    Default Flashes Military Quiz #1

I have a Military Quiz book by John Pimlott that has sat neglected on a shelf for many years, so I thought I'd use it to stir the interest of, and torment, any forumers up for a challenge. If it gets you to look things up and expand your military knowledge then it has served its purpose.
There are no prizes - the answers will be posted below - you can mark yourselves and whoever claims the highest score is a clever old stick who can be smug that they have a broad knowledge of military history.
There are 21 questions in all - I knew 3 and guessed a 4th so I am a military history dunce - can you do better ?!

    1. What role did Odone Doria & Calos Grimaldi fulfil at Crécy 1346 ?
    2. Who was Emperor when Rome successfully invaded Britain ?
    3. Arsuf (1191) was the main triumph of which commander in the Third Crusade ?
    4. What was a calthrop ?
    5. What was a petronel ?
    6. What was lacking in the general who reconquered Italy for Emperor Justinian during the 6th century ?
    7. What were aiguillettes ?
    8. Which confederate commander was dubbed the 'King of Spades' ?
    9. Who led the relief force to Kandahar in the Afghan War of 1879-80 ?
    10. Where did 'Thornhill's Roughs' (also known as the Carving Knife Brigade') gain fame ?
    11. Where did Napoleon first employ his 'lozenge' attacking formation ?
    12. Which Union ironclad monitor was sunk at the Battle of MobileBay ?
    13. Who said, 'The object of artillery should not consist of killing men on the whole of the enemy's front but to overthrow it, to destroy parts of his front....then they obtain decisive results; they make a gap' ?
    14. Who, in 1902, said, 'We are a bloody cheerful-looking lot of British subjects' ?
    15. Where did the 'Tiger' beat the 'Rabbit' ?
    16. Which two countries fought the 'Soccer War' ?
    17. In which conflict did the first helicopter assault from the sea take place ?
    18. What did the Butt Report of 1941 prove ?
    19. According to British Army legend, what is 'the most dangerous thing in the world' ?
    20. Where did the multi-national 'Dunsterforce' serve at the end of WW1 ?
    21. Which medal was known to its recipients as the 'Order of the Frozen Meat' ?

Thanks Matt, the book ranges from ancients to moderns so expect a broad field of questions each time.

Looks like Tim is still out in front with Chris on his tail - well done chaps.

    Your area of expertise sir
Dr Pimlott was clearly not a naval historian and, it seems, not too savvy about handgrenades either. Question corrected.
