I just wish people would stop calling it "a Japanese victory" -- yes, the US lost a CV, but they could afford it; most of the new-builds were coming on-line early the next year (_Essex_ was up and running late '42), so at worst the US advance was delayed. Meanwhile, Japan had lost yet another large batch of trained aircrews, which they couldn't replace. There was no way this battle, or any other this side of the Philippines, was going to result in the direction of the war changing back to Japan's favor.
