Thumbs up >> An Updated Tactical Walk Through of Aircraft <<

This thread is designed to give new players to the game some insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the various aircraft available as miniatures in Wings of Glory and is an expansion on Scott's original work of 2010, now including all aircraft types to date and a little extra data.

It is vitally important that you know the capabilities of your enemy's aircraft as well as your own. This can give you valuable insight when in combat and will give you a much better chance of survival or victory ! Know your own planes capabilities, review your manoeuvre deck before you engage in a mission, check your climb rate if using altitude and play to your strengths.
Finally, remember that in combat sometimes doing the unexpected can save your hide.

Key to some of the verbiage used:

    Climb Rates:
    2 - Best / fast
    3 - Good / Ave
    4 - Slow
    5 - Poor
    6 plus - Rubbish

    Speeds:
    6 - Very Fast (A,N decks)
    4.7 - Fast (B,C,F,Fr,H,L,M,O,Q,S,U decks)
    3.5 - Average (D,I,J,K,V,W,X decks)
2.9 - Slow (E,G,P,R,T,Y decks) [All decks standard sideslip longer than straight]
2.3 - Very Slow (XD deck)
    1.3 - Sluggish (XB,XC decks)
    0.7 - Pedestrian (XA deck)
The last three deck speeds are assigned to WoG Bomber types but don't be fooled - their bases are bigger so they're not as slow as you might think. You have been warned ! The decks may be used, however, with 'unofficial' scout & tandem models with standard sized bases in which case the descriptions do very much apply.

    Strength:
    30+ - Resoundingly tough !
    20-30 - Uber Tough
    17 - Rudely Tough
    15/16 - Tough
    14 - Robust
    13 - Fairly robust
    12 - Weak
    11 - Fragile
    10 - Frail

A Tactical Walk Through of Scouts

    Fokker E.III - T Deck
Strengths - Standard sideslip longer than straight
Weaknesses - Fragile, Slow, Rubbish climber, B gun
    Users - Central Powers 15/Q3 to 16/Q3
This is a fragile monoplane aircraft with 11 damage points, a rubbish climb rate of 6 and a ceiling of 9. The T deck has the same basic moves as the A,S & V decks, just slower than them all. It can stand up for itself in the early war mix if flown with care or flair - It is after all, the Fokker scourge !!
An Ares Model. Series 5 released 2012

    Halberstadt D.III - P Deck
Strengths - Robust, Broad left/right side slips, Standard sideslip longer than straight, few up-gunned to A guns.
Weaknesses - Slow, Slow climber, B Gun
    Users - Central Powers 16/Q1 to 17/Q2
A robust performer with 14 damage points but suffers from slow speed and a slow climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 9. The P deck trades a standard side slip each way for a broad side slip each way that gives it a little agility. Having only a B gun limits its attack, though a few up-gunned so had A guns, but the robustness of this crate should see you through nearly anything thrown at you.
An Ares Model. Series 5 released 2012

    Airco DH.2 - P Deck
Strengths - Fairly Robust, Broad left/right side slips, Standard sideslip longer than straight
Weaknesses - Slow, Rubbish climber, B Gun
    Users - Entente 16/Q1 to 18*/Q4 (*Middle East only Q3/17 to Q4/18)
A fairly robust 'pusher' kite with 13 damage points, slow with a rubbish climb rate of 6 and ceiling of 10. The P deck trades a standard side slip each way for a broad side slip each way, so a little help with its agility if used well. The robustness of this crate compares well against some earlier types so should keep you in the fight long enough to get the job done.
An Ares Model. Series 5 released 2012

    Nieuport 11 - E Deck
Strengths - Broad (steep) sides slips, Standard sideslip longer than straight, A gun when equipped
Weakness - Slow, Frail, B gun variant
    Users - Entente 16/Q1 to 17/Q2
This is a slow, frail aircraft with 10 damage points; it has no special manoeuvres and an slow climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 11 which stacks well against some of its opponents of its time. Can come with le Prieur rockets for 'balloon work'. Another that flown with flair may surprise.
New optional rules/ace skills come with these models:
An Ares Model. Series 9 released 2016

    Nieuport 16 - R Deck
Strengths - Fast climber, Good ceiling, Sideslip longer than straight
Weaknesses - Frail, Slow, No special moves, B gun
    Users - Entente 16/Q2 to 17/Q2
With only 10 damage points this aircraft is frail in the greater scheme of things but is there, or, thereabouts amongst its contemporaries. Models are only supplied with le Prieur rockets fitted for 'balloon work' or 'Tripod work'.
Climb rate given as 5, ceiling 10 in (Nexus) WoW Balloon Busters expansion - these may be stats for rocket laden machine as the unofficial stats give it a great climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 12 which may reflect the more powerful engine fitted to the airframe.
The Nexus R deck has the same basic moves as the B & J decks just slower than both - used properly it can stand up for itself in the early war mix.
The Ares R deck has a broad sideslip each way added to deck - way more manoeuvrable !
Two Nexus Models (Only came with Balloon Busters Expansion & equipped with Le Prieur rockets).
Two Ares models (Released with Tripods & Triplanes 2019 - one in starter set, one on it's own, both equipped with Le Prieur rockets)

    Morane Saulnier N - T Deck
Strengths - Sideslip longer than straight
Weaknesses - Frail, Slow, Poor climber, B gun
    Users - Entente 15/Q2 to 16/Q2
This is a frail monoplane type with just 10 damage points and not helped by its poor climb rate of 5 with a ceiling of 9. The T deck has the same basic moves as the A,S & V decks just slower than them all - It can stand up for itself in the early war mix if flown with care... just don't expect too much.
An Ares Model. Series 5 released 2012

    Nieuport 17/23 - I Deck
Strengths - Good climber; Short wide side-slip manoeuvres, has A gun option
Weaknesses - Weak airframe, Average speed; the B Gun variant, Short wide side-slip manoeuvre is steep
    Users - Entente N.17: 16/Q1 to 17/Q3; N.23: 17/Q2 18/Q1
With just 12 damage points this is a weak aircraft but has a climb rate of 3 and ceiling of 12 so you have to use it with care and pick your moment but some, as seen in history, can be very successful with it so dismiss it at your peril.
    A Nexus & Ares Model - Series 3 released 2009 & 3a(Reprint) released 2017

    Albatros D.II - V Deck
Strengths - Robust, Average speed, A Guns
Weaknesses - Poor climber; the B Gun variant
    Users - Central Powers 16/Q4 to 17/Q4
This is a robust machine with 14 damage points but with its climb rate of 5 it can't climb for toffee ! It has a ceiling of 11 so can have a height advantage on most its contemporaries. More importantly the A deck means it usually outguns its Entente enemy. Should get the job done for you.
An Ares Model. Series 7 released 2014

    Albatros D.III - J Deck
    Strengths - Robust, A guns
Weaknesses - No special manoeuvres, Average speed, Slow climber
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q1 to 18/Q1
Very similar to the Alb D.II and should be flown in the same manner. With no special manoeuvres, average speed and a climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 12 this is a pretty average aircraft but with 14 damage points it's quite robust and it is this coupled with its A guns that will carry it through against most of its Entente contemporaries
    A Nexus & Ares Model -. Series 3 released 2009 & 3a(Reprint) released 2017

    SPAD VII - B Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, Fast climber
Weaknesses - No special manoeuvres, B Guns
    Users - Entente 16/Q4 to 17/Q4
A solid little crate with 15 damage points, a climb rate of 2 and ceiling of 14, it's more than a match for its Central Powers contemporaries, use in a similar way to the Spad XIII by employing hit and run tactics, though the B gun may not always reap the rewards you wish for !
An Ares Model. Series 7 released 2014

    Sopwith Triplane - U Deck
Strengths - Fairly Robust, Fast, Two 90 degree right turns, L/R short wide side slips (steep) good climber, A Guns
Weaknesses - B Gun variant (most common configuration)
    Users - Entente 17/Q1 to 17/Q4
Not the strongest with 13 damage points though a good climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14. This is offset by the U deck - a faster version of the D deck - so this aircraft has the agility of the Fokker Dr.1 manoeuvre wise but with the speed to back it up. It is an excellent dog fighter in the right hands the only downside possibly being the B gun variant.
An Ares Model. Series 6 released 2013

    Albatros D.Va- B Deck
Strengths - Fast, Tough; A guns
Weaknesses - no special manoeuvres; slow climber
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This is a fast, tough aircraft with 15 damage points but it has no special manoeuvres and a slow climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 14. Essentially a slightly stronger and faster version of the D.III that uses the same basic manoeuvres only faster - use the extra speed to your advantage to catch or out run your foe !
    A Nexus & Ares Model. Series 1 2007; Deluxe Edition 2006 & Revised Deluxe Edition 2011; 1a (reprint) & Duel Pack released 2013 & reprint 1b 2019

    SPAD XIII - A Deck
Strengths - Very fast, Tough, Fast climber, A guns
    Weaknesses - no special manoeuvres;
    Users - Entente 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
One of the fastest but least manoeuvrable aircraft out there, it can out run or run down anything the Germans have, it is also a top climber with a climb rate of 2 and ceiling of 15. Use the hit and run tactic with this plane; use the Immelmann to quickly reverse direction and use the stall to keep on target before powering away.
With 16 damage points it can be tough to put down.
    A Nexus & Ares Model. Series 1 2007; Deluxe Edition 2006 & Revised Deluxe Edition 2011; 1a (reprint) & Duel Pack released 2013 & reprint 1b 2019

    Sopwith Camel - C Deck
Strengths - Fast, Tough, Good climber, Three 90 degree right turns, A guns
    Weakness - No 90 left.
    Users - Entente 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This was one of Britain's best, a fast, tough fighter with 15 damage points, a climb rate of 3 and a max altitude of 13. The three 90 degree right turns can give it distinct advantages in a turning fight so watch your approach when flying with it or against it !
    A Nexus & Ares Model. Series 1 2007; Deluxe Edition 2006 & Revised Deluxe Edition 2011; 1a (reprint) & Duel Pack released 2013 & reprint 1b 2019

    R.A.F. SE5a - N Deck
Strengths - Very fast, Tough, Fast climber, L/R 90 degree turns, Short wide sideslips, A Guns
Weakness - 90 degree turns & Short wide side slips are 'steep', the B gun variant
    Users - Entente 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
One of the two fastest aircraft in the game and very durable with 16 damage points and a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 12. Suffers from having only single 90 turns and that they, and the wide side slips, are steeps - a great handicap if your pilot gets wounded - but with good planning it can prove deadly.
    A Nexus Model. Series 4 released 2010 & Series 4a (reprint) 2019

    R.A.F. SE5 - Fr Deck
Strengths - Fast, Tough, Fast climber, L/R 90 degree turns, Short wide sideslips, A Guns
Weakness - 90 degree turns, Short wide side slips & Sideslip each way are 'steep'
    Users - Entente 17/Q2 to 17/Q3
An early, lower powered version of one of the best aircraft produced for the RFC. Very durable with 16 damage points and a climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 12 (Andrea). Slower than it's later version but still a fast machine, it suffers from having only single 90 turns each way and that they, the wide side slips and a side slip each way are steep - a great handicap if your pilot gets wounded - but with good planning it could still prove deadly.
An Ares Model. Series 4a (reprint) 2019
(Andrea: Fr deck is basically a N deck with shorter arrows. But SE.5 is also a bit worse in manoeuvring than SE.5a, its perfected derivation, so it has a couple more manoeuvres that are steep. In short, the new deck is a F deck with some more restriction. Hence the Fr name that Ares Games chose).
(Via Honza Andrea gives above Climb Rate/Max Alt for SE.5 which differ from unofficial stats of 3/11 respectively)

    Fokker Dr.I - D Deck
Strengths - Two 90 degree right turns, Short wide side-slip (steep), Fast climber, A guns
Weaknesses - Weak compared to contemporaries, Average speed,
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
Fairly robust with 13 damage points and a fast climber with a climb rate of 2 and ceiling of 14 - this is a nimble dog fighter but suffers greatly for its comparatively slow speed and low strength against the stronger, faster enemy aircraft it could come up against and no good in pursuit situations. Ideal machine for a pilot with suitable ace abilities.
    A Nexus & Ares Model. Series 1 2007; Deluxe Edition 2006 & Revised Deluxe Edition 2011; 1a (reprint) & Duel Pack released 2013 & reprint 1b 2019

    Pfalz D.III/D.IIIa - J Deck
Strength - Tough, good climber, A Guns
Weakness - No special manoeuvres, Average speed, (D.III - Unreachable machine guns if option played.)
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
This is a tough bird with 16 damage points and a climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 12 for both - it's another that suffers for having a comparatively low speed and no special manoeuvres but be creative and you may surprise a few !
It's toughness should keep you in the fight until the job's done.
    A Nexus Model. Series 4 released 2010 Series 4a (reprint) 2019

    Hanriot HD.1 - F Deck
Strengths - Robust, Fast, L&R 90 turns, L&R short wide side slips, Average climber, A guns
Weaknesses - Short wide side slips are steeps, B Gun variant
    Users - Entente (Belgians & Italians)16/Q3 to 18/Q4
This is a fast moving manoeuvrable aircraft that should be able to take on most Central Powers types on more than an even footing - it has 14 damage points, a climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14, tight turns each way and short wide side slips to help out in a dog fight - only slight downside is some were B guns !
An Ares Model. Series 6 released 2013

    Macchi M5 - Q Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, Good climber, L/R 90 degree turns, A Guns
Weaknesses - Tight turns are steep
    Users - Entente & Central Powers (Italian & Austro-Hungarians) 18/Q1 to 18/Q4
This flying boat is another tough kite with 15 damage points, it has a climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14 and the manoeuvrability to put up a decent fight - not as frail or as easy as it first looks - a pusher not a push over !
An Ares Model. Series 8 released 2015

    Aviatik D.I - Q Deck
Strengths - Robust, Fast, L/R 90 degree turns, Fast climber, A Guns
Weaknesses - Tight turns are steep, The B Gun variant
    Users - Central Powers - Austro-Hungarians 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
A good performer with 14 damage points, a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 14 and with a tight turn either way that can really help in a dogfight. It will need it up against the HD.1 & Camels over the Italian front !
An Ares Model. Series 6 released 2013

    Siemens Schuckert D.III - O Deck
Strengths - Robust, Fast, Two L/R 90 degree turns, L/R short wide side slips, Fast climber, A guns
Weaknesses - Short wide side slips are steep,
    Users - Central Powers 18/Q2 to 18/Q4
A fast, robust interceptor with 14 damage points, a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 17. Very manoeuvrable, the pairs of tight turns either way make this a nimble dog-fighter and one to be wary of.
An Ares Model. Series 6 released 2013

    Nieuport 28 - F Deck
Strengths - Robust, Fast, L&R 90 turns, L&R short wide side slips, Fast climber, A guns
Weaknesses - Short wide side slips are steeps.
Users - Entente (USAS mainly) 17/Q4 to 18/Q2
This is a fast moving, manoeuvrable, robust aircraft with 14 damage points, having a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 13, that should be able to take on most Central Powers types, its tight turns each way and short wide side slips will help greatly in dog fights.
An Ares Model. Series 8 released 2015

    Fokker D.VII- L Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, Fast climber, Short straight, Short turns, 90 degree turns left & right.
    Weakness - none
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
Arguably best German fighter of the war and the game; fast moving and tough with 16 damage points, a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 15. Some unique manoeuvres make this a tricky opponent in anybody's hands so treat with caution if you come up against them.
    An Ares & Nexus Model. Series 2 released 2007 & 2a (reprint) released 2014

    Fokker E.V - F Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, L&R 90 turns, L&R short wide side slips, Fast climber, A guns
Weaknesses - Short wide side slips are steep.
    Users - Central Powers 18/Q3 to 18/Q4
This is a fast, tough, manoeuvrable monoplane with 15 damage points and a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 14 that should be able to take on most Entente types on a fairly even footing, its tight turns each way and short wide side slips will help greatly in dog fights.
An Ares Model. Series 8 released 2015

    Sopwith Snipe - M Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, L&R 90 degree turns, Short wide side slips
Weakness - Wide side slips are 'steep' (But not in Ares model ?!)
    Users - Entente 18/Q2 to 18/Q4
A fast, tough, agile fighter with 16 damage points, a climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 13 and arguably the Ententes best. An improvement on the camel with 90 degree turns right and left, and the wide side slips, in a two to one right hand bias - an answer to match the dominance of the Fokker D.VII if you're tired of taking a beating !
    An Ares & Nexus Model. Series 2 released 2007 & 2a (reprint) released 2014

    Phönix D.I - X Deck
Strengths - Tough; A guns; Short Dive; Non steep stall
Weakness - Average Speed, No sharp turns, (Unreachable machine guns if option played.)
    Users - Central Powers (Austro-Hungarian) 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
This is a tough aircraft of average speed with 15 damage points, an average climb rate of 3 and a ceiling of 13. Special manoeuvres of a non steep stall and a short dive card will make it different from other types you may have played.
New optional rules/ace skills come with these models.
An Ares Model. Series 9 Aug 2016

    Sopwith 1½ Strutter 'Comic' - V Deck
Strengths - Robust, Immelmann turn, A guns
Weakness - Average speed, poor climber, fixed upward firing guns
    Users - Entente 16/Q3 to 18/Q4
This is a single seat version of the redoubtable two-seater - a robust aircraft with 14 damage points and average speed yet a reasonably agile type with an Immelmann turn counted amongst it's manoeuvre's, though its poor climb rate of 5 and ceiling of 11 let it down a little. Built to take on Zeppelins with upward firing guns for the Home Defence squadrons, so, load Buckingham rounds and hope for the best !
New optional rules/ace skills come with these models.
An Ares Model. Series 9 Aug 2016

These are the scouts, the fighters, buy them, fly them, love them !
Just remember, you can be as tactical as you like but if the cards don't fall for you...well, c'est le Guerre !

A Tactical Walk Through of Two-Seaters

No-one has asked but here are my thoughts on two-seaters anyway !

Most of the two-seater types are multi-role - recon, spotting, support, bomber, escort - and their use can be dependant on when, where or by whom they were employed during their career so you may need to do some research for scenario creation.

    Roland C.II - K Deck
Strengths - Average speed, Tough, fore & aft guns, 360 Rear gun arc at targets above* (See Andrea's comment below)
Weakness - Single gunned variant, No Immelmann, Rubbish climber
    Users - Central Powers 16/Q2 to 17/Q2
Although average speed in the general scheme of things this early war type was the fastest thing in the air in its day and coupled with its 15 damage points, and 'that rear gun', this can be one tough nut to crack when used in a historical context... or anytime in my experience ! Treat it with caution if up against it, use it as an escort fighter if not - its only weakness is it has a rubbish climb rate of 6 with a ceiling of 9 and some versions have no front gun.
    A Nexus & Ares Model Series 2 released 2007 & 2a (reprint) released 2014

    RAF RE8 - K Deck
Strengths - Average speed, Fairly Robust, fore & aft guns,
Weakness - Rubbish climber, No Immelmann
    Users - Entente 16/Q4 to 18/Q4
Much maligned by history this is a must have aircraft for your inventory if you want a victim !
The 'Harry Tate' was a mainstay for the British throughout much of the war, it's fairly robust with 13 damage points but has a rubbish climb rate of 6 and a ceiling of 10; suffers particularly in later war scenarios where the faster & stronger enemy aircraft can pretty much have their way with it !
    A Nexus & Ares Model -. Series 3 & 3a(Reprint) released 2017

    Rumpler C.IV C - K Deck
Strengths - Tough, Good climber, fore & aft guns,
Weakness - Average speed, No Immelmann
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q1 to 18/Q4
This is a tough aircraft with 15 damage points and a rate of climb of 5 with a ceiling of 11. The only thing that lets it down is its average speed but in game terms that's not a bad thing 'cos you can catch it !
    A Nexus Model. Series 4 released 2010 & series 4a (reprint) 2019

    Airco DH4 - H Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, Fast climber, fore & aft guns, Up-gunned variants
    Weakness - No Immelmann
    Users - Entente / US 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
This is a fast tough opponent with 15 damage points and an terrific climb rate of 2 with a ceiling of 15 that comes in a number of variants with different gun combinations fore and aft - historically it didn't need escorts, that should tell you all you need but if further hints required once you drop your eggs use it like a scout !
Ares give US variant a climb rate of 4 with a ceiling of 12 (different engine)
    A Nexus & Ares Model. Series 2 & 2a released 2014 (reprint)

    Breguet Br14 B2 - K Deck
Strengths - Beyond tough, Good climber, fore & aft guns, Up-gunned Variants
Weakness - Average speed, No Immelmann.
    Users - Entente / US. 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
This is a rudely tough opponent with 17 damage points and a good climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 12. It's another that comes in a number of variants with different gun combinations fore and aft so choose wisely; about the only thing that lets it down is its average speed but, again, in game terms that's not a bad thing 'cos you can catch it !
Ares give Br14 A2 variant a climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14
    A Nexus Model. Series 4 released 2010 & series 4a (reprint) 2019

    Breguet Br14 A2 - H Deck
Strengths - Beyond tough, Good climber, Fast speed, fore & aft guns, Up-gunned Variants
    Weakness - No Immelmann.
    Users - Entente / US. 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
This is a fast rudely tough opponent with 17 damage points and a good climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14. It's another that comes in a number of variants with different gun combinations fore and aft so choose wisely. This is the recon version of the B2 that is higher flying & quicker than that machine
An Ares Model. Series 4a & series 4a (reprint) 2019

    UFAG C.I - H Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, fore & aft guns
Weakness - Poor climber, No Immelmann.
    Users - AH 18/Q2 to 18/Q4
This is a fast, tough opponent with 16 damage points but suffers with a poor climb rate of 5 with a ceiling of 11. Its speed and toughness makes it hard to take on but it has no Immelmann so can be predictable. Don't underestimate it, it may just have B guns but that is usually enough !
    A Nexus & Ares Model -. Series 3 & 3a (Reprint) released 2017

    Halberstadt CL.II - V Deck
Strengths - Tough, Immelmann, fore & aft guns, 360 Rear gun arc at targets above.* (See Andrea's comment below)
Weakness - Average speed, Poor climber, B guns
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This is a tough type with 16 damage points and one of the few two-seaters that has the advantage of being able to perform the Immelmann turn. Put that to good use when you can as it can't out run the later British scouts or climb out of trouble with its poor climb rate of 5 and ceiling of 12 !
An Ares Model. Series 7 released 2014

    Bristol Fighter F2B - S Deck
Strengths - Tough, Fast, Good climber, Immelmann, up-gunned variants, fore & aft guns, 360 Rear gun arc at targets above.* (See Andrea's comment below)
    Weakness - No sharp turns
    Users - Entente 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
This is a fast, tough opponent with 16 damage points and a good climb rate of 3 with a ceiling of 14. It's another that can Immelmann and also comes in a number of variants with different gun combinations fore and aft so choose wisely. Not much lets it down and the clue is in its title - 'fighter' - use it as such and you won't go far wrong.
An Ares Model. Series 7 released 2014

    Hannover C.IIIa - W Deck
Strengths - Tough, Immelmann, L&R 90 deg turns, Smaller blind spot, fore & aft guns, 360 Rear gun arc at targets above.* (See Andrea's comment below)
Weakness - Average Speed, Slow climber, B Guns
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
This is a tough aircraft with 16 damage points yet a surprisingly agile type with left and right 90 degree and Immelmann turns - treat it with caution if attacking one or it will tear you a new one ! If you're piloting one use those moves to your full advantage to slip your attackers and let your gunner have his head.
Let down by its average speed (though good for the game) and its slow climb rate of 5; it has a ceiling of 16.
An Ares Model. Series 8 released 2015

*Andrea:- This is the rule I wrote in the next, still unpublished official supplement:
Roland C.II/C.IIa, Bristol F2B Fighter, Halberstadt CL.II, Hannover CL.IIIa - altitude and arc's of fire.
This rule can be used if the altitude rules are also in use.
These planes have higher rear machine guns that can be turned 360°: use the arc of fire on the card/base with the blind spot for targets at the same or lower altitude but their rear machine guns can ignore both the blind spot and the firing arc when firing at targets at higher altitude.
Hannover Cl.IIIa has also a reduced rear blind spot due to its special tail design: the blind spot is effective only against targets at lower altitude, while the sight to target at the same altitude is not blocked. This rule does not affect points cost."
It should be noted that these machines' rear guns also have a wider arc at targets on the same level, similar to that of the Roland C.II, ie anywhere but their machines front firing arc.

    Sopwith 1½ Strutter - V Deck
Strengths - Robust, Immelmann turn, fore & aft guns
Weakness - Average speed, poor climber
    Users - Entente 16/Q2 to 18/Q1
This is a robust aircraft with 14 damage points and average speed yet a reasonably agile type with an Immelmann turn counted amongst it's manoeuvre's but its poor climb rate of 5 and ceiling of 11 let it down a little. Still a must have type that saw much service and a good match against its earlier opponents.
New optional rules/ace skills come with these models.
An Ares Model. Series 9 released 2016

    Albatros C.III - Y Deck
Strengths - Robust, fore & aft guns. Sideslip longer than straight
Weakness - Slow, No Immelmann, Rubbish climber
    Users - Central Powers 15/Q4 to 17/Q1
This is a robust aircraft with 14 damage points but it is slow with a rubbish climb rate of 6 and ceiling of 8 that also let it down, however, it's another must have type that saw much service and is a good match against its earlier opponents which could do little better.
New optional rules/ace skills come with these models.
An Ares Model. Series 9 released 2016

These two-seater's are invaluable to making up interesting scenarios so if you don't have any - get some !

A Tactical Walk Through of Bombers

Now you'd think this would be straight forward - big, slow, hard to take down... not the case... crew numbers, gun numbers, exposed positions, gun tunnels, ventral positions, moving crew. Bombers have it all going on.
Tactical advice - mob them, don't try attacking on your own, you'll die trying !

    Gotha G.V - XD Deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, Gun tunnel & limited blind spot, Climb rate (good for bombers)
Weakness - 1 pilot, 2 engines; Very slow; 2 MG positions,
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This aircraft has total 3 crew, is uber tough with 27 points of damage; it's very slow, with a poor climb rate of 5 (both of which are actually good for a bomber) and it has a max altitude of 14. It may suffer for having one pilot, 'cos if he's taken out it's over, and having just two engines will mean three damages will take it out (1 or 2 damages are scored per engine hit). Having 2 MG's can be a weakness as if one goes down it can become very vulnerable - though the surviving gunner could be allowed to move between guns if all agree but they give good coverage so when attacking know that you will be taking hits and pray for zeroes or jams !
When playing altitude rules ignore the blind spot for targets at lower altitude as they can be engaged by the rear gunner via a tunnel through the aircraft's underside - an unpleasant surprise for those not familiar with this feature !
    An Ares Model. released 2012 & 2014

    Caproni Ca.3 - XD Deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, 2 pilots, 3 Engines, No rear blind spot,
Weakness - 2 MG positions, vulnerable rear gunner, Very Slow
    Users - Entente 16/Q3 to 18/Q4
This aircraft has a total crew of 4, is uber tough with 25 damage points but is very slow, has a climb rate of 6 and a max altitude of 11. The 2 pilots give it a distinct advantage as both need to be taken out to achieve a victory that way and having 3 engines adds a little robustness. 2 MG's can be a weakness as if one goes down it can become very vulnerable - though the surviving gunner could be allowed to move between guns if all agree but, again, they give good coverage so when attacking know that you will take hits and pray for zeroes or jams !
The rear gunner is on a 'higher gun platform'. A higher gun platform means a more exposed gunner but a better arc of fire. When altitude is played it uses the arcs for same or lower level targets but it has a 360 arc at targets at higher altitudes. The pay off is you must play the expanded crew damage rules that make the gunner more vulnerable.
    An Ares Model released 2012 & 2014

Handley Page O/400 - XB Deck
Strengths - Resoundingly Tough, 2 pilots, 2-3 gunners; Optional Armament of A guns.
Weakness - 2 Engines, Very Slow speed
    Users - Entente 17/Q2 to 18/Q4
This aircraft has a total crew of 4, or, 5, it's resoundingly tough with 30 damage points. It is sluggish in its movement as it uses the XB deck with its 30 degree turns but due to its larger base* it's a shade faster in speed than a Caproni with the XD deck so will be quicker than you think. It has a dreadful climb rate of 7 and max altitude of 7.
The 2 pilots do give it a distinct advantage, as both need to be taken out to achieve a victory that way, as does the gunner arrangement:
If not using altitude rules the rear gun has 2 gunners - it may fire only once per phase but both gunners must be taken out to silence it - a distinct advantage in defence.
When playing with altitude rules the HP has a dorsal and a ventral MG - Dorsal for targets at same level (outside the blind spot) and above; Ventral for targets below and in the blind spot. The 2 gunners can service either gun if their oppo is downed.
Another key advantage is Optional Armament: The Handley Page O/400 can be up-gunned to twin guns (A guns) in any of its gun positions - usually to a max of 5 guns - that would mean two positions can be up-gunned: front or rear (dorsal/ventral if using altitude). This may be scenario driven and affect the bomb load.
This can be a tough nut to crack so throw lots at it !
    An Ares Model. released 2016

Zeppelin Staaken R.VI - XA Deck
Strengths - Resoundingly Tough, 4 Engines, 5 MG positions, 2 pilots, 2 Mechanic/Gunners, 3 Gunners, No blind spot
Weakness - Very slow speed, dreadful climb rate
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This aircraft is truly a giant, it has a crew total of 7, or 8, is resoundingly tough with 34 points of damage tempered by its pedestrian movement as it uses the XA deck with its 30 degree turns but due to its larger base* it is only a shade slower in speed than a Gotha G.V with the XD deck; it has a dreadful climb rate of 8 and max altitude of 10.
2 pilots give it a distinct advantage, as both need to be taken out to achieve a victory that way as do the 4 engines which will take a lot to stop them and a further advantage is gained as it has the 2 Mechanic/Gunners who can try to fix engine damage on their side of the aircraft (but leave their guns to do so). When using Altitude rules their wing mounted MG positions have 360 arc of fire at higher targets (ignoring arcs on the card) and the rear MG positions have a 180 arc of fire at higher targets (base of arc is shown on card).
It bristles with MG - especially at the back - be prepared to take hits and plenty of them !
    An Ares Model. released 2016

    Take Note:
    * The bases of the HP O/400 & the Zeppelin Staaken are 8.1cm long as opposed to the other Giants & standard bases which are 6.8cm long. The Staaken with the XA deck has a speed of 2.0cm per move, the HP with the XB deck has a speed of 2.6cm per move which is in comparison with the other bombers that utilise the standard base length with XD deck giving them a speed of 2.3cm per move.

    Remember:
Red dots on the cards and base are used to mark the MG positions - one for each arc of fire.
To measure the range from gun to target with a specific MG use the corresponding red dot to measure from.

When an aircraft has suffered an amount of engine damage equal to its number of engines it must use a stall card each turn, when it suffers more then it is eliminated. It can suffer 1 or 2 damages per engine special damage card drawn

Climb rate increased by 1 when half or more engines are damaged.

Climb rate increased by 1 when fully loaded, penalty lost when half load dropped.

Bombs can be dropped as full or part loads.

Rules for the Giants are now available for download from Ares: http://www.aresgames.eu/18368

And in case anyone has one:

    Friedrichshafen G.III - XD deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, 3 MG positions (G.IIIa also has gun tunnel)
Weakness - 1 pilot; 2 engines; only 2 MG positions manned at a time !
    Users - Central Powers 17/Q3 to 18/Q4
This aircraft has a crew of 3, is similar to the Gotha, and is another uber tough machine with 25 damage points, very slow speed with a climb rate of 5 and a max altitude of 10. It may suffer for having one pilot and having just two engines will mean three damages will take it out (1 or 2 damages are scored per engine hit). Having 2 gunners can be a weakness as if one goes down it can become very vulnerable ! This aircraft has a front, rear & side MG - only rear or side can be fired after each movement phase not both as they are operated by the rear gunner - Tip: don't get into its right front quarter or you may receive two lots of love !
If you have a G.IIIa variant it has a gun tunnel so when playing altitude rules ignore the blind spot for targets at lower altitude as they can be engaged by the rear gunner via a tunnel through the aircraft's underside.

    Caproni Ca.4 - XA Deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, 2 pilots, 3 Engines, 3 MG positions + Optional Armament,
Weakness - Large Blind spot, Pedestrian speeds
    Users - Entente 17/Q4 to 18/Q4
With a crew total of 5 another uber tough aircraft with 28 points of damage hampered by a pedestrian speed and manoeuvre deck with a climb rate of 6 and a max altitude of 11. The 2 pilots and 3 engines give it an edge of robustness against loss from special damage but it has an almighty big blind spot right behind it that begs to be filled with ambitious scout pilots with lots of ammo to burn up !
Optional Armament: The Ca.4 front gun position can be up-gunned to twin guns (A gun) so might be worth avoiding a head on attack if you meet one !

    Felixstowe F.2A - XC deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, 4+1 MG positions, A gun in nose, 2 pilots, Higher gun platform option.
    Weakness - Sluggish, 2 engines
    Users - Entente 18/Q2 to 18/Q4
At the top end of the uber tough scale with 29 points of damage this is one sluggish flying boat with a dreadful climb rate of 7, a max altitude of 7 and a total crew of 6. Having 2 pilots give it a slight edge against that special damage but the 2 engines make it a little vulnerable to that special damage ... but it can land on water ! Having said that do not take this aircraft lightly. It is well armed with 5 gun positions (inc pilot!) so be warned - there's a good chance he will get 2 guns on you in a single phase and there's an A gun in the nose. Tip: Try to avoid his front left quarter... and his rear.
Player must select higher gun platform or not for the rear gunner before play. A higher gun platform means a more exposed gunner but a better arc of fire ie no blind spot when no altitude played; when altitude is played it has a 360 arc at higher targets and the blind spot only applies to lower targets ! The pay off is you must play the expanded crew damage rules that make the gunner more vulnerable.

    Curtiss H.16 - XC Deck
Strengths - Uber Tough, 2+1 MG positions, A gun in nose, 2 pilots
    Weakness - Sluggish, 2 engines,
    Users - Entente 18/Q3 to 18/Q4
At the top end of the uber tough scale with 29 points of damage this is another sluggish flying boat with a dreadful climb rate of 7, a max altitude of 9 and a crew of 4. Having 2 pilots give it a slight edge against that special damage but the 2 engines make it a little vulnerable to that special damage ... but it can land on water !
Well armed with 3 gun positions (inc pilot!) with an A gun in the nose . Tip: Try to avoid his front left quarter as A+B damage = a bad day at the office !

The above info has been gleaned from the WoW FotG rule set, The Unofficial Stats & Ares Climb Rates & Max Altitude Table.

    Balloons:

World War I was the high point for the military use of observation balloons, which were extensively deployed by both sides. Artillery had developed to the point where it was capable of engaging targets beyond the visual range of a ground-based observer. Positioning artillery observers on balloons, generally a few miles behind the front lines and at altitude, allowed them to see targets at greater range than they could on the ground. This allowed the artillery to take advantage of its increased range.
Spherical balloons were quickly replaced by more advanced types, known as kite balloons, which were aerodynamically shaped to be stable and able to operate in more extreme weather conditions. The Germans first developed the Parseval-Siegsfeld type balloon, and the French soon responded with the Caquot type.

    Parseval-Sigsfeld:
German Balloon; Max Altitude level 3; Uber Tough target with strength of 28
The Parseval-Sigsfeld balloon (nicknamed the Drachen by the Germans) was the main German balloon of WWI. Later in the war it was largely superseded by smaller balloons based on the smaller and more stable Caquot design. Although a German design, similar balloons were also used by the British, especially early in the war

    Caquot M:
French Balloon used by the allies; Max Altitude level 4; Uber Tough target with strength of 28
(Nexus Model - Ares releasing one in 2019 ?)

    Achthundert English AE 800:
German version of the above; Max Altitude level 4; Uber Tough target with strength of 28

    Avorio Prassone AP:
Italian Balloon; Max Altitude level 4; Uber Tough target with strength of 28

Balloons are hard to knock down ordinarily so make sure you use rockets and/or incendiaries on them to tip the balance your way.

Cards representing these balloons can be found in the WoW Burning Drachens set, which also provides the Max Alt information & WoW rules regarding AA, AAMG, trenches cards etc.
A Caquot/AE 800 WoW model was supplied by Nexus in the Balloon Busters expansion together with the WoW rules.
WoG Balloon rules are provided in the RAP (p29-30 & p.36) along with those for AA, AAMG, Trenches etc.
A WoG Balloon model release is expected in the future - no, we don't know when !

So there it is - until the next release.. Roll on Series 10 (Whenever that may be ?!)

    Six years and counting...

Somebody has done an enormous amount of work on this. Thankyou very much indeed flash! Both informative and very useful. As a relative newcomer to both the period and the game, I've been using Military Factory for the info on aircraft. But that obviously doesn't give the pros and cons of each regarding WGF. Your info is very helpful. Cheers.

An addition I’d like to see is for the two-seater would be the various roles it was used for as an aid for scenario design. Bombing, observation, escort, night fighter, home defense, ground attack, etc.

The thread is about the capability of the machines in game terms rather than their roles.
Most of the two-seater types are multi-role - recon, spotting, support, bomber, escort, in general terms - and their use can be dependant on when, where or by whom they were employed during their career.
Those terms are too general to be of use for scenario design and it's possibly too complex to specify precisely in this thread. (eg what may start out as a fighter escort when introduced may be reduced to a night bomber nearing obsolescence).
It's therefore up to the scenario designer to spend a little time to research particular machines to be used in a scenario.
Though I'd happily link a detailed document on the subject if one is ever produced.
