Thread: Fokker D.VII Challenge!

  1. #51

I think there have been a couple of decal threads in the hobby section. Let's move this discussion over there to keep this thread more contest focused.

So this will be a most popular plane contest. Somewhere down the line there should be an actual painting contest with no decals.

Hi everybody, I joined the Aerodrome, to qualify for repainting contest. As you probably recognized, I'm Pilot's Co-pilot
My English is unfortunately very poor, so I'll use Nemanja's interpetation skills.
    Best regards to all

I will endorse what the Herr Oberst has said and although I have already greeted you on behalf of the U.K. on the other thread, make this my personal greetings to you here.
Enjoy the site and fly safe.

About time there were more ladies present - welcome!
Having practice painting nails, having nailfiles etc is an advantage, though long nails can get in the way.

Just submitted my entry. A scheme I doubt anyone else will have chosen, and for which there are definitely no commercial decals!

Wow, Zoe! That was quickly done! Guess that's a reminder to us all to get going if we aren't already...

Welcome to the Forum, Jelena! Good luck with your contest entry

Our Valom double kit arrived just yesterday so we still have plenty of time. However, we need to choose painting scheme - which isn't easy at all...

I'm looking forward to seeing both of your entries - and guessing which one is which! You do great work. As for painting schemes - there was one I'd been wanting to try for some time, this was a good excuse.

Then there's all the schemes on 30s pulp magazine covers like this one -

I did find myself looking at the Germans in the new Peanuts movie, but the only D.VII scheme that stood out was obviously based on Kirschstein's machine anyway. I may end up doing Fifi's lilac winged Camel some time though, just for giggles.

I'm in, too. The Valom kit should arrive next week. This will be the first time I have to make my own decals. Nice contest. I wouldn't repaint a original WoG plane, but kits are ok.

Far too big.... One thing I found interesting in the film was that they kept Snoopy's doghouse, well, doghouse sized, so it could tuck up alongside the cockpit of a plane. I'd rather not admit how much I enjoyed the film though - a great nostalgia fest for me....

Dumb question of the year . Does the model need to be assembled or just painted?

  28. #78

    You can do either Darell.
At the moment I am disassembling one in the freezer.

Just painted. It's OK to have a model pre-assembled before the contest starts. It can even be painted - it's just that if it is, it must be re-painted in the contest period.

If you have problems there, PM me and I'll see if I can help. It wouldn't be the first time I've done this for other contestants. I can either make a design for you to print yourself, or send some in an airmail envelope.

I'm coming late to the conversation. (I don't check the site nearly as often as I used to.) I was just reading through the comments about painting vs decaling lozenge pattern. I say PAINT! If I can do it in 1:600 scale, surely some of you expert painters can do it in 1:144! [Apologies. It is difficult to get a good photo at that scale Edit again... think I have a clear one now. I'm sure the magnification will do the paint job appearance no good.]

While most of the AEG G.IVk lozenge is decalled, around the tail and rudder it was just too fiddly, so that bit is painted.

Provided there are no large areas - more than 1cm x 1cm - the slight imperfections don't show up. But for larger areas, it takes an expert to get them right.

    I'm no expert!

Note the lozenge strips are chordwise on the wings (and with no attempt to make the strips line up, some are even inverted), but spanwise on control surfaces.

On the G.IV, it would take an expert signwriter using templates to get the hexagons sufficiently regular.

One entry painted, decalled and ready to go Zoe. Thanks for the decal sheet from many moons ago. I just altered the colours on Photoshop to fit my requirements.

This certainly seems to be a popular paint comp. But there again the DRVII lends its self to a a good paint respray.
