Default Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum, Nowra NSW

On my recent trip down to Canberra for Wintercon I diverted to the town of Nowra on the southern coast of New South Wales. It's a beautiful part of the world.

The naval air base HMAS Albatros is home to the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum. As you drive into Nowra the Huey lets you know it's a navy town.

A couple of examples of one of my favourite fast jets - the A4 Skyhawk. The two seat trainer saw service with the RAN and the RNZAF whilst the single seat version was donated to the museum by the US Department of Defence and finished in FAA colours.

Then on to the rotary wing aircraft. With the decommissioning of the last RAN carrier HMAS Melbourne in the 1980's the FAA lost it's fixed wing capability.

Some fantastic aircraft in a small space, I was glad to have had the time to stop by and take it in for a couple of hours.

    Great Museum.

Looks like a place that conserves the achievments of brave men and their machines.

Thank you, for taking us to this tour, Carl.

The Fairey Gannet is that ugly...

But I'm afraid the German Bundesmarine used it, too.
    Voilà le soleil d'Austerlitz!

Great shots Carl! Loved to see everything, but mainly the A-4 Skyhawk (Brazil still uses these in its Naval Air Force (Força Aeronaval) unfortunately i guess.... They are too old already) and the MiG-15UTI trainer. Love this plane!!! Saw one in an aviation museum nearby. REP for you!!

    Thumbs up

Fantastic collection of Photos Carl! Rep incoming.

I have been fortunate enough to have had two visits to the Museum as part of a WW1 Historical Society tour with a FAA guide & we were invited into the Curators area to view the Robert Little's gear before some was put on display. Pics attached.

Great pics Carl. Thanks for posting.
As for the Gannet, I made a solid balsa wood 1/72nd scale model of it many, many years ago. I never thought it ugly, only impressive.

Definitely not the prettiest aircraft out there but it was tough and did the job for more than a decade.

The Royal Navy also used a version of the Fairey Gannet as an airborne early warning plane.

I remember when we had HMAS Melbourne in service. Trackers and Sky Hawks. Not like those imitation carriers they have now.
