Pipe cleaners are cheap - about a pound for a pack of 100 - just experiments with the different colours until you get the effect you like.

Just discovered this thread while searching for another.
    (a) very interested in BoB scenarios - will check that out (even though all I have at the moment are He111s and Me110s)
    (b) love your pipe cleaner effects - going to try and pick some up today!

I must say that for WW2 in particular the pipe cleaner option looks better. For WW1 I prefer the Oberst's flames and smoke.

Pipe cleaners work well with 1/700 scale planes too!

Max, great stuff and great thread - only just come across it for the first time.

I was once informed that Messerschmitt Bf 109Es which were based in Northern France were assumed to have a 'loiter time' of seven minutes over London. This was without any additional fuel tanks to weigh them down.

You could also do with watching the 1969 film 'The Battle of Britain' which was extremely well researched and is a good film anyway. There is something said about loiter time for a Messerschmitt 109 about a third of the way through ...

Stopped by Michael's and picked up several styles of pipe cleaners and a set of assorted acrylic paints to doctor them with.

Is that the HMS Repulse or HMS Prince of Wales under attack? I think both of those succumbed to air attacks in the Pacific Theatre even though PoW is more famously associated with the HMS Hood sinking in May 1941.

It's the Matchbox "USS Indianapolis", a 10,000 ton 'Treaty' heavy cruiser (so WAAAY smaller than "HMS Repulse" or "HMS Prince of Wales"!).
These two British capital ships were sunk on December 10th 1941, by twin-engined land-based Japanese bombers, Bettys and Nells.

The aircraft are a mixture of Tamiya and Fujimi carrier-bourne Zekes, Kates and Vals.

I built/painted these around 30 years ago, and rediscovered them 2 years ago, and played a few games. I have since produced some new ships and planes for further games.

I remember the Matchbox construction kit of the USS Indianapolis very well from the 1980s although it was one of their range of ships which I never bought / built. Matchbox only produced a few ship kits which were all 1/700 Scale and these varied from the Admiral Graf Spee to the more modern HMS Tiger - both of which I did buy and build when I was about twelve years old. I seem to remember Matchbox also producing a Narvik destroyer kit along with HMS Kelly (Lord Mountbatten's ship during WW2) which were also 1/700 Scale but I was never interested in their smaller ships just the bigger ones.

I think Matchbox ended up producing ten ship model kits in total but other than the ones I have mentioned and the USS Indianapolis I cannot remember what the others were ...

Thanks Tim - I knew the list was about ten or eleven ships long. Everything from destroyers to pocket battleships plus the mighty Bismark. I thought that HMS Tiger was the only modern era ship which Matchbox produced within their range - remember buying it as it came equipped with two helicopters for the large helipad towards the rear. Already had the Bismark in 1/700 Scale by Tamiya (1/700 Water Line Range) as given to me for my eleventh birthday by the time I discovered the Matchbox range of ships.

    I have:

    USS Indianapolis x 5 ( 1 built )
    USS San Diego x 4 ( 1 built )
    USS Fletcher x 7 ( 3 built )
    HMS Kelly x 9 ( 1 built )
    HMS Ariadne x 3
    HMS Exeter x 3 ( 1 built )
HMS Duke of York x 1
    HMS Tiger (modern-ish cruiser) NONE
    Z-38 "Narvik" class destroyer x 6 ( 1 built )
    Admiral Graf Spee x 2
    Bismarck x 1

They are mostly in storage along with around 400 Tamiya/Skywave/Pit Road/Fujimi/Hasegawa/Aoshima/Trumpeter/Midship Models/Skytrex unbuilt ships!
