Thread: Air superiority?

  1. #1

    Default Air superiority?

Just completed the third sortie of mission 4 (bombing) and the allies manged to clobber two targets, damage a third as well as taking out an MG position by strafing and an AA gun. At the end of the sortie all the German fighters had returned to base or crashed trying to while the allies still had three operational aircraft over enemy territory. Obviously an allied victory, but do they gain an extra points for driving the Germans from the skies?

    Headquarters, Verdun Sector, July 1917

Making a final effort to knock out the enemy's supply and ammunition depots before the 1917 Big Push, the British and French once again combined forces to launch a combined attack. The British fielded two DH4 Bombers and the French a pair of Caudron G4's. Close escort was provided by the maneuverable SPAD 7's, and France unleashed it's secret weapon that had been delivered in May, the powerful, fast and well armed SPAD 13. As expected we were met by swarms of Fokker triplanes which raced to intercept our boys as soon as they crossed the trenches, but first blood went to one of the new SPAD's which took down one triplane and badly damaged another.

The British DH4's meanwhile had also pressed home their attacks, driving off a red painted Fokker with defensive gunnery, heavily damaging one enemy depot with bombs and destroying an AA gun. The Germans fought back fiercely and shot down the last Caudron but a second triplane, it's pilot intent on a certain close range kill, collided with a DH4. The British bomber went down in flames and the Fokker, on fire itself, headed for home but crashed on landing - some eye witnesses on the ground reported a huge fireball over the runway and it is doubtful the pilot survived. Suddenly, the sky was completely clear of German planes - it is obvious that our attacks on their supply points recently is beginning to starve them of fuel and ammunition! Unchallenged now, our aircraft took out the remaining ground targets using machine guns and two and 25lb Cooper bombs

With Pete and Peter I agree about Caudrons. It's not a plane you see often .
