Thread: My Other Obsession . . .

  1. #1

    Default My Other Obsession . . .

Just spent a delightful week out in an alfalfa field with 60 other Flying Aces enthusiasts (crazies), the Turbo Porter beckons . . .

And I am drawn into the sky . . . the winding

    The long walk back

A Moth gets wings and winds

The Cessna gets a once over by a legend in the event . . .

And then takes to the sky

Awards banquet came with extra desserts!

B-24's were very popular as they flew over head, sorry no in flight shots, I was busy flying and chasing!

The Lancaster fell victim to a nasty side slip from altitude . . .

A glimpse at the talent busy in the field:

    And the judging rooms snaps:

Over 100 amazing rubber powered free flight models appeared and they all flew just as well as they looked, an international gathering, due back here in 2017

Did I have a good time?

Lovely pics, takes me back to my teenage years a log, long time ago now, when I used to free glide models as well as fly rubber powered and a 24" Alcohol engined control line Spitfire. 3.5cc AMCO motor, massively over powered but did it go!
    Happy Days!

Lots of nice planes there, David. Congratulations on your placements. Glad to see you're out and about with a fun crowd.
I wonder: has anyone flown the Do.335 with both props going?

    Thanks for the show Dave.
All those aircraft look great, and I bet you had a great time with your friends flying them and sharing a yarn or two.
What more could you ask for than an event like that in the sunshine.
All the ingredients that we enjoy in re-enacting. The companionship of like minded people.

David thank you very much for sharing this hobby of yours with us. I used to have a lot of fun dabbling with gliders when I was young - my favourite of all time was a rubber band-powered Keil Craft aircraft which one of my cousins handed down to me at the start of his remote control flying days.

In a way I prefer this form of flying models to RC flying: Most of all because there is no possibility of drifting out of transmitter range or a speed / power induced accident extensively damaging what one has built

Great pictures there, thanks for posting!

Looks like a lot of fun - it's something I only tried once, with greatly disappointing results!

I didn't realize there was such a thing as rubber powered aircraft, other than the 15 or 25 cent ones my older brother and I used to buy and paint up as Spits and 109s 50+ years ago.
We used to soap the rubber bands so we could wind them up really tight.

I wonder if this will catch on in the UK? Or has it already? Great models there David and well done on your awards.

Fond memories are awakened looking at your pictures, David! I have good memories of rubber-band-powered planes from my youth - although nothing quite as elaborate as yours...

Gorgeous stuff there! Thanks for sharing the pictures and experiences.

    All the best,
    Matt

    Lovely Dave.
Especially the Lancaster silhouetted against the sky.

PS. The shirt's not bad either.
