only 2 people and want to have more of a dogfight, I guess you would have do do it that way.

Usually 2 at a time (outside of solo games, where you can double that), most I've ever used at once was 8 (again in a solo game) but that's a bit too much for me to handle. Really slows the game down, even without using altitude.
One or two planes. Sometimes three minis, no more.
Only 1 at a time for me. Any more and I would not have room to put my Pimms beside my game board......
You will never see me controlling more than three--I prefer to stick to two-plane "elements", the basic building-block of modern air combat as developed independently by both Thach ("Thach Weave") and Chennault, evolving into the (with 2 elements together) Schwarm of Me262's and Finger Four of later jets, and the single-element Loose Deuce that has been used by jet pairs ever since Korea that I was taught. (Though I STILL drive "Col. Norm" nuts with my preference to hunt solo in combat-simulations... then again, I usually fly birds big enough that I can rain hardware on the hapless fighters below all day and into the night. LOL)
Normally and preferred condition, I'd rather only fly one plane with a "wingman" handling a second, so I can be more "in character" and focused on getting the most out of my plane.
I play a lot of solo games and fly up to eight at a time for WoW and often with altitude, but with DoW it's a bit trickier, so often six or so... And yes, I do crash into my self now and again!
WW1 one plane only, but in WW2 I fly two planes.
I've only taken one up at a time. I suppose taking two is on my to-do list.
I think 2 for me is as much as I can handle.
Usually I play 2 but occasionally if on a 2 seater mission I add that one to the Mix.
Some of our chaps have tried 4 but ended up playing manouver cards from the wrong deck & that caused some hilarity & not a little imbarresment. (ever seen a Pfalz manouver like a Fokker Triplane??)
We'll frequently fly two planes apiece.
If we are playing DoW, we typically play where you don't look at the planes you have already laid down. With more than two planes, you tend to forget who is doing what.
Often two, on occasion three.
the group I play with are all willing to run 3, but universally prefer one or two.
I think 3 per side is a nice mixture if you're playing on a "standard" tabletop. If you jam a few tables together you could certainly get more in the air. A single player controlling 2 or 3 planes is about the limit. Beyond that people get slower, start bumping their planes into one another particularly when the plane is facing them...they forget to reverse everything.
The most we have played is three per person. But, as alluded to above we would prefer more people so we could just fly one plane and focus on it.
I have not tried more than three. Luckily most of our games involve 4-8 players so there is not a real need for multo plane control. I sub in as AI in the campaign to balance out one side or the other.
1 is great 2 is good 3 is ok 4 sucks I think that in my new campaign 2 will be the limit just two keep flow and we are not lacking players
I normally fly 2 planes or three planes at once. But I find I like flying four, kinda gives it the "Flight Formation" feeling.
Being the rookie pilot I am I am just flying with two planes at this time - hope to get more in the air as my skill allows me to handle
all with confidence!
I am luck to fly one but two is the limit.
i dont care for controlling more than one a/c at a time
The most I have flown is ten. It took a long time to plan the moves.
My buddy and I tend to fly three to five planes each using the altitude rules. There are the odd collisions, but that just adds to the fun.
One plane is too few for us, as the explosion can end the game prematurely.
In solo campaigns I have played with 2 (1 on 1) to 20+.
In club games 2 is my limit unless I'm controlling bombers that everyone else is trying to shoot down.
(although we did run a flight of giants game at WMMS where I was running some 36 Gotha's, Staakens, Freidrichshavens & Aeg's)
See you on the Dark Side......
I rarely fly more than 3 planes at a time. Very hard for me to do!
The problem with flying more than 1 plane is that you coordinate movement when in real life there was no R/T in WWI. We do use 2nd chance planes of lesser power in our games but they only appear after the players first one is shot down.
Baxter, I must disagree. Hand signals, wagging of wings, firing a short burst, etc were ways of signaling, crude yes. Formation flying and teamwork was practiced and constant discussion on tactics were common.
Francesco Baracca, also had develop a series of formations and tactics that enable him to lead all Italian pilots with thirty four confirm air victories. Most of his victories were shared because it was team work that was utilized ensured the victory not the individual. Of course there are the lone wolfs, Fonck being the best of them but, for the majority of aces it was tactics and teamwork.
Plus of course the Very pistol!

I prefer to fly only one airplane at a time...I guess you could say it's a "vested interest" thing to me. However, I'll fly two if there aren't enough players to create a real dogfight or fill out a proper mission.
My highest is now sixteen. super long time to plan.
Just played last night with my favorite wing man Joe. Had 16 planes on 3 mats. We controlled 2 Phonix D.Is, 2 Aviatik D.Is and 3 Albatros D.III 153 series against 6 Camels and 3 RE-8 controlled by AI. Used unreachable guns for all Austrian aicraft. We fought a desperate and close game with Joe saying we lost at one point but managed to eke out a victory, with luck we got an explosion card on an undamaged Camel that turned the tide. We only had 3 aircraft left the 2 Camels and 2 Re-8s were shot down. Only took 2.5 hours to play.
