This is why I only do peg-to-peg.

Here's a picture of the Handley Pages cracked base. It is my sons HP we actually got it in a game tonite.

Did the HP with an Nieuport 28 against a Fokker E.V and Halberstadt.

The only plane left at the end was the 28

Happened once to one of my Bf.110 bases.

Not had this problem myself, but this could be because all my bases have the peg glued in and are then reinforced by having one of Keith's bases with the altitude dials glued on top. This also adds weight and thus more stability, plus being easier to handle.

Sorry is the HP front gunner stood up with his right arm in the air, or is it my eyes?

Front Gunner right arm definitely in the air ... Would be mildly amusing if a one-finger / two-finger salute was attached to this gesture.

Either that or the front gunner is doing I'm The King Of The World! Whilst behind him the pilot is thinking IT'S TWO ARMS SIDEWAYS DINGBAT!!!

Never had a base crack on me yet but I have got some which are loose on altitude pegs - the Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II is a particular offender sorry to say as it's one of my favourites. However I have had to put a marge in an altitude peg as well as a chamfer around the top ... Customising it for the Vulcan XH560.

Anyway, as far as these are concerned

Agreed. A great looking model. Too big and too expensive for me but I shall look forward to seeing one or two in a game at a show sometime. If I had one I'd paint in the wheels and bombs and remove the ladders, they could be replaced with etched brass N gauge model railway signal ladders if you were that bothered but I think the model looks better without that level of detail.

However, what's slightly odd is that they go to the trouble and expense of adding these totally implausible ladders. That trouble and expense could have gone elsewhere – painting the tyres perhaps. Either way I'm sure lots of folks will enjoy owning and playing with this behemoth. And there was me thinking the Bristol Fighter was a big model…

Tim never lose heart thinks and says me whose on a restricted budget due to being disabled. Christmas or Birthday Present? Either that or conscientiously set up a slush-fund and aim for the HP O/400 which is the smaller of the two Giants like I plan to.

My choice of retailer for my O/400 has yet to receive them - I am buying from AA to show my support for Keith and like I said before the way he is always there for us. So that cuts down a lot of worries about stocks running out before I can purchase etc.

Just never say never - and as mine is actually for display but being kept in a game-ready state when it arrives we could always share-operate it at a CON if the opportunity ever arises

    Tonx,
The way things are going your retailer being in the states is likely to receive his models before kickstarter backers like myself here in the UK and the rest of the world receive theirs. TBH a bit concerned over quality issues on these models going by the response from some guys who have received them in the states. Wrong plane missing rewards are just service complaints but one guy has reported that one complete wing on his Starken has not been glued down so the cracked base may not be down to just rough handling.

John, Thank you for your posting and I do hope seeing as I am after a HP O/400 for display purposes only that those like yourself who want these for gaming purposes receive them first. I'm really a WGS man at heart but I'm keeping my O/400 game-ready so if required it could be used at a CON etc.

I'm a little surprized / disturbed at your quality concerns: I missed the posting reporting the detached top wing completely. Had seen the wrong aircraft sent postings and of course the cracked stand. Again I hope this does not happen to any UK Members after the additional wait time we have all experienced.

Picked up a great tip from a Member in Florida the other day about using a blunt butter knife to extrapolate a like the Staaken from the iron jaws of it's packaging. Have you seen this posting by any chance?

The Gotha that I had was poorly glued and had to be repaired – it is a concern of mine on these larger aircraft but I suspect when seen over an entire production run the numbers of breakages will be relatively small. If I could find DVa and DVII with top wings that had come away I'd be very happy – a most useful feature for repainting.

The models go back together very easily with superglue so I wouldn't think it was the end of the world however, given the price of these super large planes I'd send it back. That then gives ARES the opportunity to get an idea of the scale of the problem and address with the factory if need be. I remember way back – the original Series two was released and the quality on many models was pretty poor but that was resolved.

This has been a bone of contention right from the days of Nexus John, and not seemingly solved by the opening of the European distribution center.
May I also take this opportunity to welcome you to the Drome, now that you have finally got your wheels down so to speak.
hope to hear more from you in the future.

I had some problems myself in the past - the worst case of bad gluing being the WW2 Fiat Cr42/Gloster Galadiator/Bf.110/Beaufighter series IMHO where I had more than one plane to fix. I always report anything to Ares so that they can check with the factory. In any case, I also use a little drop of superglue and everything goes ok.

Is that why you had problems keeping them in the air?
Or was it our superior Hun shooting?

  28. #178

    Thumbs up

Interesting as I have had no problems with detached wings with the Spad VII or my Beaufighters but I did have detached wings on Little's Triplane which Ares replaced.

I finally had some time to really go over the models for the Giants! There are a few trivial issues I suppose, but WOW these are outstanding additions to the game! Although, frightfully spends, these are well worth he money I handed over for the privilege of owning them! I tip my hat to you Ares! I am not sure I will want any of the other behemoths that are still unavailable in Model form, for multiple reasons that I won't get into here, but I am SO happy these were made!

Last Thursday, played a scenario with the Zepplin Staaken and a single Gotha, escorted by Richtovens two seater. All three were swarmed by at least 8 allied fighters, we lost the two seater but accounted for 6 allied fighters. I armed the Zepplin with 3 "A" damage MG's ,one in the bow and two for the stern gunners. The rear arcs were death zones for any fighter to fly into I took out 3 fighters that way, when you are targeting an aircraft at short range you can get up to 2 x " double A's (4 A cards) and 1 x double "B" card (2 B cards). That will really damage a single fighter. The front needs the "A" twin MG's , the single "B" is not much firepower. Though slow the Staaken can take a hell of a beating, I call it the B-17 of WW1
I lost 26 of 34 points and still flew on. The mechanics also fixed an engine as well. So if you want to bomb something big the Staaken is your go to plane. Next on the list a bombing mission with my 2 Handley Pages.

To deal with the Staaken, one needs a two-seater with twin guns aft, or single-seaters with twin guns; tactics are simple: "Get in front, and stay there". And since a Staaken moves like a moose in molasses....

Do not be deceived Chris - the Staaken movement arrows are short but due to the huge base they are faster than they look.

Yeah I agree with that. In our three club games so far we were all surprised how "quick" it moves due to the base size.

First game I ever played we were escorting a Staaken. May be part of the reason I bought into the game...that and a love for WWI planes. Not sure I will get one any time soon but my hobby store carries a few on the shelves.

As I was pursuing Ares' site and looking at both upcoming and out of stock products, I noticed all 4 of the Giants are now listed as sold out. Obviously, these are still likely available at both distribution and retail levels. However, if these are on your "want" list and you have been short of funds or procrastinating the purchase, now is the time to act. I bought a second set just for this very purpose in case I ever have any breakages, as I was fairly confident these would sell-out quickly. Anyway, you have been forewarned! This is good news - will you be stocking all four of the Giants please Keith?

A second set in case of breakages ... That has got me considering the same given how these will only be available once no doubt.

However my plan to move house to somewhere 9,445 nautical miles away within the next two years (ideally) has to be my first consideration - on paper the chance to own four KS and four non-KS Giants looks FAT!

Has anyone in the community heard anything about the Giants Kickstarter app that was supposed to be released with the miniatures. The last I heard a month ago from Ares was they were 'almost there' but all subsequent communication has been met with stony silence.

    Anyone have any current intel?
