Default Want to buy a Spitfire?

This makes a great read. Costs a fortune to keep one in the air.

    Thanks for posting.
I don't think even a lottery win will make this possible ....

Actually, for a repro, not much at all. Better (your laws may vary), in the USA and UK, they count as ultra-lights, so do not need a pilots license.

    3/4-scale, but:

$4,995 for a basic kit; or $5,495 for the whole match minus engine (there's so many available, prices are all over the place).

What a nice info! I was just joking, but now its actually seems a really great idea to get some E.IIIs and Moranes lol.

It's not the value of the aircraft or what it requires that's going to be the dream-smasher ... It's the insurance! Especially after the recent air show or vintage aircraft accidents there have been in the UK.

I noted that the article very sensibly stated that there are structural and performance-related limitations which are there to stop amateurs from hooning around the skies as they please: Exceed these even once and the examination the aircraft has to undergo costs GBP £120,000!

Wonder what an article like this on buying and preserving an airworthy NA P-51D Mustang would reveal in terms of figures? The insurance would still be the worst of it I'm sure ...

Well, I guess the insurance is worth of, since crashing a Spitfire would not be so cool, unless you're looking through a 109 cockpit.
