Thread: Victory Points

  1. #1

    Default Victory Points

    Would it be useful to have a thread here to discuss a system for awarding Victory Points for actions completed during a game beyond shooting down planes?

    The rules booklet suggests:

    2 points for each enemy plane shot down;
    1 point for each enemy plane, which leaves the map;
    -1 point for each of your own planes shot down.

    Can we extend this to include say

    2 points for each 'photograph' of a different objective safely brought back to base;
    5 points for successfully completing an artillery observation mission;
    2 points for damaging and 5 points for destroying a target with bombs;
    1 point for machine gunning enemy troops and 5 points for destroying them;
    1 point for forcing down and 5 points for shooting down a balloon;
    10 points for landing behind enemy lines to pick up a spy or downed airman and returning safely to base?

    I know that Hedeby has a points system for awarding achievements in his 'Two-seater Mayhem' games so his input here would be valuable.

    A good idea David, what about simplifying it to 5pts for achieving objective, be it bombing, photo, pick up, recce etc .. 2 pts for damaging /partial success (like photo plane is shot down your side of the lines); there could also be extra victory points for defenders such as 5 pts for taking out a bomber before it drops its eggs maybe? Lots to think on.

    When I play with my group we always count victory points like that, David. This is a very good idea, IMHO.

    Any house rules for downing an HP O/400 or a Staaken ? If a scout is worth 2 what might they be worth?

    The square root of the length of 1 wing divided by the length of the fuselage x2 or w2/fx2.

    It's not actually as easy as that to shoot one down though Neil, Unless you happen to be flying an up gunned Biff and be called Squadron Leader Hedeby that is.

    Don't forget to take into account The Staaken Gap

    Is that anything like the Cumberland gap Pete?

    So back to the original question, does anyone typically award more points for downing the Big Planes, or are they credited like a scout?

    I give more points for larger planes. It all depends on the scenario I'm running. Sometimes 2 seaters get more than a scout, other times not. I had not seen this VP list before so have not used it.

    In FotG scenario "Stop Them!" the allied team receives 30pts for downing a Staaken, 10 pts for any that survive but have more than half damage.
    This is balanced by the Germans getting 1pt per damage point scored against the three allied fighters, or, 20pts per scout downed. (so max 60pts per side). In the "Bomb London !" scenario its 18pts for a Gotha, 12pts per fighter. Anyway I'll let you peruse them at your leisure:
    FotG rules are here in the files

    With approx double the hit points of an ordinary aircraft, I for one give double the victory points. This dissuades the pilots going after two of the easy meat rather than the big boy.
    The exception to this rule is Hedeby, who would have the luck to down the Bomber and two scouts at the same time, plus a Zeppelin on the next table whilst flying a parachute.

    Staaken Gap...I resemble that remark. Or who put that damn balloon there?

    My system of calculating VPs:

    +x Number of arcs of fire
    +1 for scout base
    +2 for small giant base
    +3 for large giant base
    Leaving the field in disadventage (tailed, shot at etc.) - half VPs rounded down.
    Leaving at wrong side = destroyed
    Ressurection +1 to the enemy.

    Baloons: 2-4 points, depending on scenario and included observers.

    Mision VPs depend on scenario. Usually:
    - Photo mission 2pts per target (3 if pictured twice).
    - Destroyed ground target is 1-2 (sometimes 0) pts if no heavy bombers involved. Sometimes more, depending on it's HP/firepower and it's part in scenario.

    Bombing.
    Basically, I plan bombloads first and then asign HP based on that.
    VPs are based on damage inflicted.
    Example:
    Heavy bomber carries two loads, 40 damage each.
    Target has 70 HP.
    0 - 6 damage = 4 VPs to defender
    7 - 19 damage = 0 VPs
    20 - 39 damage = 2 VPs to attacker
    40 - 59 damage = 4 VPs to attacker
    60 - 69 damage = 5 VPs to attacker
    70 (full) damage = 6 VPs to attacker
    If damage inflicted only by strafing, attacker's VPs are halved, rounding down.

    So, in above example, any successfull bombing gives VPs to attacker. The more bombing damage inflicted, more VPs to the attacker. If bomber fails, strafing may help to some extent.

    Thanks for the mention - I use 'mission' cards which players uncover and complete as the game progresses so each side can try and complete a variety of missions or just shoot the opposition down and stop them from accrusing points, this gives quite a bit of flexibility, I will get the whole lot uploaded once I have had my tutorial on how to upload files properly.
