    Default Introductions here?

    Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place. I'm new and my name is Kate. I'm looking into getting wings of glory and sails of glory for my husbands birthday. We play miniature games but have not played these before. I'm not sure whether to get the ww1 or 2 game. We aren't that big of airplane fans, so it would more boil down to gameplay..

    So, hello!

I think WWI is the better of the two. I started with WWI then got WW2 but have much more fun with WWI. WWI has more plane options if you like painting your own (which I do) with Shapeways and others.
Check the Aerodrome Store on this site.

Me too; WW1 is likely the best place to start for most new players.
You can buy 4 beautifully made and painted aircraft complete with stands for gameplay, the rules book (not at all onerous), etc, etc for less than $100, and this site sells the stuff plus lots of very neat accessories too.
AND, you have joined one of the best player/fan sites on the net ... we are a heck of a gift ... IMO.
In addition if you/he are interested in painting the miniatures there are many places on the net that sell unpainted miniatures etc, etc
I started in 2009 with one aircraft; my dad (82 years), 2 of my brothers and I each bought one. We've been playing the game regularly since then ... one of our wives too and my mother.
Of course, we now have over 200 WWI aircraft .... but we have always been a gaming family. It's gaming + history + collecting, and we stop in April/May to enjoy the summer then start once/month games again in late Oct.
    It's great for kids too.

Welcome to the Drome Kate and can I mention what a lucky man your husband is.
WW1 is the easier option as thing tend to move more slowly than WW2 but both games are good.
Sails has three levels of play. Basic, standard and advanced. Just pick the one that suits.
Have a look on 'The Anchorage' to see what us Jolly Old Salts get upto.
May your sky stay blue but remember to always watch your six!

    Welcome Kate, from Bristol UK.
My own preference is with WW1, the game play is easier to pick up for new starters like yourself, you will soon get the hang of it, after a coule of games youll be hooked, how can you not like pretty biplanes
After that you can try out WGS or even SoG if you like ships.
    Any questions just ask.

Welcome to the aerodrome, Kate, from here near Norwich in the United Kingdom.

I would agree with the others that the WW1 game is easier to learn for beginners. It also has more planes available and they are more colourful.

If you go to http://www.aresgames.eu/7090 , you can download a copy of the Basic and Standard rules to give you an idea of how the game is played. However, you will need the cards, tokens and at least two plane models to play.

The simplest way to begin is with one or both of the WW1 Duel Packs. Each of these contains two model planes, enough cards and tokens to get you started and a copy of the Basic and Standard rules. Sadly, these are currently out of print but Ares Games are due to re-release them in June. I imagine that the Aerodrome Store here will be getting some more in. If you want the full set of rules, cards and tokens, you will need to buy the Rules and Accessories Pack, which the Aerodrome Store does have in stock. You will also need two planes but the game is better, if you have at least four. If you do some internet research, you will find that the Aerodrome Store does sell at very competitive prices, which is why we keep mentioning it.

Rebel mentioned The Anchorage, which is the parallel website for Sails of Glory. Its address is http://SailsofGlory.org. You can download the rulebook from the Ares Games website at http://www.aresgames.eu/9927. Once again, you would also need ship models cards and tokens to play.

Please feel free to ask people here or at The Anchorage questions about the games. We are quite a friendly lot.

Welcome to the 'Drome, Kate, from Middlesex in the U.K.

I think WW1 is better for the colourful planes, the 3-card playing system (more fun when things go wrong!) and also for the greater availability of core aircraft for beginners to lap up!
WW2 is a good game, but the plane manoeuvre decks are all a bit "same-ey", without the diversity of WW1.

As for <<Ahem!>> Sails, well, don't get me started (no-one else has! ) [long-running Forum joke]

Enjoy your time here, and get stuck into these great games!

Advice: Start with a Wings WWI Duel Pack just to try things out and see if you like it. Then consider moving onto the full Rules & Accessories Pack and more planes (next step up). Wings WWII is a bit more complicated than WWI, and Sails is the most "handful" of the line.

Go with whatever's subject interests you more, and that way even if the game doesn't pan out you have something neat for display anyway.

    Kate,
Welcome from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. My introduction to Wings of War was with a Fokker D.VII vs a Sopwith Snipe. What a game! Since, I have been focused mostly on WWI, but dabbling in WWII. I agree with the easier start with WWI, and it gets a bit more complicated in WWII (a very relative term, here. It isn't that much more complicated, but there are advances in technology that had to be reflected in the games)

    Enjoy either, or both!

I agree the Dual Pack would be a great way to dip your toe in but are they still available anywhere? I don't think they would be easy to find. I just did a look and don't see even on any on ebay. (US)

Hang in there. They are reprinting them. They were supposed to be out in April, but we should see them next month in the Aerodrome shop (fingers crossed)

    Thumbs up

G'day Kate & welcome to the Forum on behalf of the Pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.

Whilst I play both WW1 & WW2 One is my favourite. Many more & different Aircraft available with much more manoeuvrability.
Plus you have the great colourful German planes.

Dont forget to get your husband to check in on the Forum as there is just so much great info available here.

As others have said the Duel Packs are an ideal way to dip your toe in if you can locate them.

I also recommend Keith Upton's Aerodrome Store here as a great place to buy minis at a really excellent price.

Welcome Kate, from the W. KY Aerodrome located in Paducah, KY on the banks of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers.
I agree with what most of the guys have said, WWI is the best way to go to learn the basic rules. The rulebooks, Watch Your Back, are quick easy reads, maybe 12 pages long which includes indexes, scenarios, and optional rules. The rules are actually about 6 pages long and have various illustrations.
WWII gets into more advanced rules.
I prefer WWI and have roughly 90 planes as well as about 80 WWII planes.
And yes this is one of the friendliest sights on the web. And Andrea, the game creator is even on here.

Hi Kate and greetings from the great southwest. I do not play the WW2 version but can attest to the fun of the WW1 kit. My wife and daughter like to play and I just gave my son a bunch of my stuff for him and his friends to take it up. I like the variety and colors of the aircraft in the WW1 range, but thats just my opinion. Welcome to the forum, lots of great folks here, and very helpful too.

Welcome aboard Kate. Nice to have another new person to chat with. WOG WWI seems to be the way to go, simple and fun. Heck, my lady and I play a few games a night just for fun and neither one of us will ever see 50 again. Point is it is fun, simple, and does not rely on a lot of luck or die rolls. Biggest problem will be finding planes that match up well. We have gotten into the habit of playing two games at night where we switch planes after the first game. Some planes are WAY better then others so get a few and have fun.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes and replies. So much for waiting until his birthday..I told him I wasn't quite sure what planes to get so he jumped in and ordered the rules and so no planes..sails of glory...
    And a mat. Haha!
We did go with ww1. I really know nothing about planes, but my 5 yr old son absolutely loves them ( used to talk of wanting to be a pilot) and wants to play. I'm hoping we can, for lack of a better word, "dumb" it down for him to join in. We were able to do this with attack wing, so we shall see. Now I might be in search of a ww1 plane coffee table book of some sort..would be nice for him (and myself) to learn more about the planes we choose.
The only issue I've had so far is the fact that some things are hard to find. Like the duel packs, and the starter for ww2. Was there ever a starter for ww1? We're big fans of starters here to see if we like a game without putting a lot of money in at first. Do they think starters aren't needed because the people playing know exactly what planes they want and don't want the starter ones..? I like starters because they are usually evenly matched.
Oh and I see some things I want from the store everyone mentioned...smoke for the ships and fire for the planes. You know women love accessories.

You won't have to dumb it down much Kate - kids are deadly in this game so watch your six ! There aren't many starters ie duel packs because every re-print sells out pretty quick ! Download this from the files section, it is a WOW & WOG Complete Listing up to Feb 2016 and will show you what has been released up until now. We expect a new series in the summer and hope to see a re-print of series 3 later in the year.

    Kate,
Right now on eBay under the Wings of War category, the boxed sets for WWI Famous Aces and Watch Your Back and 3 Fokker Dr.I, a SPAD XIII, and a Sopwith Camel are bundled together. So far the high bid is $31.00US. Bidding ends 9 PM Saturday.
If you want the original rules plus 5 planes at anything under $50 for this bundle would be a steal. Each box set would retail around $30 and each plane around $15.
And considering the Fokker Dr.I's are Mannfred von Richtofen, Rahn, and I believe the last one was Kempf (3 planes from series 1), Along with the Sopwith Camel of Barker and the SPAD XIII of Baracca-SPAD. These are rare planes as long as they are the Nexus ones, rather than the Area reprints.

Kempf, Rahn and Baracca are all Nexus--haven't been reprinted under Ares yet.

Welcome Kate. WWI for me too. I agree the duel pack is the way to start. I guess it depends on when his birthday is vs the reprint of the duel packs that suppose to be out soon. Also note that the duel packs are currently for the WWI version of the game.

welcome to the drome Kate!!!! its always nice to have another player under the same roof! personally i like the ww1 version as it tends to be a little faster paced since people arent deliberating their next maneuver after each maneuver performed but both are fun!
