A few friends and I modified Circus Maximus back in the mid '80s so that all moves were done in pulses. We had a magnetic board with each player and a grid that broke down the planned move into segments. We drew cards to get the order of play for each turn. Made it much more fun and realistic at the same time. No more jerky moves with a chariot screaming up and hitting you. You actually felt it when you were run into the wall gradually.

I remember doing something with Gladiator as well, for similar reasons - but can't remember what it was, and didn't write it down ...

    My favourite 3:
    Squad Leader: Cross of Iron
    Richtofen's War
    Micro-Armor
    (my custom rules)

The modified Circus Maximus gets Honorable Mention. Got a lot of play value and fun out of that, although technically not a War Game

For "Beer & Pretzels" games I liked Axis and Allies and Shogun, although both of those needed a full complement of players to work properly.

That was the most disappointing game I ever bought. I was so looking forward to it and was not impressed by the plain board and umpteen D6 rolls needed for every turn.

I am trying to picture this - must have been fun! Very similar idea to whenever I am playing a German aircraft type in Glory WW2 / WGS I always speak German ... Then have to translate for the Wife if I am playing her though she is picking up the basics.

Idea was inspired by the 1969 film 'Battle of Britain' ... Gibt es eine Spitfiregeschwader! (Give me a squadron of Spitfires!)

I own the game, read the rules and hope to get my group playing this very soon. I love your idea Tim, we used to practise this kind of talking when game theme allows.

Wow. You actually played that? I only managed to set it up and read the rules a few times. I did play Ney vs. Wellington with a friend once (for a turn or two), but I couldn't convince anyone to actually play through either game ever.

    My three (not including WoW):

Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign (Avalon Hill version)
    Guns of Gettysburg (Mercury Games)
    Storm over Arnhem (Avalon Hill)

    Runner up:

    Jena (International Team)

    Hi Max
Yes I played the whole battle, a couple of times, both ended up with French Victories, oxnce played the rules quite easy.
Played Ney v Wellington a few times, enjoyed both games.
Preferred Clash of Arms La Bataillle d'QuatreBras though

For playing afrer a few beverages, try SPI Russian Civil War, always good for a laugh with Russian outragous accents and also played the original Kingmaker on a balcony in Cyprus with roommates guzzling Bellapais and kebabs, great game

-Axis and Allies (any version except Battle of the Bulge, don't own that)
-Memoir '44 with the Eastern Front expansion
    -Stratego
    -Conquest of the Empire

I know...I know... 4 picks, but I really couldn't leave one out. Too many good games!

By farr the best boarrd game Iy be playin' when Iym drunk be Top Shed ... Which is a board game based upon the GWR (Great Western Railway) as produced by Dobenco circa 1986.

Although not a wargame or conflict-based boardgame Top Shed if Monopoly prepares you for entry into the property market is the equivalent to railway operations. Many who know me know of my closet interest in railways particularly of the 1980s but this game is based on the Great Western Railway during the steam age ...

One game of Top Shed stands out in my mind from 2009 back in the days before I stopped drinking: What one has to bear in mind is that the Great Western ran from it's London terminus at Paddington to Fishguard in South Wales going one way and Penzance down in Cornwall going the other. Line divides at Stoke Gifford now better known as Bristol Parkway Station. To put it mildly everyone playing including myself was at least three sheets to the wind that night! Also unlike Penzance Dobenco missed Fishguard off the Top Shed map.

Anyway as the four of us got playing as we approached London Paddington everybody spoke like we normally do but running in the other direction ... Aye it be bout Bristol when it were first noticed. Gettin worse by Exeter an even worse by Plymouth! By the time ye get crossin the bridge at Saltash an runnin past 'druth into PZ (Penzance) everybody had gained the most outlandishly funny 'Ooh Arr Bugger' West Country accents!!! Only to slowly lose them again as trains returned eastward up the GWR to London Paddington (normal accents in use but by which time all of us were ROFLOAO at what had taken place at the opposite end of the line. On the westbound journey down from London Paddington - same again and this went on for two hours.

So yes I agree that there are some games which are played when one is a little bit tipsy! However IMHO Wings of Glory for me is definitely not on my list of such games. Totopoly is another good one though
