Thread: Tripods & Triplanes - An invasion from Mars

    From one who was there...

"....obviously the first wave was challenged by older machines that had mostly been withdrawn from combat by March 1918. These 1917 machines were the ones available at aircraft parks behind the front, and so were the first refitted with the new anti-martian weapons coming from the factories.
Just as humanity was getting its act together, with more modern aircraft, the second wave hit."

They can be fixed. They have to be, as just the sight of the originals I find too painful to bear.

Not just you, David. I originally ordered using my iPhone and the screen told me "Thank you we're currently processing your pledge. ... If your pledge is processed successfully you'll receive a confirmation email."

I waited over two hours and then called MasterCard to make sure they had not blocked it. They had not so I entered again, but logged in from my work laptop. Confirmation was almost immediate.

I'll add more money for extra tokens and damage decks I think.

Just thinkin' I should get Snoopy's Dog house and the Woodstaaken equipped with rockets as well . . . could be a long summer . . . hmmm . . . then there's my Sails of Glory fleet, the Martians could have come in their time zone as well . . . better make a LOT of rockets! ALERT the pyrotechnic elves!!! Wow, all this and I forgot to crack open the beer! Man, am I getting old or what?

I have some secret information from the opposite side of the Martian front.
This is the place where I spent last two working days.

In the fact it is about the European common agricultural policy. But the coincidence worth mention.

Along those same lines, somewhat, Kubajs, when the T&T Kickstarter was getting ready to begin yesterday, I was listening to the radio and learned that the 28th of November was National Red Planet Day here in the U.S.....coincidence? I think not...

Hey Ryan, welcome in from the shadows... congrats on the first post! The choices have, at times, seemed odd... both in terms of the aircraft selected, and the pilots represented (and omitted). In fact, it's happened regularly enough that I don't really question it any more.

Despite this, I'm a fan of the two-seaters in WGF and the dive bombers in WGS... I like the ability to play a variety of missions that go beyond the dogfight. Don't get me wrong... those are fun, too... but I likes me my ground attack and artillery spotting missions.

Good point, Dave. I wonder if the Martians in this version of the assault have more than one Flying machine...? That would certainly complicate matters!

That's the only aircraft model that was too distorted for me to buy. Please Ares, please redesign the Tripe with accurate wings.

This would work on a variety of aircraft... I've seen photos of Nieuports (11/16/17), SPADs (7/13), Sopwith Pups & Camels, Farman HF.20/21, and the B.E.2/B.E.12.

From what I understand, Le Prieur rockets were phased out in 1918 as incendiary bullets were used more widely... I wonder what effect incendiaries would have on Tripods?

At this point, I know of four tripod types. The first two are a scout, Mk I 'Locust' and a heavy, Mk II 'Scarab', coming in the first wave. I also have prototypes for a Mk III and a Mk IV, which now appear to be relegated to a second wave. Each Mk has a different weapon configuration, shielding, and maneuver deck.

The 'waves' could be a delineation to allow for seeing response to the new line, before diving completely in.

PS: There could be more, I'm not necessarily completely in the loop.

Just looking at the Kickstarter page for T&T again, and it struck me that the 'covers' of the periodicals that Ares has used on Facebook to generate interest in the supplement would look great as prints offered in a stretch goal or perhaps as an add-on...I wouldn't mind framing a couple of them for my game room...

I look forward to seeing what's added to the mix as time goes on - looks like it won't be long now until they reach funding. Surely there will be something else for me to spend hard-earned $$$ on...

If one were to attack tripods would you even need the airplanes except as a distraction? If we are to refer to War of the Worlds as canon, in terms of their vulnerability, then dirigibles filled with the common cold virus floating overhead would be targeted by the aliens, and when popped would rain death upon them. Game solved!

  21. #321

    Default

Ah but they didn't know about the virus initially. But also in the book, ground based cannons were effective if only until seen by the Martians.

Ken, I thought your name looked familiar. Good to see you from the Tide of Iron forum on BGG. Small world, and all that. To bad we are on opposite coasts, it looks like we have the same taste in games.

Yea, I was joking around about solving. In fact, I was just reading up on the history of colds and apparently the cause was not identified until the 1950's so weaponizing the virus may have been a challenge in 1918. A bit OT but a cool bit of history: The Cost of the Common Cold

  23. #323

Martian discovered their vulnerability to cold virus around 1903. This is why they cancelled the invasion and delayed it until 1918, when they managed to be immunized to the virus.

AHH...but the flu of 1918???? That could get em.

Wondering if the Mk 3 and 4 walkers are for WWII aircraft...second wave 25 years later?

Agreed. I'm not sure who they're targeting.

The rookie pack add-on and Earth Fights Back pledge level appear to be an attempt to draw in new players, but those aircraft and the RAP (less so) are still -- for the most part -- available from retailers. So... if you wanted in, you could start sooner, support local retailers, and pledge lower. In fact, Ares has said as much in the comments thread.

If they're trying to appeal to current players... well... then these aircraft make even less sense. Especially considering that the game is called Tripods and Triplanes. You want current players to support this KS...? Offer a triplane from the beginning. I get that the N.16 has been impossible to find for years... but Ares has already admitted that the Balloon Busters sets are going to be re-released around the same time (tentatively, I get it) as this KS should be delivered. So there's little advantage to pledging solely for the N.16... though a Navarre kite does have some pull of its own.

The Balloon Busters will not be re-released but only the balloon figurine will, with no airplane as the Nieuport 16 will be used for the Tripods Set.
And there should be another N16 with Ball as a pilot.

I agree that the lack of future 'targets' - add-ons and stretch goals - to fundraise towards is somewhat off-putting. I would think that seeing what could be coming were the program to reach x, y, or z goal might encourage folks to buy in to get there.

Obviously, if it's a stretch goal, then it comes 'free' with the backing; and if it's an add-on then the backer ponies up more $$$ for the item(s). I would suppose that the other two tripods will probably come into the mix as add-ons once the $40K goal is reached??

Perhaps Ares is letting the 'comments' section of the Kickstarter drive some of the extra things at will be offered? Zoe mentioned a Great Ape figure, in the same vein as the Snoopy from the bombers Kickstarter, and someone else mentioned WW2 rules so that aspect of the game can be represented.

This is only the second Kickstarter campaign that I've supported - the Bombers was my first - so I don't really have a sense of how much other campaigns 'front-load' the stretch goals and rewards to entice buy-in from supporters. I've usually looked at things on Kickstarter well after they've begun, and many add-ons and stretch goals are visible by the time I see the product. I do seem to remember the Bombers funding campaign seemed to have more up-front swag than this current campaign currently has...

I am looking forward to seeing what comes next!

    All the best,
    Matt

This. The Giants KS moved so quickly, there was little doubt that stretch goals would be met... it was more a question of how many. With the slower pace (to date) of this KS, I'm much less certain. Don't get me wrong... I've already pledged. But that should come as no surprise... my Hangar is complete and I'd like to keep it so. Additionally, I'm intrigued by the added gameplay and the potential "wow" factor drawing in random passersby at Cons. But I can't help but think a clearer view of "Things to come..." might generate more interest among current players.

Great to make your, long distance' acquaintance. Yes I usually do enjoy a good historical, or sci-fi, based strategy game, i.e. ole' fashion war games.

Ares just posted additional stretch goals for the T&T KS campaign... (taken directly from the "Updates" section of the KS page)

    • The first (Invasion) goal, at $ 40,000 is to have a nice game mat to play Tripods & Triplanes. Double-sided objective tokens with buildings and terrain features are already a part of the Starter Set; a nice playing surface to match them will enhance the game experience. This type of stretch goal, when unlocked, is added, free of charge, to Invasion and The Earth Fights Back; we will ALSO make it available as an add-on (in this case, a $ 5 add-on), for backers at the "Martian" level, and for anybody interested in receiving multiple copies.
    • Next, we asked our designers to create a suitable set of rules to play solo against tripods. We know many of you are interested in solo games, and in fact these rules will also allow co-operative play with multiple Earth pilots fighting against "artificially intelligent" pilots. This goal will be unlocked for all backers, Martian and up, at $ 45,000.
    • Then, another very important boost to the project - at $ 50,000 we will unlock the set of rules and counters to allow Full Compatibility with WW2 Wings of Glory rules and airplane packs. Again, this set will be free of charge to Invasion and The Earth Fights Back backers; and also available as an add-on (at $ 10).

Though I wish there was something a little more concrete for those of us who focus on WW1, it's great to see that a WW2 version is on the horizon!

The post on the BottosCon thread is gone, but when I demo'ed Tripods at that Con, I definitely drew interest from a new crowd. One player was all but dragged away from my table by her friends, who pointedly reminded her she was signed up for another game. This individual was a gamer, and a big H.G. Wells fan. If not for the prior commitment, we would have had a new player right there. If I bring it back next year, she will be at the table, I'm sure.

This is exactly why I jumped on this band wagon. The Zeppelin, HMS Glorious, and now the Tripods, are all things that catch the eyes of passers-by at demos, and attract more players to a great game.

Can't wait to get actual models on the table. Another demo will be put on at my LFGS this Saturday, in celebration of the funding of the Kickstarter. I am trying to organize a demo in Nanaimo, before the Kickstarter closes. 45,000 people in the Comox Valley, 100,000 people in Nanaimo. Too bad I can't afford a trip to Victoria, where there are 300,000 in the Capital Region.

PS: 2.5 Million people in Vancouver. However; BottosCon drew from all over the Northwest of North America. BC and Alberta, Washington State, Oregon, and other places, this year.

Solo rules rules and WWII at 50K and I will be in. Given the news about the next regular series of WGS this will be a welcomed landing for my gaming cash.

I just copied and pasted Christopher's quote about the Stretch Goals into BGG Kickstarter Boardgame Projects

The solo rules will be a big pull on the BGG Solitaire Games on Your Table Guild. The SGOYT thread is reset every month so I will set up a visually stunning scenario this weekend to post and hopefully drum up some interest. I do not have any Tripods to include but I have enough other fluff to get people interested to read the pitch about the KS project.

Has anyone used the tentacle maker from Greenstuff Industries? I wonder how well it works... If Tripods rise from the Pacific I want them to have a bit of thematic flare!

    Chris,
What gives you the idea that Ares kept anything 'secret'? IMHO, I don't believe they even thought of it, until comments on the Kickstarter site brought it up. I'm thinking they were testing the waters with the absolute minimum effort, and are now just attempting to keep up. That being said, I'm not sure that they didn't get most of their truly interested customers on the first day, and the rest of the campaign will be a dribble to the end. That's just me being a pessimist.

I feel strongly that Tripods & Triplanes will put WoG on the radar screen of gamers for whom historical themes aren't intrinsically compelling. In fact, I know that many of those in my local game group actually shy away from historical / realistic wargames as they feel it's "too real" and possibly disrespectful to the lives and sacrifices of actual war veterans to make a game of their service.

So for folks like that, an HG Wells sci-fi setting lets them have the mental / emotional distance from "reality" while still getting to enjoy the "fluff" of things like the Fokker Triplane.

Also, adding the unique and asymmetrical Tripods gameplay to the existing and very easy-to-pick-up WoG mechanics is an insightful move. It will help the game appeal to those looking for a unique and flavorful title with interesting play mechanics.

Overall I think it's a sound move. We'll see how it pans out.

Enjoying this KS but it is moving SOOOO slow...Keep in mind it is only my 5th KS and 3 were Zombicide/Massive Darkness that went into the millions in pledges(I think one broke 4 mill). So dragging to get 10K over a day or so seems slow when 10 K would go by in less then 5 minutes on other KS's.

I do think there is potential here for grabbing lots of new players though. The crossover will also grab new WWI/WWII players down the road

Poor word choice? I never suffer from that problem.

It is too bad that there wasn't some more choice contrived by Ares for this Kickstarter. It will be interesting to see where it goes. They are responding to input on the Kickstarter comments, though.

Looking a historical Kickstarter statistics, it appears that this campaign has already peaked. We are now in the trough, and will only see a spike in the last day(s), if at all.

    Kicktraq.com - Tripods & Triplanes Campaign

This campaign started out with a projected endpoint of $500,000 on the first day. Second day it had dropped to $250,000, as pledge rates plummetted on the second day. It is now around $300,000, but I expect that to drop even more, based on historical stats tracking.

We have the tripods funded, and I am happy about that. We might get the Second Wave produced if the pledges keep coming, but that might not happen without a significant number of pledges. My fingers are crossed...

PS: As a wild guess, I suspect we will only see the Second Wave models appear as a $60,000 or even $80,000 stretch goal. Alternatively, Ares may not publish a production date for the Second Wave until next year, after the initial starter sets are in the mail and in stores.

I think if we get a clear communication about what the WWII stretch goal will actually be or the project hits 50K and they provide the information we could see another bump. From a personal perspective I do not want the WWI airplane(s) and would even accept a Dewoitine to avoid it. I have three figure amount I am willing to lay down but not until I know what I am buying into. To be clear, it is not a deal killer to be required to pledge the $45 with the bi-plane to provide access, but not preferred. I am hoping we can hit that threshold with enough time to get the word out and make an impact. I would seriously be happy with just this and no other stretch goals that support my habit, but they need to supply the info first...

Haha, and from mine I don't have any WWII planes and wished they had more Martian models. I have plenty of planes not and really don't need more of those either. But if I could be a set of Wave 1 and Wave 2 Martians without having to worry about another collectible game I'd be thrilled. But I shy of starting another piecemeal collectible game, even if it is an expansion of what I have.

On the one hand, I think it would be nice to reveal more add-ons and stretch goals sooner, because that might generate additional interest.

However, I can appreciate Ares Games being cautious about promising too much. I backed the Mekton Zero RPG kickstarter in 2013, which promised a new RPG book, miniatures and a lot of bells and whistles such as t-shirts. Four years later? Nothing provided to backers, not even a PDF of the core book. This was very, very disappointing, as I had a lot of respect for the writer's previous games but he appears to have been completely unprepared to handle the logistics of actually delivering product to backers.

So I would much rather Ares stay cautious and provide realistic goals rather than promise the moon too soon and be unable to deliver.

While I fully understand the lack of interest in WWI plans for the WWII players as a avid E-bayer I KNOW how much a unique airframe will sell for on E-bay. I see DH2's selling all the time for $80 USD plus. Any WWI SG unique airframes will be much sought after by collectors ( Ummm..that would be most of us) SO it will be the only way for people missing the KS to get em. Once the WWII crossover hits I expect a jump in pledges.

I hope the WWII version Tripods are scaled to fit the 1/200 of WGS and keep the the original 4 for WGF
I would like to see them look a bit more modern as well - more like the ones in the Classics Illustrated comic or the Jeff Wayne musical.
