Default Official Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina Painting Thread

A Midway PBY-5A of VP-44 on patrol 3 June 1942; Ensign Jack Reid and his crew out looking for trouble. Or the Japanese carriers, although for a PBY that's very much the same thing.

Shapeways WSF model by jbmacek, Vallejo and Tamiya paint (deicing boots done with a permanent marker), decals homemade ('44-P-4') and Mehusla, prop discs from Aerodrome Accessories. A big, impressive model that was quite fun to paint.

Thank you, sir . Initially I thought the PBYs at Midway were all straight 5s (ie, flying boats), so I was devastated when I ordered John's Catalina and discovered it was a 5A amphib. Fortunately, a little research showed that not only were PBY-5As present, the crew that first discovered the Japanese invasion force were in one .

Here is a 1/200 Shapeways 'Catalina PBY-5a early' designed by JBMACEK. (Wildcat for scale) I got this during the Christmas day sale. Painted this up with the Devastators and Bettys, fittingly it trailed behind being the slowest (not by much!) and was finished last.

That I like. I thought it was a tad expensive, but having seen this one painted up I might now indulge.

If it wasn't on sale I don't think I would have purchases one. AIM should soon have one. I just put in an order and in emails from Dave he mentioned he has one in the works.

Nice to see one in action for a WGS scenario.
There will also be one of these in the ORIGINS scenario "Yamamoto's Folly" this June in Columbus.
This scenario takes place on June 2, 1942, but in Dutch Harbor Alaska, the day before Battle of Midway commenced.
My copy is a metallic diecast model so am still working on proper base and movement cards.
As stated by others, your rendition is superb.

    G'day Chaps & Lass's.

I thought I had posted pics of my Shapeways RAAF Cat previously but maybe only in my Bismarck Sea AAR.
Anyway I think I was the first to purchase one of John's Cats & it is a superb model that I can recommend to everyone.

Pics below plus some historic shots as well.

Thanks Thomas. Hopefully I'll get to see your fly at Origins. If you can't get it based up for whatever reason I can bring mine.

Fantastic job as always Kevin. I purchased a Shapeway WSF Catalina three years ago (see below). It was my first WSF aircraft and back then I did not realise how rough the surface was (only get FUD now).

Dave's AIM stuff is so good I might have to go back and get another one.

The WGS unofficial aircraft committee have since given the Cat 23 damage points, a max altitude of 5 not 7 (have to check that) and a custom O(Zb) deck but I have yet to see the cards for that option.

I agree. Mine is Shapeways and is very rough too. I think an AIM version will fly my way soon.

That surprises me Carl as my Shapeways WSF one was very smooth.

Here's a PBY of VP-101 near Java, February 1942. Shapeways WSF model by John Macek, with AE Models 500 lb. bombs as its underwing ordnance. Italeri and Vallejo paints were used, as were Mehusla and Microscale decals, and AA propeller discs.

    Grand job!

And I must say, I'm not usually a fan of the spinning props, but those look spot on.

The prop discs are a bit of an acquired taste for me; I'd never remove propeller blades from a model that included them, but for those that don't, they are very nice.

Thanks all; John Macke's PBYs are fun to work with, and there are some interesting Catalina schemes out there. Recently got Osprey's US Navy PBY Units of the Pacific War, which has a VP-101 Catalina on the cover. At first I thought the cover artist was crazy, because I didn't think the USN ever painted any of its aircraft in this way, but Admiral Hart, commander of the Asiatic Fleet, did order Patrol Wing 10 to camouflage its PBYs as war became likely, and they did so in an extemporized scheme with what paint they had on hand.

Nice Cat Darryl. Hmmm, with the great camo on yours, Barry and Carl's I will definitely have to do another with a camo scheme.

My rendition of a PBY-5A from VP-14, Pearl Harbor, December, 1941.

She is 1/200 AIM, using Misc Mini decals and Vallejo Air paints. One BIG thing I will do on the next one is paint the wings, struts and upper fuselage BEFORE gluing it together. As much as I’ve been enjoying painting, that was not fun trying to accurately paint around when assembled!
