10 Attack switches to inland airfields and major industrial targets. 1940 by Skafloc

This scenario covers the period 24-28 August inclusive and reflects the many missions flown by the Luftwaffe and against by the RAF.

‘The Meatgrinder’:



The Luftwaffe are now sending over large formations of aircraft covered by larger formations of escorts. The toll on the RAF is staggering. Many squadrons are exhausted but the unequal fight goes on.

Your flight of 3 aircraft (Spitfire/Hurricane Mk1’s) is one of many being scrambled to intercept a large escorted bomber formation.

‘A’ Flight consists of yourself, a competent pilot and a rookie.
You have climbed to the height indicated by control and are heading straight at the formation. Other flights surround you. You give your last radio message “Stick together and don’t get separated.......here they come 12 o’clock level. Tally Ho”.

Setup:


2 mats joined by long edge.
Place your 3 aircraft 1 aircraft base width apart in any formation, Line abreast, Line ahead, inverted V, echelon right (\) or echelon left (/). Your formation is central to the left hand edge. Peg height 4.
Place 2 enemy bombers, (twin engine) and 4 escorts 2x109’s plus 2x110’s on the right hand edge.

110’s Peg height 4 ˝ ruler behind echelon formation and central to bombers.

Notes:


Bombers can only move slow speed due to bomb load.
Fighters have 10 fuel tokens. Once they cross the mid-join in the mats they expend 1 fuel token for every maneuver card and +1 token if they move fast or climb or reverse. Once the fuel tokens have been expended the 109’s will break off and fly back towards the right hand mat edge.After the fuel chits run out if they engage in combat for every card in combat take an A damage chit (keep these in a separate pile. If this pile exceeds total damage then the 109 has run out of fuel and crashes.)

RAF

You must stop the bombers leaving the left edge of the playing area.
Bombers that loose 50% damage will jettison bombs and turn for home.

VP:


Shoot down bomber = total damage points of bomber
Turn bomber back = half damage points of bomber
Shoot down escort = total damage points of bomber
Shoot down all enemy = double VP points
