Summary: Sub titled, 'The disastrous Java Sea Campaign of World War II'
415 pages, 58 pages of notes, 27 black and white photo's and 5 maps/diagrams with an extensive bibliography.
The author relies heavily on first hand accounts and reports from the ONI. The only downfall of the book is the lack of maps and battle diagrams.
An extensive study not only of the engagements but of the commanders themselves. He puts into perspective how events dictated operations and draws his own, fair minded conclusions of commanders, criticised for their own actions by others after their deaths, from the political and military angle.
A worthy read of how to loose a war (well the beginning anyway) when you outnumber the enemy by surrendering the initiative and sending many men to a pointless death.
