Default Tip - removing the peg from Armaments in Miniature (AIM) models

Most of the 1/200 scale models from Armaments in Miniature, LLC (AIM) come with a steel screw embedded in the belly of the model. The screw sits in a resin peg/post. The arrangement makes it easy for folks who use magnetized stands. Others find the peg a distraction and a reason to avoid the models.

Here's how I remove the pegs on models when the model is not going to be used with a magnetized stand.

To remove the peg I start with a Phillips head screwdriver inserted in the screw. I gently turn the screwdriver counter-clockwise. Much of the time, the resin peg will shear right where it joins the body of the model.

Sometimes the screw will twist out of the peg. In these cases I just remove the resin peg with clippers or a hobby knife.

I snapped the pictures above while removing pegs from six models. In five cases, the peg sheared where it met the model. In the sixth case the screw came out of the peg and I just snipped the peg flush with the fuselage. In any case, I then clean up the area around the hole and fill it with two-part epoxy putty and continue with the build. Kevin

Thank you sir for the info, I have an order coming from AIM, had I not known about that trick it would have thrown me for a loop.

I just ask Dave at AIM not to fit the screws in the first place which he is quite happy to do.

Ouch...now I will have to ask David neither to remove pegs nor the screws from my next ordered minis, which I find very convinient for glueing AA magnet balls.

Good tip. I have a few AIM minis and just remove the screw. A LITKO altitude peg fits into the hole and then I add a wing peg to that. I posted this picture on another thread but gives you an idea of how I mounted them.

My first order I asked not to have the screw but they came with them so I glued a ball bearing to it. Now I have to keep them consistant so leave the screw in place.

Following advice in this thread, I asked Dave to remove the pegs from our miniatures. He was kind enough to do so, and I found it easy to clean up the area with a jeweler's file and then CA glue a 3D printed WoG-compatible peg I sourced from Shapeways.

I don't have beautiful finished models to show off yet, but the solution worked out great for me. The top of the peg perfectly fits the spot where the removed AIM peg was.

The pegs I use are from Columbia Aerodrome / jbmacek:

I have always removed the peg in the same way as described by Kevin.
Then countersink the spot and glue my ball direct to the aircraft body.
If the screw comes out I just glue it back in and repeat process with the driver.
It has never failed me yet.

As you can see from the Betty I did for the big planes I take the screw out and usually that breaks the peg off. Then I glue a LITKO peg in the hole with a wings altitude peg on the bottom. You can adjust the length of the LITKO peg. With the fighters I just glue a bearing to the screw a keep it that way.
