Default Official Nakajima Ki.27 "Nate" Painting Thread

I was a little surprised that there was not already a thread for the infamous "Nate", but here we go...

I recently finished 2 of these resin aircraft from Armaments In Miniature. I just thought that I would share them here and start a worthy thread. The Black and/or Red cowling denotes squadron leader's aircraft. The "Black Tail 76" served in Northern China from 1938 to 1940. I have no details for "Red Lightning Tail". The base color is Tamiya Acrylic Japanese Army Gray. Thanks for looking!

Here are 4 Nates of mine, just completed. AIM 1/200 models.
Not quite correct historical camo, but a sort of. Due to my sources, the "08" camo scheme was to leave the planes surfaces in silver/aluminium colour with some red or black (black tail - unit leader). Thus I painted them in silver, added decals and coated with matt varnish.

Hopefully, the red trimmed plane above will work for his second plane.

    [Edit: Redone with shading!]

The tail marking on Carl's planes are for the 2nd Chutai, 4th Centai, but that unit didn't camouflage their planes in the drawings I found. Whatever.

I just received my Nate's from AIM, as I was looking for aircraft details, I found the "lighting bolt" tail. I think that would be great to do. You did a outstanding job on yours.

My Nates. These are the first models I’ve painted in over 20 years! I wanted to try a bunch of different color schemes. Eventually, I’ll paint a couple more to make up a flight for a scenario. Any constructive criticism appreciated from the pros. I have a long hill to climb.

Bit of weathering/wear maybe but looks to me you're near the top of that long hill Dave.

I've seen (and flown) them in person and they are very nice. I like a smattering of weathered and newer sharper planes. Like Flash, I'd weather a couple for my taste but they look great as they are.

Thanks guys. I 100%agree some weathering would help. I was actually afraid to as I wasn’t very confident in how weathering would impact them. Now that I have some more planes done and have found a weathering technique I like, I’ll probably go back and put some wear on these. I appreciate the input and kind words.

Great job on those. Looks like many of us use MISCMNI decals. Those are all I use anymore.

    Very nice finish, Dave!

I shy away from weathering, worried I'll do too much and ruin the finish.
I've only done 6 WW2 repaints, and didn't weather any of them.

Shame those Hinomaru are slightly mis-registered, showing a tiny white arc around part of the edge of each one.
A handful of my MiscMini WW1 roundels have the same.
I use a wide variety of producers of decals, to avoid such nit-picks!
