Thread: Epiphany!!!

  1. #1

    Default Epiphany!!!

During the train voyage to the North of portugal I've drawn this.
Sorry for the bad quality of the photo.
    Holidays makes wonders.
Diceless universal solo table for WW2.
Take a random card from one of the chosen for each quadrant, take random speed chit and it's done.
    Gotta go!

Nice does this just incorporate decks A to C? How practical is it for the random pick?

    This incorporates all decks, Neil.
This sheet needs further explaining. As soon as I get back I'll do that.

Nice. Time for me to start playing WW2!

    Looks intriguing Quim.
Should move things along much faster once we get used to it.

I think it does, Rob. I'll try it as soon as I get back.
The interior circle is for player planes closing and at 1 or less ruler.
The middle circle is for planes closing and at more than 1 ruler.
The outer circle is for planes moving away.

    The sequence is:
See what kind of pilot the AI is (this is one thing I've always fought with, the AI pilot quality and I think that this is a easy and quicky way to create diversity).
Find the correct quadrant and take the correct cards for the AI plane deck. Shuffle them and draw one randomly. That will be the AI plane movement.
If that card has two speeds see what kind of speed draw is used in that quadrant. Take that many chits and draw one randomly.
    The maneuvre is done.

Some decks don't have some maneuvres or have specific ones. If that's the case use the best maneuvre that plane's got.

The AI type of pilots are:

Rookie: Moves first and then player chooses is planes second maneuvre. Will react to nearest plane always.
Standard: Uses tables normally. Will use tables against the plane that fired against previously.
Veteran: 1st special damage ignored or last normal damage that would kill the plane. Will target always the same plane.
Ace: 1st special damage ignored or last normal damage that would kill the plane. Will target always the same plane unless it has enemy planes in quadrants 5-8 at close range.

    Hi Joaquim,

Outstanding effort. Please continue to keep us updated on the progress of this project.

    Thank you.

    Thumbs up

    This looks really exciting 'quim.
I will look forward to seeing the final result!

    Here it is.
I've played my last two games with these rules and they played better, with more verve and with different types of pilots than with the previous charts.
I might have taken a longer time to play, but I think that with experience I'll be able to reduce the time to less than I've spent with the previous charts.
Gentlemen, if you have any question do say so.
I've uploaded a PDF file to the files - waiting moderation queue.
If one of the digital wizards wants to help me with a better looking chart, I'm happy to accept.

What is better skill? I'd take a hack at this with Illustrator, and PDF it. What would you do, Peter?

I think that pages 2 and 3 can be joined in one. It would be a 1 sheet solo rules.

Going to try this soon to see how they work. Perhaps play it as a rough diagram until more have used it then you could amend if needed from feedback?

I'm sure your hack at this in Illustrator would be better than mine. I did the 2nd generation charts in b&w with a program I use for work. It is for electronic schematics but I use it for all
    sorts of basic drawings.

Starting to put this together. I'm trying to keep it within the smallest dimensions of either of the European A4 and US 8.5x11" formats, so any printer will keep it on a page.

    This needs to be "designed".

    Joaquim,
I am noting some attempts to reduce confusion on your diagram, but things are getting lost in translation.

You have different symbols for the different turns.

In Outer 2 (More than one ruler away):
    Straight
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
    Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

In Outer 2 (Less than one ruler away):
    Stall
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
    Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

    Inner 2:
    1st Yellow box:
    Straight
    Straight
    Left Sharp Turn (90 degrees?)

    Stall
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
    2nd Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

    Right side of box:
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)

    Inner 3:
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
    Right Sharp Turn (90 degrees?)

    Inner 5:
    1st Yellow Box:
    Straight
    Straight
    Reversal (Immelmann?)
Note: Inner 1 - I tried to make an Immelmann reverse arrow, but it needs work to be more recognizable.

    lower half of Inner 5:
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?) but with asterisk?
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)
    2nd Yellow Box:
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)

    Inner 6:
    1st Yellow Box:
    Straight
    Reversal (Immelmann?)

    lower half of Inner 6:
    Straight, but with asterisk?
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
    2nd Yellow Box:
Right Long Slow Turn (60 degree?)
Right Short Slow Turn (30 degree?)

So before I get too far down the garden path, please ensure I'm not messing up too badly. We may need to do up specific symbols (as you were doing, but I may be wrecking), and a legend for people to be clear about what is supposed to happen.

    Mike:

Turns are either long or short (High and low speed is decided by using the chits).
Turns are either 60ş or 90ş.
The long 60ş turns have a small slash below and are wider than the short 60ş turns.

The A, B and C inside circles indicate what kind and number of speed chits are used.

A (inside a light green circle) means you choose randomly between a slow and a fast speed chit. 50/50
B (inside a blue circle) means you choose randomly between two slow and one fast speed chits. 66/33
C (inside light grey circle) means you choose randomly between one slow and two fast speed chits. 33/66

Orange boxes are special maneuvres. They are used first to determine if the plane will make a special maneuvre. If a straight is picked, the player will use the normal maneuvres. If the reverse or in certain cases the turn is picked the player will proceed to the special maneuvres and the AI plane will make a pre-set sequence of maneuvres that normally means a more aggressive change of facing.

Yellow boxes are maneuvres that some decks have. If the deck has a 90ş or shallow slip, the player will use that maneuvre. If the deck doesn't have that maneuvre, the player will use the other (not so maneuverable) maneuvre.

    In Outer 2 (Moving away):
    Straight
    Right Long Turn (60 degree)
    Right Long Turn (60 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
    Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

In Middle 2 (Closing more than one ruler away):
    Stall
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
    Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

Inner 2 (Closing less than 1 ruler):
    Orange box:
    Straight
    Straight
Left Long Turn (60 degrees w/ asterisk)

    Stall
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
Right Short Turn (60 degree) - Right side of box: you can put this turn next to the other similar turn. It was just a mistake I did.
    Right Long Turn (60 degree)
    Yellow Box:
    Right Shallow Side-slip
    Right Steep Side-slip

Inner 3 (Closing less than 1 ruler):
    Right Long Turn (60 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
Right Sharp Turn (90 degrees w/ little circle)

Inner 5 (Closing less than 1 ruler):
    Orange Box:
    Straight
    Straight
    Reversal (Immelmann) w/ asterisk
Note: Inner 1 - I tried to make an Immelmann reverse arrow, but it needs work to be more recognizable. Okay!

Right Long Turn (60 degree) with asterisk
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)
    Yellow Box:
    Sharp Turn (90 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)

Inner 6 (Closing less than 1 ruler):
    Orange Box:
    Straight
    Reversal (Immelmann w/ small circle)

    Straight with asterisk
    Right Long Turn (60 degree)
    Yellow Box:
    Sharp Turn (90 degree)
    Right Short Turn (60 degree)

    Thanks.

Beautiful, Mike. This is just it!
    I found some typos:
Outer 10 has a straight that shouldn't be there.
Middle and Outer 9 have a mistake. They should be the inverse of 4.

    Thanks again!

Hope it is OK that I put the Aerodrome logo on it. Keith might ask that it be removed, too, even if you are OK with it.

We'll see. Thanks for the practice at Illustrator.

Once we are pretty sure it is finalized, I can PDF it and put it in the files.

Having printed it off in all it's glorious colour a question:

    1. Inside the 'wheel' I see direction arrows in green and orange rectangles. I can see where the green relates to the two boxes at the bottom of the chart (poutside the wheel) but what does the orange refer to? (Yhe other four boxes at bottom centre/right or those on the bottom left?)
