Default SND - International Skype Game Invitation - Stop the Pigeon!

I'm warming up to that altitude thing. More training with Darell [grumpybear]. This time, we have an RE.8 attempting to get images to produce a map for the latest offensive. The Luftstreitkräfte must stop them! Darell [grumpybear] has dibs on flying on the German side.

Again this is a game between me and Darell, primarily, the timings are not too bad for European players. Being a Saturday, perhaps Central and Eastern North American players can jump in.

Note: I was intending to hold another public demo game at my Local Friendly Gaming Store. However, like this past weekend, they are holding yet another Magic, the Gathering event. So, more noise and crowds that will be too focused on other things. Back to the Garage!

Again, as with our most recent game, every plane will have an "Altitude" number beside the plane stand, so everyone can tell what the altitude is for each plane, even with the overhead view.

Thanks to Mark Gibbons, and his PBM AARs for the great idea for indicating altitude!

We weren't very successful with the random Ace Skill option, so we'll try that again. Everyone draws a B Damage Card, and I determine what, if any, skill the pilot gets. This will be as pilots sign in to the game on Skype. Ace Skill cards are posted in my album WGF Ace Skill Cards.

Are you interested in running a game? How do I set up for it?

This is the set-up in my messy garage

I have a laptop with very good graphics (near edge of the table, with screen to the playing area. [It is now eight years old, so not bleeding edge technology. It was good in it's day, but not ridiculous]). I bought a Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 - Web camera ($35.99 Cdn), and I use that with an extender USB cable to get it over the table. I use a Drywall Square and painter tape to kludge the camera over the table. With the HD wide-angle lens, I don't have to get the camera too high up to cover the playing area. You can see it in the top right corner of the picture, over the garage door.

I use my laptop built-in microphone and speakers to play the game. I get the game set up in advance, and get all the contact IDs ready on my Skype account. In this photo, I was set up for an HMS Glorious sinking. On the left is my console table, with consoles for all the planes that will be on the table. I have maneuver decks for each plane (so I can move them), and any special notes are kept with each plane. Damage is tracked by the players at their end, and the player can send in images of the damage cards/chits, or we sort it out at the end, and I take the images, as we did on 13 Feb.

At the appointed time, I start calling all the people who are logged in to Skype, that indicated they want to play. If not decided in advance, we assign planes and sides, do any other admin/book-keeping and set up the planes. Also, we discuss any rules variations we want to consider.

Then, we play! I take overhead shots as the game progresses, for AARs, and laughs.

We start with planning, and when everyone says they are ready, I ask around the table for their moves, place the cards and move the planes. When everyone is moved, I do any range measurements, and we declare hits. Players draw damage for their planes, and declare any visible damage. I mark the planes with smoke, flame, explosions and take photos. Any gun jams are declared.

Reveal next move, and repeat. It is just like playing at a tourney, but there is only one set of hands on the minis, so drinks and food are allowed for any participants but me.

The real sad part of this, is no drinks and laughs at the bar afterwards, but we do have a debrief, if everyone has the time.

Really, guys. Give this a go. It isn't too much harder than hosting a game at a club.

PS: Set-up at the Friendly Local Gaming Store in December...

Great looking set-up, Mike. I'm going to do what I can to clear my schedule and figure out this Skype nonsense. I've got a couple of (most likely) easily-solved questions, but I'll PM you should I stumble.

Thanks for the invite. Assuming I'm able to make this work, I'll be happy playing whatever is available.

If you are feeling bold Mike how about we try allowing some of these maneuvers.

A bit fast for me, Paul. I'm just getting comfortable with this altitude stuff.

Oh! And way back when I joined the Forum, there were maneuver decks on the site. These were removed for copyright reasons, but there were some extra cards for which there weren't any rules.

Having played the last game, I now realize what these cards represented. I may have to do up some extra cards for our games, if we want to continue House Ruling the climbing and diving turns.

Sounds like a good idea Mike. if you cannot post them on the Files section i would be happy to have a PDF of them when you are finished tweaking them.

As for the other maneuvers just a taster for what can be done, especially if you have the ace ability of acrobatic pilot .

Another awesome game, with some new players.

Sam [zenlizard] flew an Albatros D.Va, with Darell [grumpybear] starting with an Aviatik D.1, ending with another Albatros D.Va. Neil [Skafloc] didn't connect, so I flew the pigeon, an RE8, with Paul [tikkifriend] escorting me. Peter [Stumptonian] was spectating. This game started a bit late, trying to let others join in, but we started around 10:30~ish PST.

We drew for Ace Skills, and this time the odds were in our favour! I drew Perfect Aim for my pilot, and Bullet Checker for my Observer. Sam got Strong Constitution, and although not playing, Peter drew a Bullet Checker, too (in case he jumped into the game).

I was flying with pin-point accuracy to get the aerial photos, going right over the targets with stalls! I managed to take out Darell with two pilot wounds, and he came on with the second plane, as I wasn't finished attempting photos. As I was finishing the photo run, Sam decided to ram me. I got away from that, but Sam ran for home from the accumulated damage.

Then, I must have taken a concussion from the ramming, as I started planning my escape. I was picking wrong turns all over the place, and I ended up running right into Darell. Down I went, as I drew the opposite end of the numbers from my first collision.

So much for altitude. I was at 4 to start, dropped to 3, and stayed there til I plummeted from the sky. That ended the scenario with the Germans preventing the recon photos getting back to the Allies.

We got the damage sorted out, and discussed our next foray and date. Signed off just before 1 PM, so just over 2 and a half hours to play, counting breaks.

Again, a great game, with new friends! Always a plus. More detailed AAR to follow, and next game will be a Balloon-Buster scenario with AA and rockets. See you all on 12 March!

Sam is on the bottom left, running for home, Paul is out of frame at the bottom left-of-center, with his accumulated damage. Darell and I are at the bottom right-of-center, with my damage above. Darell's second plane was unscathed, taking a "0" for the collision!

I thoroughly enjoyed the game; and having tried out the house rules climbing & diving turns, fully support them for future games.

BTW, the ramming wasn't intentional: I was trying to get in position for a close-range shot, not realizing that wasn't really do-able with the space remaining between the two of our aircraft. La Vie.

Looking forward to the next game; I like the idea of a balloon strafe, if we go with that, I'm there.

The ramming might not have been intentional Sam, but it got the job done

For anyone interested in how we selected Ace Skills for this game:

To hand out the skills, I came up with a quick selection process. Participants drew 'B' damage cards. If they drew a special damage, they got an Ace Skill. For this game, I used the following skills:

    Boom: . . . . . . . . . . Lucky Pilot
    Fire: . . . . . . . . . . . Daredevil
Rudder Jam Left: . . Acrobatic Pilot
Rudder Jam Right: . Height Control
Gun Jam Red: . . . . Sniper (Due to the way damage is done over Skype, this was replaced with Bullet Checker in our game)
Gun Jam Green: . . . Bullet Checker
    Pilot Wound: . . . . . Strong Constitution
Engine Damage: . . Perfect Aim
    Smoke: . . . . . . . . . Itchy Trigger Finger
