Default Mediterranean Theatre - Chapter 1: Training for Real

This is A BOB / Malta Generic Scenario - Fighter Attrition Strategy

    June 6, 1940

    Dear Brother:

I've just received your letters from May 21 and 23. I hope that since those days everything is alright with you. I'm glad that you got back from France in one piece. We are stationed in a small airfield while the eagle goes through its final repairs. We'll go back to the Mediterranean after that. We've received ten American naval fighters for evaluation. Today we were training gunnery fire with the heavy machine guns when we were surprised by two long range German fighters in an area we thought it was safe. Two of my pilots were out of ammo and the third one had less than half. I was fully armed but they catch us from behind. It was just by luck that PO Daniel Prague saw them.

"Evade! Evade! Bandits at six! Bandits at six!"

"What are they doing here?!" "Keep calm, Steve. Let's move around them. Good call, Daniel, you might just have saved us all." "Thanks, Squadron Leader. One thing..."

"Yes, Daniel?" "I'm out of ammo..." "So am I." "I've still have some..." "Damn! Daniel and Steve! Disengage and go home. Sven, stay with me and help me cover their retreat..." "Roger, sir."

"Taking damage, sir..." "Keep turning Daniel, I'll be over him in no time."

"Watch their frontal weapons. They have a real arsenal in there, Sven..." "Roger, sir."

"I've been hit. They pack a real heavy punch." "Let's give the boys time to escape and then well be moving on too..."

"Sven! I'll take yours, you take mine." "Yes sir."

"Sven! He made a reverse! Never thought that they could! He's on your six!"

"Moving away here, sir! You can start disengaging at your will..." "Not at my will for certain... They're fast..."

    "Same here, sir..."

    "The gunner hit me..."

"I can't shake him, sir. He's faster than me..." "I'll try to scare him off... Make a tight turn."

"Taking more damage... This fighter is a tank..."

"I hit him in an engine!" "Thank you sir!"

"I'm going for a loop. Move away from the other one-ten!" "I can't sir, I still have the other behind me!"

"He got me again!" "Make a tight turn!"

"More tight and I'll be between them!"

"I can't take much more damage, sir..." "I'm moving in."

"I've damaged this one!" "Well done, Sven!" "No more ammo..."

"Buggers! Move away, then!" "Yes sir!"

"I lost my tail! Going down sir!" "Jump Sven!! Mayday! Mayday! Pilot down! I repeat, pilot down! I need sea recover."

"This is Squadron leader Kinnison! Mayday! Mayday! Pilot down! I repeat, pilot down! I need sea recover. We're at five-one, four two north by five four-three west."

"Squadron Leader Kinnison, this is tower, we've heard loud and clear. We're sending a duck..." "Thanks Tower. Beware with bandits in the area."

"This is tower. How are you doing, Squadron Leader? How many are they" "They're two. I've got one in my cross-hairs." "Keep us updated, Squadron Leader."

"I've got one. His wing broke. he's going down."

"Well done, Squadron leader." "Tower! I hope you've sent a big duck. There's two parachutes opened below me."

"The duck has four engines, Squadron Leader. And the other bandit?"

"His gunner just fired at me..."

    "I think he's retreating..."

"I'll wait for the duck!" "It'll be there in fifteen minutes, sir..."

    In this Mission:

    Mixed Flight
Sqn Ldr Nicolau Lisbon - Sniper + Evasion - Martlet (Ace) (4 Kills - 1 kill in this mission)
PO Sven Zindorf - Martlet (Veteran) (1D6 ammunition)
PO Daniel Prague - Martlet (Standard) (No ammunition)
PO Steve Laindon - Martlet (Standard) (No ammunition)

    Special rules:
    Angling Shots - All shots that don't enter the enemy plane in its rear arc and front arc are always long range shots;
    All close range shots that enter the enemy's plane rear arc at close range add an A damage chit;
All close range shots that enter the enemy's plane frontal arc suffer reduction. All B, C and D chits become A chits instead.
These rules adds to the extra A damage chit for continuous fire (i.e. firing against the same enemy plane for consecutive turns).
Example: A ki-43 is firing for the second consecutive time against a P-40 in the P-40 rear arc at close range. It would make AAB damage.

PO Zindorf was already starting a banking roll to his left when the canon shells ripped through his tail section. Gazing back he knew the tail was gone. The Martlet went into a flat spin. Sven knew he had seconds to get out before the weight of the nose turned the flat spin into a deadly nose spin. A spin he knew he could not bail out from. He rattled off a quick ' Bailing out now...', slid the canopy back, stood up and as the nose went down executed a near perfect forward roll out of the aircraft. Waiting until his aircraft had spun past him he fell a while before pulling the toggle to deploy his chute. SNAP. He looked up checked the canopy was ok and observed the fight above and off to his left. He saw the Sqn Leader down the Hun 110 and gave chase whilst the second headed for home. Sven was glad to see the Co's plane coming back. He circled until a small black speck in the distance grew larger and the Sunderland Flying Boat landed next to him. It wasn't long before the was on board and having a cup of tea generously laced with rum. He assisted the crew as the Sunderland taxied across and picked up the two German crew of the downed 110. Sqn Leader Libon gave the pilot of the Sunderland a thumbs up and told him over the RT 'I'll escort you back. Once your safe I'll head off'. The Sunderland skipper answered 'Roger. Your chick and two hawks safely on board'. 'Roger, WILCO, OUT' He replied.
