    Default 1/200 scale Merit models!

Greetings Skysters! Whilst recovering I caught the mention again of the Merit models being made for the upcoming 1/200 scale carriers. Jaguar models of California are importing them and they are wonderful! Here are the B-25's compared to the Ares units:

The models are exquisitely rendered and come with decals for different squadrons

    B-25 fans

    SBD fans

    TBD fans

And Wildcat fans too! Though I have plenty already. At less than $5 per model they are a great deal and should suffice to equip my Hornet . . .

Couldn't remember if I'd ever followed up... starting to think that these might be a better bed than the official Ares version to do one for my Doolittle Raider neighbor.

Also thinking maybe the Doolittle one needs some marking correction...

I must get some of these!
Where in Europe are they being sold?
    The price is amazing.

Another way to buy these puppies is to order the whole Merit kit of the USS Hornet CV8. That gets you "free" 16 Mitchells plus a whole air wing (lots!) of F4F, SBD, and TBF. You can choose to display the Hornet in Doolittle raid form with the Mitchells on deck and I believe 6 Wildcats retained for air defense. Or you can cover the deck with USN types. Or build a second Hornet

144 Decal in the UK offers excellent 1/200 ALPS decal sheets for the Doolittle Raiders, including the individual reg numbers and markings for "Bat out of Hell" and the others which had personal markings. He is always on ebay.co.uk.

Can it be that Dave has not yet noticed the floatplane versions of the F4F, B-25, etc.? Maybe those are tomorrow's surprise?

Outstanding find Dave! Thanks for posting. I hadn't planned on getting any WWII models for a while but I might have to get one each of these. I wonder if Merit has any plans for an Akagi and her planes?

Ron, thanks for the source info on Raider decals. I hope this crazy plan works...

I wonder that too. As I dont have any Japanese plane, that would be a good start.

Definitely. However I do prefer shipment costs from U.S.A. to my place over those from Italy or France, which are simply crazy (doubled).

Actually, on further review the Ares model IS more accurately marked. Sorry to do a 180...

The letters "U. S. Army" were NEVER carried as top-side markings that I've been able to find any evidence of, and it was always "U.S" on lower starboard and "ARMY" on lower port.

Still look very good to me and the price is amazing.
Anyone found a U.K. distributor yet?

Just today I have received a parcel from Jaguar Models with the SBD-3 minis. They look perfect. Along with a decal sheet provided, must say it was a big deal.

Does anyone know of any Canadian retailers who stock this? With our dollar down like it is I was hoping to buy local. Of course I might just have to bite the bullet as it were and order a pack.

I pick up one of each pack when I was in the USA last month.

great models will look good along side Ares

Can anyone put some pictures in this thread showing the undersides of the Merit 1:200 models, please?

As no-one responded to my request, I bought some F4F Wildcat models to find out the answer for myself. As you can see, the wheel wells have not been painted on the noses of the aircraft, so to convert them for use in Wings of Glory, in addition to cutting off the wheels, I suppose that we ought to paint two black circles with smaller grey circles inside to represent the retracted wheels.

I just got my hands on a bunch of the Merit USN aircraft. The wheels on the F4F's are the only real problem with those models (I think I need to draw up some wheel decals to fix that).

However, some of my SBD's came with their engine cowlings misaligned. One was glued on upside down! Being a very brittle plastic (think clear canopy brittle), prising off one to see if it is fixable left me with a very sad-looking dive bomber. A pity, because the overall shape, detail and price can't be beat in this scale.

Was also disappointed that neither the SBD's nor TBD's come with any ordinance. Still, I can easily sculpt some digital models for torps and bombs, and Shapeways 'em.

They come with pretty good decals, but I think I might draw up my own for my Coral Sea forces.

Columbia Aerodrome (jbmacek here on the 'Drome) has Mk.13 torps with and without nosecaps.

Just noticed Trumpeter models has released a few new ships in 1/200 scale, one of which features a Walrus seaplane . . . since the Merit models were produced in conjunction with the Hornet, I was wondering if . . .

    Hi David,

Unless you play your games from underneath a glass table no one is going to notice anything about the undercarriage.

the trumpeter catalogue for 2018 lists the following 1/200 planes:
    04201: OS2U-1 Kingfisher
    04203: Arado AR196
04204: B-25 Mitchell (I guess they are the Merit ones ...)
    04205: F4F Wildcat (- " -)
    04206: TBD Devastator (- " -)
    04207: SBD Dauntless (- " -)
    04208: Supermarine Walrus

    cheers,

Sadly, everything other than the Walrus has been Hannant’s ‘future releases’ for the last 2 years, so I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for the shagbat to come any time soon....

I don’t think any of them have been released separately yet. The only suggestion I have at present is to buy the kit of HMS Rodney, keep the 2 Walrus included and bin the ship bits. Mind you, that does mean that each Walrus will set you back 140 squids
