Thread: Shapeways does X-Wing

  1. #1

    Default Shapeways does X-Wing

I fear my particular interest in X-Wing just took a turn for the worse (for worse, read expensive). Looking for 1/200 aircraft I've found one guy on Shapeways doing all sorts of 1/270 ships for X-Wing, and there are links to a pdf with the ship cards and movement dials for each one.

So, for those interested in X-Wing, hide your credit card and go here:

    http://www.shapeways.com/shops/mel_m...&section=Ships

In particular, I like this one (but not the price )

To me it seems that 3D Printed miniatures tend to be very grainy and pitted. For anyone who has actually bought some 3D Printed miniatures is that your observation?

Yes, the affordable material (ie. White Strong and Flexible in Shapeways parlance) is laser sintered nylon, so is tiny spheres melted together, giving a grainy surface. With enough coats of paint and varnish, it can be smoothed to an acceptable level, but if the model has very fine details, they'll likely be lost in the process.

Oh. This will be very bad for my budget. Mel, however, has a ship for which I have been searching. The Landing Craft transport based on the Lambda Shuttle. It is listed in Testing and is very expensive...but...oh...my precious!

It'll be interesting to see if it changes now that Disney has the property, but Lucasfilm was always surprisingly tolerant of garage industry kits and suchlike - plenty of producers were "known" to them, but as long as they avoided trademarks and generally kept a low profile, cease and desist letters did not ensue....

Get 'em while you can then. Interestingly he seems to remove ships from sale when they are produced by Fantasy Flight Games.

I'd be very surprised if so, but not competing with official products is a good way of avoiding ****ing them off basically - Lucas always had a pretty supportive attitude to "fan made" stuff, and so far at least, Disney doesn't seem to have changed that. Pulling items from sale when an official one comes out is a pretty common sense way of emphasising that you're supporting the official line, not competing with it, and minimising the risk of someone deciding you've crossed the threshold for getting the lawyers set on you....

If he's removing the items FFG is offering to avoid competition he seems to really know what he is doing. I had to deal with a case of copyright infringement of one of my own works not long ago. Its really a unpleasant thing to see your own creation being ripped off (and it was pretty crudley done too). I'm glad it got resolved pretty quickly but I am pretty sensitive on that topic now and it leaves a bad taste for me when someone makes easy money with the creations of somebody else.

As for star wars: I guess it won't hurt disney really badly - and a good part of the designs are already years and decades old. Companies like FFG which buy licenses for lots of money on the other hand are surely more touchy.

I'm a huge X-wing fan and actually when someone make an infringement they are very keen to assist the person in making their product work. A classic example are the online Squadron builders and gaming aids that you can get. Some of the earlier versions would just have scans of the cards and FFG basically had to step in a ask them to stop but also informed them how to work around the issue.

Also with Star Wars you have the EU (Extended Universe) and many of the Ships and characters were not under license with Lucas. As for the Shapeways designer working for FFG, it's more than likely, its a very good way of R&D a product before sending it off for mass production in China, also its known within the X-Wing community of one of the staff producing a Death Star title map system independently which is their own work around the Lucas agreement for producing miniatures games, as FFG are not allowed to make Star Wars "Board Games".

As for buying Shapeways X-Wing miniatures......... I build my own.

These are FUD and have a very good finish. I foresee more of my hard-earned going in this direction in the future. Despite some fairly delicate bits and pieces, Shapeways managed not to break anything off.

Yesterday I had a customer who asked about this model (if it was in stock), after explaining about 3d printing he got the whole point of printing on demand.
This morning I noticed he ordered the model, I'm sure he'll love it!

Hey Im the Mel from Mel Miniatures. I found out this thread googling me. I remember your order Gunner, I thought it was one of the weirdest orders Ive ever had. Who buys two Old Republic ships and a ship from the Shadows of the Empire comic that doesnt even have a name?

    Answering some of your questions:
No, im not from FFG (I wish, I would be earning a sallary)

And No, I can cofirm I have no idea what im doing. I started this around february 2013 and it has been growing since. The thing about taking those ships out of the shop is common sense. I dont even know if FFG is aware of me or angry at me. I know some guys from the spanish distributor and they love my work (although the guys at the official spanish forum dont like me posting stuff)

That is one awesome picture Gunner, I cant wait to see those painted. Mitchell Jetten, I also had that customer asking me the same question I can post pictures of my Nebulon B Frigate as soon as it arrives next week.

Hi Mel, welcome to the site.

That's some excellent work you are doing there, long may it continue. Thanks for putting us straight as to your status regarding FFG. I bought those ones just to see what they were like, and they were being sold as a set, so that's why I ended up with a "wierd" selection. The people I play with are not into Star Wars all that much, so don't mind what they chase each other round the table with.
