Default What's on your workbench: July 2016 edition

Here are three Fokker EV/DVIIIs I finished last week - they've been in a partial state for a while now but I finally got back to them after Origins. My FLGS had a bunch of them, and I thought I'd do my bit to support them by buying a couple of extras. One of my 'grand projects' is to do a series of planes from Jasta Boelcke, and I thought some late-war 'what-ifs' would be fun. I patterned the markings on the DVIIs illustrated in the Osprey Jasta Boelcke book, with the Staffelfuehrer's yellow and black banded plane, and then two of the unknown pilots' planes. I made the cowlings all white, and the tails appear in the Jasta half black/half white scheme. I added Bolle's leader's stripes to the top of his plane's wing (he evidently had them on his DVII's wing)...

I also repainted the top and bottom of the wing and its edge to get rid of the black edge to the wing. All in all, these were fun little planes to paint. Now I just have to get them up into the air and see if I can vanquish some the the Kaiser's enemies...

    As always, thanks for looking!

Default And now for something a little different...

I've had a copy of X-Wing sitting unplayed for quite a while now, and my older son and I have been meaning to get around to trying it out. This past weekend we did just that, and after we'd played a couple of games, I quickly decided that I needed some 'cockpits'/control consoles to keep the cards and abilities and special maneuver plans and counters organized while we played. So off to the FLGS to pick up some basswood (which ended up as the base of the consoles) and balsa. The consoles are 3" by 6"...

Here are the four stacked on top of one another to display the emblems on their fronts - from bottom to top we have the Rebel Alliance, The Empire (actually the front-on cockpit view of the TIE fighter), a Scum and Villany console, and then on top a star field console.

and here is a view of the Imperial console loaded with Darth Vader's cards and counters. In addition to the TIE cockpit on the front, I painted a stylized pattern of the TIE's 'wings' onthe sides of the console - it seemed the right thing to do...

These little beasties help keep things organized for us, and as you may know from other posts I've made on the Forum, I really do love extra bits and bobs to add to the game...

    As always, thanks for looking!

Great work Matt, I especially like your cockpits. I have been toying around with the idea of making some similar wooden ones for wings, but its July and I am out trimming my bushes instead of having fun. I need to get my priorities straight!

That's some deep dish Italian goodness there, Ian! I have always loved the Semovente - a quirky little assault gun!

Had to create the rules with my brother so the game replicates the cartoon. Tankquando! The rules are now spot on after a year of tinkering. I don't know any other game that has tankrobatic manoeuvres. We can now try our tankette rules. Don't know how it'll go through, tankette can't damage anything! The game is great fun and as unrealistic as the cartoon. I hope to test them next weekend.

the Fairey Battles are now gimballed up and complete.
The Defiants are just waiting for me to make the wing masks to complete the camouflage paint, then its on to details, decals and gimbal mounts!
The Blenheims are out of basic paint and just into assembly
The Short bombers have the CDL and are progressing nicely.
Out of shot are the little ships for the Brave Chaps of the RNAS to protect in October

I gave my new Anzio team a game at the weekend. My piloting experience served me proud, attack from above, even if in a Semoventi. It worked well and I could just hold Pravda off long enough, to race to the top floor of the multi-storey car park and pick off their flag tank to win.

    It was great fun.

On my virtual workbench I've been working on a Shapeways L.V.G. C.II (or two), which is something Zoe requested a long time ago. Two things surprised me: it saw pretty widespread use (especially in 1916), with over 700 produced. Also it had unusual "kinked" ailerons, with the inner half at a much more downward angle of attack than the outer half. While you see washout fairly frequently on German ailerons, I don't think I've seen a "split aileron" like that before. I also finished a Rumpler G.III and started on a Bristol Fighter. The latter I'm stuck on because there's some pretty strong disparities in the tail shape from one reference to another. And the color-reference project motors on.

So there are no sails in this project, nor wings, but it is 1/144" scale . . . .

This has been accumulating dust in the den and since I am still banned from the workshop, no one said anything about the kitchen table . . . sorry no construction photos . . .

At 183 parts it took me a few days including painting and detailing . . . lots of finger exercise - the therapy part!

Lots of added details like the special colors on the light panels . . .

More that a few hours on the NASA web sites!

Now to find a place to hang it!

How about a maneuver card set Mike?

    Any new altitude rule ideas?

Wow, Dave, that's huge! What an impressive model! Seeing it next to a Zeppelin is great for a sense of size...

    Dave,
Amazing work. A maneuver deck would be a bit restricted, no? Three straights might do?

A playing card would need tabloid format for size, I'd think.

    Post a good top-down image, and I'll attempt a Post-War version?

Just kidding Mike, I wanted to get back to doing some modeling, not the same as jigsaw puzzles. I had access to a model knife, two paint brushes and five colors of paint, a tube of glue and a tub of gift wrapping paper, I really miss my elves and my workshop. Bone mass replacement therapy is not a fun friend, they tell me only 22 months more, I know I cannot go that long without modeling, so I convinced them it could be good therapy . . . So far so good, so I ordered 28 Shapeways models . . . Now if I can just get the elves to wear white coats . . .

    Exactly.

The International Space Station travels in orbit around Earth at a speed of roughly 17,100 miles per hour (that's about 5 miles per second!). This means that the Space Station orbits Earth (and sees a sunrise) once every 92 minutes!
    Wikipedia - International Space Station

So, arrow length on a card for each phase would be 16 kilometers for WGF.
