    Invasion of Malaya 1941/1942

The Japanese advance down the Malaysian peninsular was moving quickly, but not without loss. The RAF had a few operating airstrips sending out ground attack missions harassing the Japanese forces whenever they could.

“Seems like our brothers in the Army can’t protect their own ground troops so we have been asked to help. We’ll be hunting anything in the air or on the ground near the RAF base at Machang. Our ground forces are getting near the base so be sure of any ground targets before attacking.”
“If you see any of our friends flying Army planes in the area try not to antagonize them. They are having a difficult time right now”, Nobu smirked and the listening pilots chuckled.
Squadron leader Nobu Tanaka pointed at Takashiro Suzuki, Hiroshi Matsui and Shigeo Nakasumo, “You will come with me. Toma, take the others”.

Nobu wanted to keep an eye on Hiroshi. Toma Seiko gave a good accounting of him on his last mission. A rookie with promise is a valuable asset to the squadron and must be nurtured, not wasted.
Suzuki(white Zero) would have Hiroshi on his wing .(green Zero)

Nobu (camo Zero) would have another rookie, Shigeo, on his wing. (green Zero, white border on Sun)
As flight leader he would take the most aggressive path. Shigeo was instructed to keep close and protect Nobu’s tail.

Flying over the Malaysian jungles on the approach to Machang, Nobu spotted specks in the air ahead.
“Eyes open boys, make sure they are not Army before you start shooting”.
“RAF Hurricanes! Fire as you can”.

Nobu engaged two Hurricanes. He was surprised at the accuracy of their fire as he shot his cannon into the engine of the enemy marked ‘H’.

Cutting over the plane he just wounded Nobu fires into the ‘G’ enemy at close range and watches it fall apart.
“Great shot Flight Leader”! cried Shigeo.
“Quite, concentrate and follow orders”, returned Nobu. Nobu worried that Shigeo’s
    enthusiasm would distract him.
Shigeo keeps close and the “H’ enemy passes under.

The highly maneuverable biplane keeps it’s aim and peppers Nobu’s Zero again.
Hiroshi sees Nobu in trouble. Instinct takes over and he leaves Suzuki and turns in to punish the biplanes for their actions against the squadron leader.
Speaking as fast as he can, “Leader Suzuki Sir I have to protect Flight Leader he is being shot by the enemy I have to try”!
Hiroshi damages the Gladiator tailing Nobu.

Now ranking as flight leader with Nobu down, Suzuki calls out to the two rookies to break off and head home.
Shigeo cries out, “I’m on fire and can’t get it out”!
Suzuki, “You are high enough, try a power dive, that may help”.

Shigeo dives from 3000’ to well under 1000’ but the fire continues. He is now too low to use his parachute and looks for a clearing to bring his plane down into.
The burning Zero crashes through the canopy and somehow finds its way to the ground in one piece. Shigeo is stunned by the violence of the crash and manages to get out of his burning plane, collapsing meters away.
He comes to for a moment as he is being lifted into a truck, but those helping him are not speaking Japanese.
When the truck stops at it’s destination an hour later a medic checks in on the Japanese pilot. No pulse.

Nice AAR and terrain. No Dennies to the best of my knowledge there were no Gladiators in Malaya (some one correct me if I am wrong) but the RAAF did have several squadrons of Bufferlows (in fact they were all the fighters we had at the time.

I don't have any Buffalos finished yet so I threw in a pair of Gladiators to make it interesting.

There may not have been Glads, but they did have some Bi-planes. I know they had Buffalos & Blonheims specfically, but a few stragglers as well.

    Torpedo bombers[edit]
On 1 October 1928, No 36 Squadron was reformed by redesignating the Coast Defence Torpedo Flight, based at Donibristle in Scotland and flying Hawker Horsleys.[1] It was sent to Singapore to strengthen its defences against naval attack, with its aircraft reaching its destination on 17 December 1930.[6] As well as practicing torpedo attacks and working with the Royal Navy, 36 Squadron was deployed to Rangoon in response to a rebellion in Burma, carrying out bombing raids against the insurgents.[7][8] The squadron was re-equipped with Vickers Vildebeests in July 1935, continuing as a torpedo bomber squadron operating from Singapore.[1]

Vickers Vildebeest Mk III of No. 36 Squadron in flight over Singapore. 22 September 1936
    Second World War[edit]
36 Squadron, along with No. 100 Squadron RAF retained the obsolete biplanes when Japan invaded Malaya, and flew an unsuccessful attack against the Japanese cruiser Sendai during the Battle of Kota Bharu on 8 December 1941.[9] It continued operating against the Japanese, its Vildebeests being supplemented by five ex-Fleet Air Arm Fairey Albacores.[10] Where possible it operated by night, bombing Japanese-held airfields and troops.[11]
On 26 January 1942, Japanese forces landed at Endau, on the east coast of Malaya, 150 miles from Singapore. To oppose this landing, nine Vildebeests of No 100 Squadron and three of 36 Squadron, together with nine Australian Lockheed Hudsons, set off at 1:00 pm (having flown against land targets the night before), and despite a fighter escort five Vildebeests were shot down. No 36 and 100 Squadrons repeated the attack two hours later with nine Vildebeests (with two from 100 Squadron[12]) and three Albacores. This time the fighter escort was late, only finding the bomber force once it had been engaged by Japanese Nakajima Ki-27 fighters, with a further five Vildebeests and two Albacores shot down, and a further two more damaged so badly that they were written off.[13][14][15][16] These losses—which included the commanding officers of both Squadrons—could not be sustained, and the remnants of the two squadrons were evacuated to Java on 31 January, being merged into a single unit. On 28 February, nine Videbeests attacked a Japanese convoy off Rembang in Northern Java, claiming eight ships sunk but losing another commanding officer. It ceased to exist on 7 March 1942 after its last two Vildebeests ditched off Sumatra while attempting to evacuate to Ceylon.[1][13][17][18]

Chinese Nationalists used Gladiators but all of my sources indicate no Gladiators in the Far East command, although they were offered 26, they turned the offer down. Hurricanes were delivered but later on and too little too late.

Of course. I'm sure most scenarios are written with planes that have been released and are available. It's always fun to be able to throw in an AIM or Shapeways for something a bit more realistic.
