Amazing quality 1919 aerial movie of the lines. A very moving bit where the pilots daughter gets to see him smile for the first time ever (he was shot as a member of the Resistance when she was just a tiny baby) - "he always looks so severe in old photographs"

    Dave,
Thanks for finding this...really shows the devastation from constant shelling. I wonder what he was flying in when these clips were shot?

Please let us know what you think of the BBC show. We might get it over on this side in due course.

A very moving piece mate! Thanks for Sharing. I do miss getting BBC America on cable.
Of course it's always better to get the Real deal.

The actual documentary was far more detailed than just the arial footage. That was in itself phenominal, but the still photographs and the overview of what the areas are like now added an extra dimension which was very moving, especially when linked to the interview with the pilots daughter.

I think last summer the BBC blew a huge chunk of my licence fee on putting Ferg in the Biff, ObiWan Kenobi in the Grace Spit, two fellahs in the SE and Junkers...

When's it going to be MY turn???!

Well worth the watch - get on over to iPlayer.

Seeing Ypres ( or Ieper as we write it) devastated like this ...it was shocking mere by the fact that these were "moving pictures" instead of the pictures and postcards of the period that are in my possession.
It truly shows that it must have been hell to be at the Western front ( or any front for that matter )
Thanks for sharing..pity I've missed it on TV.

Was speechless there for a bit... and that says a lot for me. Thanks for sharing that, would love to see the entire documentary!
