Default Official Mitsubish A5M Claude Painting Thread

1/200 A5M4 from Armaments in Miniature, LLC. Decals from Miscellaneous Miniatures, LLC. Vallejo Model Colors gray green (overall), red tail section, and German gray cowling. Heavy wash followed application of decals. It's a four-piece model - airplane, two landing gears, and a fuel tank. Marked as an aircraft of Suzuka Kokutai. I also ginned up some decals for the Oita and Sasebo Kokutais.

The AIM one looks better - but this shows what 5(!) thinned coats of PVA (Elmers White Glue) will do to smooth out the roughness on WSF. Followed by spray enamel chrome, then acryllic red, black, thinned blue on cockpit glass, raw sienna on cockpit, then decals, then spray gloss varnish.

To see how good the other models in this thread are, and how small the serial numbers on the tail...

I usually use only 3 coats of dilute PVA. But spray chrome requires a glass smooth finish to get the natural metal effect.

My first A5M Claude from 12th Kokutai, China, 1938.

Had to hand paint the fuselage stripe and cobble together the tail numbers as there are no decals for this guy. The hinomaru are from Miscminis. I have two more of these in deck, and cards to follow. A fun plane to paint.

A better picture. For some reason, my iPad doesn’t want to take a clear picture of this one.

Wow Dak21 that looks great. Thanks for including a resource for the paint scheme. I think I will try to start including that information as well.

    More great planes Dave!

Yes, a good idea. I'll try to do the same when possible.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback. The planes actually look quite a bit better in person. I’m a rather poor photographer.

Here is the card for the 12th Kokutai A5M4. Not very different from the other. Added fuselage stripes and colored landing gear fairings.
