A little over 590' 4"oa, one of the shortest carriers in the IJHN fleet.
Approximately 2' 9.5" oa. at 1/200 scale. That is doable.

I was having trouble with the deck configuration, so I decided on the front 3rd metallic and back 2/3rds wood:

Thank you for the pictures and vindicating support for the most modern deck scheme (I believe most modern).
I am exhausted so I only popped the landing/take off graphic tonight but can't wait to get this one done and use it... Woo

1/700 Ryujo, one of my five Japanese carriers in that scale.

Only 3 US carriers built (so far), but then they are bigger!

Spent all last night trying to get those quad 13.2 mm Hotchkiss machine guns to look right...
This is what I came up with:

They should not be quad Hotchkiss - Ryujo carried 25mm AA in single, twin and triple mounts - no 13.2mm mgs.

4 singles, at flight deck level right at the stern; 4 triples, in sponsons slightly lower, just forward of the singles; 4 twins, two amidships (one either side) and two up forward, one each side.

seen here; the 4 aft singles, the 4 not-so-aft triples, and the 2 midships twins. The other 2 (forward) twins are visible on my other Ryujo photo.

I have to admit I do not know in the least what was on Ryujo
In fact I am having to rely on Google and Wiki searches (It was my best shot LOL).
The links below are claiming several armament versions (evidently it went through several retro fits).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japane...y%C5%ABj%C5%8D

    http://forum.worldofwarships.eu/inde...carrier-ryujo/

    http://ww2db.com/ship_spec.php?ship_id=25

    http://combinedfleet.com/ships/ryujo

Check out these links and tell me what you think.

I like the latest versions of these ships, but I'm also able to produce the image with any armament compliment.

Lets hash it out, and I will go with whatever you guys want

The image I was using for the quad AA was actually 25mm not 13mm (woops).

    I'm leaning toward:

    4 x dual 127 mm dual-purpose gun (8 guns total),
    2 x dual 25 mm anti-aircraft guns (4 guns total) center ship,
    6 x triple 25 mm anti-aircraft guns (12 guns total) 2 fore and 4 aft ship.

In any case, I had it wrong

Please let me know what you all want to see on the image.

Flying Helmut, I have your vote.

I am getting the impression I may have to make at least 3 armament versions (with pleasure that is )

    Thank you Flying Helmut,
    Chris

I was definitely confusing the 25s and 13s.
Good call on pulling out the quads Tim...
I updated the MGs to trips and also changed the them to be more 25mm-ish
Nice catch sir... Very nice catch...

Ryujo was indeed rebuilt twice, owing to the severe instability problems caused by attempting to fit too much onto too small a hull - the Washington Treaty allowed for carriers of 10,000 tons or less to be excluded from the national tonnage quota.

The armament configuration of my model was that carried when she was sunk, in 1942. Certainly, earlier weapons fit configurations existed.

    That makes sense,,,

when she was sunk, in 1942
That is the configuration I would prefer at this point; the latest...

Back to the drawing board as they say...

Thank you again sir, and please point out anything else that you notice

    Tim,

Thank you for helping me with the armament configuration on the Ryujo.

Just to give you an idea of how far off base I was, I didn’t even catch the fact that those 4 protrusions at the back 3rd of the flight deck were gun implements (single 25s in this case).

I'm admittedly not familiar with Japanese naval armaments (getting there hopefully; I want to make a Japanese destroyer and submarine graphic also).

Without you setting me straight, a great deal of work would have been invested to produce an embarrassing result. I may have gotten the 25s (mid ship) correct, but no guarantees on that one either.

After reviewing the correct configuration that you shared, it almost seems like the weight was pulled mid ship or aft for stability?

I had wondered why armament did not remain on the bow (what appeared as wasted space for the anchor lines); but, I think I can appreciate how the less weigh forward would reduce the risk of Ryujo’s bow digging in at high speeds?

Thank you again for the historical details Tim (seriously thank you)

    Hi Chris

    You're most welcome!

Now for something less welcome; I can't find any corroboration for the armament layout on my kit!

Specifically, the four single 25mm guns placed at the after end of the flight deck.

As the war progressed, and the need for additional AA guns became clear, the IJN added single 25mm guns wherever they could be fitted, and would possess a good field of fire, but this policy was implemented from late 1943 onwards.
Checking across my other ship models, built and unbuilt, and the plans and books I have accumulated over the years, I cannot find any other single 25mm AA mounts on warships pre-1943!

I am reluctantly forced to accept that the construction kit is wrong (it's not a unique situation, unfortunately!) and the correct 1942 AA armament scheme should be that as stated in your sources (and in mine!) - 6 triple mounts (two forward, and four aft) and two twin mounts (amidships) and NO SINGLES!

I hope it is not too late to incorporate this information in your superb deck plan.

    Apologies for leading you astray!

    Tim

    No apology needed good sir...

How far off base would we be if we if we tossed the singles in there/if it were up to you, would you throw the singles in or exclude them?

Oh, and don't fret the additional work aspect, I needed the twin 25s for mid ship anyway... It really couldn't have worked out any better sir...

What would be in those 4 aft wells; or, would that be for flight deck personal/operations. What would be your best guess..?

Thank you for the excellent input sir...
    Chris

Here's where I have so far, I spent the day working on the forward mast in upright position and creating the twin mounts for mid ship.

I think we would be far enough off base to warrant a rethink - my vote would be to scrap the singles altogether, and go with the 2 x 2, 6 x 3 layout.

At least two of those 4 wells aft would probably hold landing lights, akin to small searchlights. Possibly all four might contain these; the others:- if not searchlights/landing lights, then perhaps other deck landing aids such as signal lamps or some type of crosswind measure device or somesuch!

I'm just really glad you started at the bow, and not the stern!

Picture the (WOG) aircraft compliment we can dump on her now:

    Zeros
    Vals
    Suiseis

I would like to take this opportunity to give a big thanks to the warm hearted gesture by Tim, aka Flying Helmut, not only for sending me the plans he had for Ryujo to assist with me making a 1/200 Clipper special but for sending me the plans for Shoho too. Oh, did I add they were also accompanied by the very same models in 1/700 scale?

    Cheers Tim.
