Thread: AAR on 3D terrain

    Default AAR on 3D terrain

The Wings of Glory terrain boards had a big day out at the Western Suburbs Wargames Association, Altona Meadows, near Melbourne on Saturday 26th November.

The board travelled pretty well, just a small problem with trees on the edge being rubbed off when players were leaning in to the middle. I will reinforce all the trees along the edge with by glueing them back on with a satin acrylic varnish. It'll make them go hard but that should be ok!

I introduced a new player to Wings of Glory Andrew Skurrie "Herr Skurrie" and against my good old friend Paul Ruzika "Von Paul"..

My Phone was flat so I didn't take any pics, but Paul and Andrew took enough to share, thanks guys!

This is a sort of first go at an AAR, I wrote it up quickly on the Sunday but Andrea egged me on to get it right as he wanted to repost it on the Board Game Geek forum. Apologies for the amateurish or naive writing style, its been 35 years since my last essay. I hope you enjoy! Trev.

Larry and Barry, flying their Bristol Fighter unescorted on their suicide photo recon mission way behind German lines to take photos of the river crossings in sector 51. Their escorts from No.4 Squadron were intercepted and never made the rendezvous.
Understanding the full importance of their mission, and too low on fuel to wait any longer, Larry and Barry carried on regardless.

Meanwhile Von Paul and Herr Skurrie (taking the photo) were lurking nearby.

Barry yelled over the loud engine noise of the Bristol Fighter,"Where are those bloody escort Snipes mate?" "Dunno?," said Larry. "Lucky they're not going to a wedding, they'd been paying the organist for double time." "Don't say that mate! It might be our bloody funeral the organist will be playing at." "Keep your eyes open for the Hun, we're in their backyard and the bastards don't play cricket."

The first photo for the boys was quite easy, although Larry had to do a second pass, as the shutter on the camera was about to close, the "Brisfit"was hit by a sudden thermal tossing the plane about and lifting it about a thousand feet in a second, ruining focus of the photo. "Sorry Cobba, we'll have to go around again".

Later as boys lined up for their second target, Von Paul and Herr Skurrie appeared from out of nowhere. Barry yelled over the noise of the engine, "We've got company mate!" Seconds later bullets zipped past Larry's head. Luckily for Larry, Herr Skurrie's aim was a bit out. Barry quickly housed the camera and returned fire with his trusty Lewis Gun. The two Hun were making the photo recon job a hell of a lot more difficult but not impossible.

Larry's excellent flying lined up each target perfectly. Barry's quick reflexes, strength and skill with the camera got the photo's for the "Big Wigs" back home. All the while Larry was throwing the big two seater all over the sky like a nimble fighter. Barry's skill was not just with the camera though, he was also a crack shot with the Lewis gun, every bullet fired had been hand polished personally by Barry the night before! Keeping both Hun at bay and riddling both their Fokkers with holes if they got too close. He was punching holes through their rudders, splitting oil lines and starting small fuel fires! Relentlessly the Hun kept coming back for more. With the last photo taken and as Barry stowed the camera for the last time, as he yelled over the noise, "quick mate, lets get out of here!"

Suddenly, BANG! Herr Skurrie scored a critical hit, damaging the Bristol's engine. Instantly the power dropped and oil started spaying over Larry's googles. Barry swung his Lewis to port at Herr Skurrie's Blue DVII and fired a short burst with his Lewis. Instantly causing the Fokker to start blowing oil smoke. Larry then swung his Lewis to starboard and fired at Von Paul. "Take that", said Barry as flames poured out of the Red DVII. Another short burst and more flames added to the conflagration in the red Fokker. Von Paul seemed doomed to a fiery grave as he turned his plane away from the action! "Whats wrong mate? Did I singe your Kaiser's moustache?" Meanwhile as Larry nursed his battered Bristol Fighter closer to home and the Johnny-come-lately Aussie escort Snipes closing to the rescue, Herr Skurrie was taking aim through thick smoke pouring out of his own very damaged Fokker. He took the shot at the Brisfit. Several lucky rounds pierced the main wingspar and the lower port side wing started to flap about, then fold upwards. Several partially severed struts gave way under the excess strain and the whole wing assembly gave way.
Captain James "Jimbo" McPherson saw the final act as the port side wings of the Bristol Fighter slowly folded upwards and away and the Bristol Fighter plummeted towards the ground. Jimbo said quietly to himself, "Lets get these German bastards". He waved his squadron on and gave chase.

Well done on the AAR Trevor, a visual feast and a great little story to boot.

I love the look of the 3D terrain but I think I'm with Doug personally I prefer the flat maps -just roll out and play.

Thanks Barry! Sadly not, I did draw the explosion card! Hence the description of the demise of the aircraft. I have to say though both the German players now have a deep respect for the Bristol Fighter.
