    Default Ship standards?

    Hi everyone,

I just picked up WGF a couple weeks ago to play with my daughter, and noticed there were several ships available for the game. I have a few 3D models I've built over the years that I can render from a top-down view, but I wanted to check if there were any 'standards'?
Should the ship be by itself, or have a water background?
Should I add a 'footer' with various statistics, like the airplane cards? If so, how would I come up with the statistics?
Should I add a red dot over each AA gun?
.pdf format, or .bmp / .jpg?

Unfortunately, most my models are suitable for WGVietnam but I do have one WWII and one generic old freighter that would be more generally useful.

Here's a quick test of my WWII boat (LCT Mk 6):

    Hmmm...

Lots of questions, answered with: depends.

To which available ships are you referring?

I have a water mat, for ship and English Channel games. So, if the 3D model is going to sit on that, no water needed. As a card, I'd want a water background.

For a big ship, I'd do up a management sheet, or card. Neil [Skafloc] is the source I'd consider as a reliable source for all things ships on the Forum. He'd be able to give you an idea of how to figure out stats.

Red dots could be added, but if the guns are clear enough, you might be able to skip them. If your usual gaming group absolutely needs the dots to allow guns, put on dots. My 3D model (1/200 HMS Glorious aircraft carrier, by Dave [clipper1801]) has gun emplacements, and I measure from them. No dots.

Format is your choice, as it determines whether you share it, and at what level of detail. IIRC, .pdf would work for posting to the file section.

Not a bunch of answers, and more questions for you. But, it will get you closer to your gaming solution, I hope.

    Thanks!
I'm intending to share (probably 1/144 and 1/200 versions); hence the questions. My gaming group consists of my daughter and I, so we're pretty flexible. But, I figured it'd be easier to ask first - might as well make them so others can use them.

1/144 & 1/200 ships depending on type take up a lot of room. For example a Yorktown class carrier WW2 would be in excess of 4 feet long. A Japanese destroyer around 2 feet long. A Zeppelin in 1/144 is around 4 feet long. I use 1/1200 scale ships, 1/700 & 1/200 depending on what I'm playing. Others use 1/1800 from Allies And Axis game too.

So what scale ships do you have?

Being flat models, I would imagine they could be printed at any scale - and resizing them on my end is no big deal. The only possible exception would be if I added the ship data to the end of the card, as you wouldn't want to scale that too low.
The above boat just barely fits on a 8.5 / 11 sheet of paper at 1/144. The little freighter I have is 20-30% larger.

Apologies. Thought you had some 3d models. Have a look in the file section there are loads of ships to choose from. Including a nice 1/200 Ryujo aěrcraft carrier.

For 1/1200 scale I use 3d with a top down flat card substitute when being overflown. Each has arc info on its respective base.

No, my fault - my initial post was unclear. The models I have are 3D computer models intended for video games. I can render them from the top to make flat cutouts for WGx, but I wanted to know what else I should do to the images before I upload them.

I've looked at the downloadable models (including the impressive 1/200 carrier), but different authors appear to have done different things. There's a series of 'target' cards with information similar to aircraft. There's the example in your ship rules which seems to be a bit more complex, and finally, there are ships that have no information at all.
I was just looking for guidance in the face of conflicting information.

I've been eying that ship and wanting a 1/200 of it for some time...
A quick Wiki search would give it's length.
I would be happy to scale it for you if you don't want to mess with it.

Nice catch on that LCT Mk 6 Pencil

    OK,
Here's a 1/144 and a 1/200 version of the LCT. In the style of the 1/200 carrier, I'm going to leave off any other information?
I'll do another version, maybe 1/700, and see if I can combine the target cards with Skafloc's examples in his rules? May take me a couple of days to figure out the data....

    It is, isn't it?

Now, some of those in 1/700 scale, to place under my 1/700 assault craft..................

OK, here's a 1/700 model attached to a mission / target card. I used Skafloc's rules for the cannon data. What should I use for the hit points? Skafloc's rules would give 3 HP (tonnage / 100), but that seems low looking at some of the other target cards. There's a LCM with 9 HP, for example.

There is no 'standard' for targets, it's what you feel comfortable with. Personally I prefer 3d models, and I have one of these LCT6's in a 1/400 scale kit by Heller, so I really appreciate the card!

Apart from the practicality of large models taking up space, there is also the perspective view when the ships the same scale as the attacking aircraft -it looks as though you are dropping bombs on them from below masthead height!

I use Axis and Allies War at Sea minis as WGS naval targets. They not only look nice in 3D, but are challenging to hit so to say as well. If you use a 1:200 scale model, then it is really no way to miss them.

I have those too and hope to do a Midway scenario with them soon. Trouble is they only made a couple of merchantmen and those are both rare and expensive so I ended up knocking together a few generic ships from balsa and plastic sheet. Not to any particular scale or even very good, but I do prefer them over 2d paper targets http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...-Naval-targets
