    Default RAF Project Begins

For a long time the elves have been plotting an RAF base with adjacent Radar site . . . thanks to Albert Ross's thread: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...RAF-bases-1940 they have begun!

First the Radar bits, Model Railroaders will recognize the towers chose to begin the journey with. We opted for less than full scale since the towers would be around 22" tall - and that is bit too tall for our minis to be stable at that altitude . . .

At 8 1/2" tall they are a bit short, but the effect of the design is near spot on - by extending the tops and changing the aerial panels one can make a nice tower at 11 1/2" tall that looks pretty good and makes for a good height if you are flying with telescoping stands . . .

If they turn out to be the Pevensey ones I could see them from where I live ! The concrete bases are still there I believe.

With a little work you could maybe convert one into an airship mooring tower.

In the meantime, in a factory somewhere in Asia a bunch of Stuka Squadron Packs are being produced with the target to bomb it. Some more will provide Bf.109Es for the escort, Spit and Hurricanes to try to stop them...

I'm restless too. It's 5.50 am here, now.
But I really hope we are near to the release.

Tower time! Couldn't find a bashable kit for these, so the elves had to make them from scratch . . .

An evening of bad movies and reality tv, but the elves had a good time . . .

    Now for the panels . . .

    Towers of DOOM finished! Transmitter towers . . . Exciter towers . . .

    A virtual forest for the Spit to fly over/through . . . now for the buildings . . . Stukas . . . Hurricanes . . . Spits to come! Stay tuned! : )

Flight post component! Since we are tall with the towers, we need to get the planes up there, so a dozen or so telescopic posts are in order, thanks to a large order from EBay the posts are in hand . . .

A box of upholstery nails will form the aircraft attitude bearing - make sure they are magnetic!

Surface may need a bit of scratching up with sandpaper to add a bit of friction . . .

A few altitude pegs will need to lose the pin ends, i have a bunch of these broken from falls to my tile floor.

Grasped in a clamp, the peg is drilled through with a bit the size of the nail wire . . .

Nails are trimmed to fit the peg, then glued into the peg . . .

These are great to have extras of . . .

Posts are mounted to bases - more on this later - I find the tall posts need a bit bigger base . . .

Our new pegs in place on the magnet end of the post . . .

    And articulated . . .

    Peg on mini . . .

Peg on post on mini . . .

    Messerschmidt view of Spitfire . . .

And from the front . . . cool banking!

    Side view . . .

    Up and away!

Tower basing time! I chose 2mm clear acrylic to base the towers in sets . . . that way your cool mat shows through . . .

Gluing steel washers to the feet of the towers, positioning rare earth magnets on the bottom of the base with glue dots, allows for the towers to attach and not fall off or over . . .

    Very coolrific!

Placed on the mat, used the paper RAF buildings for a fun dimension . . .

Looking good, really need a big mat! This one is 48" x 72"

Add some Stukas, Hurricanes, Spits and Me-109's!

This will take some time to sort out, but it is going to be fun!

    Fantastic work David!
That will be a super Mat to play a BoB game on with all those 3D bits.

The models are really great, David! Just one thing, I do not think that in real life the radar towers would be positioned so close to an R.A.F. base for safety's sake.

For sure! I just wanted a close proximity so we could do a squadron scramble and an air raid on the towers all on one mat and in the same game day . . . takes sooo long to get from one to the other : ) My goal is chaos and mayhem in a big way, now to add some AA sites and a few Me 110's . . .

What's next? Concrete "acoustic mirrors"? Hangars for the airfield?

The ideas you come up with are unreal. Another great build and plane mounting idea.

Well stated! I might be able to muster a couple of the things on the list - but more time? a very understanding wife?
