Default Gentlemen, MAN YOUR PLANES! NHMGS Enfilade 2015 Convention Announcement!

The theme for this year is RAIDS.

The Raids theme covers games that are based on typically small-scale actions involving a strike force attempting to seize or destroy and objective and the defending forces that try to prevent it or that counterstrike against the raiders. Think WW2 commandos, a HYW chevauchée, Vikings visiting the neighbors... There will be a special award to the Best in Theme game for the convention.

As much fun as I've had the last two years, I will not likely make it to this one.

I'm working on it, but I can't do all the traveling for the two of us, going to my events alone. Unless I want to be alone...

There is Trumpeter Salute in Vancouver...

The Trumpeter Club in Metro Vancouver, BC are having their 42nd annual Trumpeter Salute convention. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and Trumpeter Salute is doing it in style with featured games of the Hundred Days campaign.

Trumpeter Salute will be March 27, 28, 29, 2015 at the Bonsor Community Centre in Burnaby, BC.

Twenty pages of scheduled games, but none for Wings of Glory!?! Darn. I can't do all the Con's in BC.

It's a little late notice but I'm putting on the WW1 Wings of Glory Tournament again this year. It's been a huge success in the past and I have high hopes for this year. Ares Games has been gracious enough to once again give us some prize support for Enfilade this year. See you there.

Due to scheduling conflicts I only had time to run 2 Wings of Glory events this year. Besides these there was only 1 other WoG event at Enfilade so the pickings were sparse. Every session instead had at least 2-3 Napoleonic games going on due to it being 200 years since Waterlou. The tournament this year was poorly attended and I only had 6 participants. Most were repeats from previous years. What they lacked in numbers though they made up in enthusiasm. I had everyone play 3 games round robin style with 3 player at the end battling for first place. In the end a young man named Kyle took the trophy. The next morning I hosted a learn to play session that attracted 3 players. We flew around for a couple games using WW1 planes. I gave one young boy his first ever airplane and you wouldn't believe his excitement. The other game was a King Kong scenario on Saturday that ran twice. It was well attended but as I was putting on a different event during that time period I don't have a lot of information on it. I do know they had fun. We gave away a lot of prize support from Ares games and most people went away happy. We also had a lot of younger players attend the events so that looks good for the future of the game.

    Doug,
Don't know whether to feel bad about that, or not. If I could have made it, I could have run the H.M.S. Glorious scenario. Sort of a Waterloo for the ship and her Captain?

People having fun playing WoG is always a good thing. Seeding the new crop is even better.

Maybe next year? The aftermath of "Bloody April" where the Allies retake the skies?

I was there, but didn't actually play an _WoG_ or _SoG_ -- I went looking for stuff I *don't* get to play. To that end, here's what I *did* do:

-- Successfully escorted home elements of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment with the 586th Fighter Regiment. (Did you know Sheer Blinding Rage can actually generate hit results? The poor blighter flying the FW-190 didn't -- that was my "get the GM to say 'I have never seen *that* before*' moment: Inflicting Catastrophic Damage on a hit.)

-- Led the American forces which stopped an invasion of Washington state by Japan. (They had three tanks -- one took a direct hit from a 75mm artillery piece; one died from a satchel-charge attack; the third was crippled by land mines. Their motorcycle/ bicycle unit was wiped out in the first volley. By the time they ground forward to my third line of defense, they were down to a platoon and a half of infantry... and that's when the US M3 tank entered the fray. Couple volleys of automatic-rifle fire later, they surrendered.)

-- Flew the Avenger bomber elements of an attack on a Japanese floatplane base. (I need to find out how that game turned out; it ran long and I had to go to my next game. I'm pretty-sure the US won, tho'; I'd scored something like 11 VP in hits on the ship targets, and the F4Fs had shot down at least two _Rufe_s; so even if the two damaged TBMs didn't survive, the US was still well-ahead on points.)

-- Finished second in a Late Model Stock Car race. (I consider it a victory as the kid who took first also managed to get *both* of the cards which allowed him extra deck draws, so he was using five cards when no one else had more than three.)

The only "failed" game was the Roman-chariot-racing event -- someone needs to tell the guy running it "a convention is not suitable ground for your continuing campaign; I don't appreciate making time for a game, only to be told when I get there 'you have zero chance of winning'". (The situation was exacerbated by the incompetence of the local fast-food place's employees, who managed to completely forget I was waiting on a dinner order -- "$15/hour" Over My Cold Dead Corpse....) Making the situation worse: There is only one way to Do Initiative In Racing Games Properly, and that is "front to back, inside to outside"; anything else is just wasting everyone's time (and when the idiot running the game decides to punish people for an initiative draw *he's* making...). Finally: Some of us cannot stand up for long periods, esp. when we've Missed Dinner (see previous), so not allowing chairs at the table is a No-Go; and the constant shouting in an already-deafeningly-loud room contributes nothing to the game save a splitting headache.

Besides that, it was a Good Con for me. (I considered buying some of Mr. Denberger's WW1 airplane models, but had no way to get them home intact, nor anywhere to store them.) Games were played; books and games were acquired; all is well.
