Thread: Tripods & Triplanes - An invasion from Mars

Just got my pledge email. I went for a smaller pledge, just the boxed set plus a Squid. I was really tempted by the add-ons for Invasion, but since I already have 2 Red Barons and a Fonck, decided to use the extra cash for some WW2 planes instead.
Still, looking forward to this and hope to use the game to get more locals interested in Wings of Glory!

If you have got Cookies enabled for Ares, you may need to do the same for the Italian Bank processing your card.

Just finished my pledge, whew. 2nd Invasion, an extra Cuttlefish and a couple counter/deck add-ons. Now to build up Earth's defenses to be ready for July!

Gonna hafta wait a few weeks before I pledge out.

Looking like just the one with all the new planes but not the boxed set and reprints. Maybe a spare mk III and IV on top

    Long range Crupp artillery Pete.
    Big Berta ad infinitum.
What is the range of a death ray, and how do they react to mirrors?

Does anyone have actual dimensions of the Tripods that will shipped?

KS gives the heights as 5cm, 7cm, & 10 cm Ken - Zoe actually has a MkI Locust & MkII Scarab (both 7cm), she might be able to give exact measurements if you ask her nicely.

I hope the mirror works as we destroyed all the big artillery pieces in OTT BE Mission 8.

Using the Prototypes, and including the stands: Smallest is 1 7/8" (47mm Mk III 'Squid'), and the tallest is 3 3/8" (86mm Mk IV 'Cuttlefish')

    The others are:

    Mk I 'Locust' is 2 7/8" or 73mm;
Mk II 'Scarab' is 2 5/8" or 67mm.

OK. I have just noticed that there is a mismatch in my prototype set and the Kickstarter. The "Second Wave" models are swapped for marks on the Kickstarter. I have the Mk III as the tall model, and the Mk IV as the short/fast model. Hmmm...

If anyone is interested, you can download a Kindle book of H.G.Wells novels (including 'The War of the Worlds') for free from Amazon.co.uk at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Collected-W...70_&dpSrc=srch

If you do not have a Kindle, there is a link on the same page to download an ap to allow you to read Kindle books on a PC.

Thanks, but sadly only available to UK residents. I did notice, though, that a couple of similar "novel compilations" are available via U.S. Amazon.com for only $0.99, so still a great bargain.

There are a few things that aren't public domain yet in the US, but are pretty much everywhere else in the world, that are keeping the complete works from being free. There are lots of places to download or read the public domain works which include War of the Worlds.

So Mike, I am dialing in some bases for my Intermediate Martians, can you give me the final dimensions and forward orientation? I keep getting strange sizes from the print n play downloads because of different paper size/printer variations. And are the base sizes different for the different Martians like our bomber/fighter sizes? The elves are about to go crazy till August so this may keep them at bay, Thanks!

    Dave,
Try printing one of these, sized correctly for the damage and maneuver cards on the cockpit (~44x68mm).

OldGuy's WoW WWI Consoles - Tripod Mk I

The size of the Martian 'Card' on the cockpit is the same as the bases of the models. All models are the same base size, no matter the "Mark" of tripod.

PS: Check this post for how to use the cockpit: How to handle a Martian - Post #19

    From update 13:

There are, however, a few items in our "to do" list which are behind our intended schedule. They include, essentially, fine-tuning and playtesting all the new rules required by some of the unlocked stretch goals - especially Tripod vs. Tripod rules, bombing, WW2 compatibility.

All these rules sub-systems are shaping up well, but properly playtesting them proved to be very time consuming. It's the mixed blessing of hitting multiple important stretch goals - the game is becoming much better than we could initially imagine, in multiple ways - but also more time-consuming to develop and produce. At the same time, we do not want to send you a product which is half-baked, even if this means a few weeks' delay.

Which is what somebody said somewhere (bgg forum?): the amount of rules additions in the Kickstarter was going to be a fair amount to test and iron out. I would suspect that it will slip past the projected finish time, but it’s one of those things I can live with if required.

When the WWII adaptation popped into the mix, I was concerned. This wasn't even on the radar when the Kickstarter began, and play-testing had been ongoing for at least a year. There were WWI rules they hadn't sorted out yet (Altitude and bombing for two), either.

Add into all this the Tripod on Tripod thing (should have seen this coming, I suppose), and there is a lot of things to cover before the rules can be published.

This might take longer than June of this year. Ares may need to do separate releases of Stretch Goals, if that can be done.

I would expect they wouldn’t opt for that. Bringing out T&T with the stretch rules - Pod vs.Pod combat and WWII enabled - is something they want to have noted on the packaging itself, which pretty much means it all needs to be there from the word go (I’m thinking beyond just the Kickstarter to the general public release). Delay rather than piecemeal.

IMHO, the WWII stuff won't be included on the packaging for the retail release. Tripods & "Triplanes"? So, only a stretch goal for the Kickstarter, and therefore it could be delayed. However, there are a few things that need testing, besides the WWII rules. I don't want to wait, but I'm thinking June 2018 will be a strain on Ares.

...and update 14 notes it is more of a strain on the airplane manufacturing, which is behind schedule, so it appears they have extra time for playtest and polish regardless. Sigh.

I ummed and arred quite a bit before taking the plunge ion this, but a delivery date of June plus some of the aircraft won me over.
Now I see there is a delay not due to Martians, but the prototypes for the aircraft to go with, decals or some such, not that they had much practice over the past few years getting aircraft released painted and decalled.. yes that is sarcasm.
Not overly impressed on hearing the latest update as reading the production of the airplanes not even started yet, give me strength, qs this means and I quote “an estimated ex-works date around the end of July at best.”
Am now an unhappy teddy bear

Whilst not living on a different planet this came as no surprise to me, but I do wonder what planet the Manufacturers live on. Send the Aeroplanes. I'll stick the decals on myself. (Not myself).

Here is the actual message from Roberto.

    Production Update

    Posted by Ares Games (Creator)
    People of the Earth,
here is my monthly update about what's going on production-wise.
We got an unexpected delay in the part of the project we had more confidence about - the airplanes accompanying our Tripods.
As you remember from my previous update, I was expecting to have the pre-painted samples of the airplanes accompanying the tripods (both in the Starter Set and as project add-ons) approved by April, 30th.
However, that has not happened. At the moment, we're still waiting for the factory to send us the airplane samples (they reported issues with the decal manufacturing). So, while the mass production of the Tripods themselves is now completed, the production of the airplanes has not even started.
This is quite a setback on our planned schedule, as we now have a best-case scenario of approving airplane samples by the end of May. Mass-production normally requires 6 to 8 weeks, and this means an estimated ex-works date around the end of July at best.
On a positive note (and doing our best to "turn poison into medicine" for both Ares and the backers) we are making use of this extra time to improve even further the graphic design, and overall "polishing" all the rules content, as well as moving forward with additional playtesting. (That would be nice)
I will keep you updated on the next steps. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and continuous support.
    Yours,
    Roberto/Ares

Delays are, from my limited experience, one of the most common aspects of backing a Kickstarter Campaign. This and finding it less expensive from on on-line retailers after campaign fulfillment seem to the be most common. Less common is not providing what or everything that was promised, such as stretch goals.

Having worked designing and producing computer games, where optimistic deadlines were the norm, I am not one to go into angsty tirades against Kickstarters. This is a production glitch, nothing more, and while a minor disappointment, that’s the extent of it for me. If it means everything else has the time it needs rather than be rushed, it’s a blessing in disguise.

I was not too worried about a few delays.

I had thought that September wouldn't be too unrealistic. September will be M-Con 2018 in Nanaimo at which I was hoping to showcase 3&3, and be able to send players to a shop where they could buy their own copy.

November might allow me to do BottosCon in Vancouver. Hard to plan, with such flexible production dates. But, what did I expect. Reality check.

Done 5 or so kickstarters now, Almost every one has been behind schedule a few months. Enough to annoy me but not a deal breaker. The Stretch goals more then make up for the annoyance in delays. Also expect as the China trade thing heats up and they continue to have their economy melt down we will see more and longer delays. Also expect to see their prices rise forcing companies to go elsewhere (I heard India is gearing up). Worth the wait for me as my local hobby store is not the most attentive about getting full line. Matter of fact they pushed the newest edition of FoW just long enough to get me interested again before dropping it like a hot rock. Concerning KS, rather have em take an extra month to get it right then drop a half finished product right on schedule. Also on this one everything for the most part is non exclusive so we all have to wait.

Yes, these kinds of unforeseen delays are common with Kickstarters. If you have no patience then I would avoid them altogether. But I've been fortunate in that every KS I've funded has come through with everything that was promised. If you're really into the gaming hobby, you should have more than enough material in your backlog to be able not to be overly irritated by production delays. It's not like I would start playing with these items the day they arrive in any event.

Been in on 3 Zombicide campaigns now. The exclusives are worth the wait (and it is one of the few games My wife enjoys playing with me). I found I can get 2 sets with all the KS stretch goals and E-bay the second making up for the costs including shipping and E-bay bite. Buy 2, keep one, and make a profit off selling the second one. Did that with Black Plague. Got 3 Sets, one is ours, one I sold the exclusives off of that almost covered costs leaving me with the 2 box sets to paint and sell someday when I get time and a few more character boxes. Third KS set is still sitting in a box to be sold someday (price is around $800 last I looked) to cover more KS costs. Had some extras ordered from Zombicide Green Hordes but it still has not been delivered and the next version just finished a few weeks back on KS. Waiting to see where I am at in a few weeks before commiting more to it.

The T and T campaign was sort of new for me as it had no real KS exclusives to buy for resale. Hence I got my set and that was it. Still can not wait though.

Thats a tough question. I'm sure my T&T KS pledge will be all I need. How many that didn't pledge will want in after playing or seeing it? Tough call.

I can do my own, but i'm sure your engraved ones will be better.

    “Real Soon Now.”

The physical production run was estimated (emphasis on “in theory”) to be finished one week ago today. There has been no announcement of production being finished and them moving on to packing and mailing yet. So...I am leaving gentle reminders for them on the Kickstarter page (my Strother Martin Cameo will be next after my Jessica Chastain Zero Dark Thirty parody) to keep us informed. I rather suspect it is a case of them holding off announcing anything until they have something specific to announce, which seems to be their pattern. So....Real Soon Now. Realistically, not available until January, if you are in the Kickstarter and lucky enough to be close to their point of shipping, maybe before Christmas. Maybe.

Want it for Christmas but not holding my breath. I sort of blame China for this one. I also suspect either the next wave of WWI aircraft being released, or the rules tweaks to fit the exclusives from the KS slowed things down.
