Thread: Kickstarter Maps

  1. #1

    Default Kickstarter Maps

Had a look at the KS maps today and have to say, that they look awesome.

All maps have a full WoG game mat size ad fit to the existing ones.

Due to the folding you have to think about, how to flaten and store those maps.

The "No man's land" map fits perfect between the other gaming mats. (I used a coast and a country mat.)

Light differences in colour because of the printed material, I think.

The KS card, I like the most ist the Mannheim industrial aera map.

Beautiful designed with some strange railroad track directions this one fits very perfect to the surrounding coast and country mats.

A perfect target for bomber and reconaissance missions.

You have bridges, industrial and official buildings, streets, railroad tracks, main stations, harbour installations, a chateau and many other nice targets you can sssign to your bomber planes.

I think this one could be perfectly used for WGF and WGS missions.

Tha maps of London are a little bit thougher to arrange with the existing gaming mats.

We need to find a solution for that, but they have a beautiful design, too.

Of course, if you now a little bit about the British capital you can't use it as Berlin, but I can imagine some He.111s above those citiy maps.

In my opinion, an Ares Games project, to bring the "no-man's-land" and the "Mannheim" KS map as regular gaming mats would be very successful.

Sames goes for maybe a limited "City of London" gaming mat combo.

Another 160 $ (calculating 40$ per mat) I would invest into WoG without hesitating.

Hopefully the wrinkles can be minimized.

I agree and would buy a set of these maps if ARES produces them.

SWMBO reckons sandwich them between brown paper and run a warm iron over them. I will experiment when we get back from Beachhead this weekend.
Currently they are unfolded on my table and 'easing off'. Once flattened I might try rolling them up with the mats for storage or in their own poster tube.
Do look great though don't they !

Thanks for this write up Sven. I've looked at one of the maps and thought it looked good, but I have not had time to lay any of them out with the other mats. I ordered extras of these during the KS to sell via the AA store for those that missed them and for anyone wanting extras/backups. I'm going to try and get them (and other KS things) added to the site before next week.

I can already see a use for a second Mannheim map at conventions. Cut that map down to just the city portion and laminate it. Then as the Game Master you can use dry erase markers to mark the targets for the bomber pilots. That way they know where they have to bomb, it's written down so hits can be verified and there is nothing on the table for the defenders to see what the targets might be.

I'm thinking of getting a sheet of thin perspex, cut to the same size as the map, to lay over the top as a temporary measure to reduce the creases.

Also, I ordered extra maps, in case I stuff it up!

    Something to consider, Tim.

My wife uses a plastic foil to save the dinner room table from scratches.

Maybe I give this a chance.

Good idea, but your bomber pilots need pokerfaces during the mission.

Let me come up with another idea. I have unfolded all maps and they are truly great, but the poster format is the main downside and I do not see playing on them like they are now.
The point is - a print shop could print on vinyl virtually anything nowadays. And vinyl is another story - useful, sturdy, eternal.
    So:
    1. flatten the maps.
    2. visit a professional photo studio - ask for taking a professional high resolution photos of the unfolded maps and saving them on a pendrive.
    3. visit a printshop and print the image on a vinyl.
    Pro:
    - professionally looking and sturdy playing mat.
    Con:
    - ARES copyright.
ARES - you need not reading this post.

So far: Cogitationis poenam nemo patitur.

Must admit the matmaps are a must have. I'm ironing mine flat and rolling up in a poster tube.

Agreed - they look great and would sell well. Although for me I'd like them to bring out half length sized versions of the NML and the river so that when placed between the two countryside maps the size would be 2 1/2 map lengths. Otherwise I may have to get a bigger dining room table : )

Also, it would be nice for the river if it extended off the edge of a map. As it is a large ship would not be able to travel very far along the river before getting stuck : )

The city maps (London or not) would work equally in WGF and WGS on any front. These are the best ones.

The last time I talked to Roberto about mats, Ares was still wanting to release new rubber mats. He said they would most likely come out with the campaign rules set. But that there was no hard timeline for that set... even though he wants it sooner rather than later.

As I am no where near my packs I can't really say. But one would do nice. I'm also going to photo it. Print it small and use it like Keith mentioned as a target map for bombers.

Not sure if this would work but what about ironing the creases out by using a damp tea towel and warm iron and then gluing the map to the back of a mat? I have a Sails of Glory mat that I could try that with.

Though I don't disagree that city maps will work for both WGF and WGS and, therefore, may appeal to a larger audience... I will continue to pine for a NML/Trench map done in the style of Ares' current mats.

All right, 3 pieces of plexiglass 3mm 1000/680 mm ordered online for app. 55 Euro incl. delivery to door.
That will give me a 2m/1m playing surface over 3 poster maps - various sets. No printing on vinyl needed any more.
    Can't wait.

Not to mention that in WWII "precision bombing" meant "we just flatten a neighborhood" as opposed to "flatten and torch the entire city including any nearby POW camps".

Now we just need some Pacific maps, snow maps and we're almost completely covered.
    If Ares provide, I'll buy.

But the Oberst's maps are the same paper ones included with the giants; I think what everyone is after are the future project "Ares intend to do it" flexi-mats (same as Countryside/City/Coast) but printed with the noman's land/Mannheim vistas.

    I'd buy them, too!

For the wealth endowed ...... TV Series Hawaii 5.0 features a table the team gather round that is really a huge computer screen. Imagine having one of those and displaying the map of choice with the click of a button for the game you want to play. Instant winner. Just plonk your planes on it and off you go.

I was looking at the London map so much I forgot to even check then no-man's-land map. Awesome. I love these new maps.

I too would like to see the paper mats released as normal rubber backed mats. I would also like to see the results of ironing the mats, sandwiching them between plexiglass or maybe laminating them. It is a pity that the maps were folded rather than being rolled up.

We all are hoping that Ares releases a version of these maps as a new Game Matt -- the XXL mouse-pad

Until then we're trying to figure out ways to turn them into a more playable options

I'd tried to print my own game matts but I cant find mouse pad meterial that large here in Argentina
