I am always intrigued in shots of the Japanese Forces how they are always waving their Hats or arms to farewell aircraft etc.

There's a fascinating book about this. I had it in Portuguese so I don't know the name in original called something like "The Clash of Ages. It's about how Japan was forced out of feudalism into modern time and not coping well with it.
