PO Lee Bromley struggled to control his stricken aircraft. Knowing he was unable to bail out he fought valiantly to keep the Gladiator straight and level as he lost height. Disaster struck as he blacked out just before his aircraft would have landed safely on the wave tops. The Gladiator side slipped left as his grasp on the stick released and the Gladiator cartwheeled into the sea. Fortunately Bromley was thrown clear. Two hours later he was picked up by a launch from the Birmingham, alive. The MO's diagnosis was not good. If only he could have been got back to England there might have been a chance. But his injuries were to severe and for PO Bromley his flying days were over.

    "He's coming round skipper".
"Nasty bump there, now take it easy. We saw you come down, you left it way late to open your chute.."
"Yes, I got snagged up in the cockpit when the wing came off. Damn release was twisted. Hadn't realised I fell so far. Chute opens then wallop I hit the ground".
"Well thanks to you and your wingman the other bomber got away and your man bagged two Huns and chased the other two off".
"How long have we been here?"
"Best part of a day and a night. Look we'll have to move sharpish we've noticed that Jerry is close. There has been a lot of noise just over that way but we've not been seen".
"Let's have a look, never know what we'll find".
Without further to do Flight Leader Lt. Christopher Gitfast stood up and walked in the direction indicated. The three Blenheim crew followed on bemused.
"Well, well , well. Look at that" Lt. Christopher Gitfast said as he peered through the bush at the edge of the wood. The others crept up and observed what could only be a forward airfield set up by the Germans.
"Now, that's interesting..can you fly that?"
"Well, I think I could. I had a spell attached to Lufthansa before the war and I had the chance to fly a passenger variant." The Blenheim pilot replied.
"OK it looks like its unattended and know one's around, lets go....now".
The 4 men ran like the wind and clambered aboard. The Blenheim pilot quickly got his bearings and fired up the two engines, was taxiing and taking off before anyone on the ground could react.
"Now, Sparks, be a good chap and dial up the squadron frequency and get some chap to acknowledge we're flying in a German Heinkel and will attempt to land before they shoot us down!"
    "WILCO Skip".
90 minutes later the Heinkel landed at the RAF Blenheim airfield. Lt. Christopher Gitfast bade his farewells and was given a lift to his squadron base not far away.

(as the dice roller came up double 6 I thought he deserved a bit of good fortune)

    Quinn Mikeyung:
"Quinn keep your wing up, your coming in heavy"
"Hai, Fuchida san, this aircraft is flying like a sampan in a Typhoon"
"Up Quinn up, is he ok? Is he OK?" Fuchida was shouting into the radio as he watched the undercarriage of the zero collapse and it careered about Ryujo's deck before coming to a stop.. As he flew past he could see Quinn getting out of the zero limping slightly, clasping his hands above his head and waving them together.
"Bishamon was looking after you today brave warrior" He said to himself. Th deck was cleared for his landing on his next pass. Before long he was in the infirmary talking to Quinn.
"Well, don't you get ideas into your head for some time off. You've pranged a valuable aircraft but lucky for you it can be repaired. The MO tells me you need a day to rest! Pah. You get your day. It will take two to repair your zero. You may think on this as you clean up the Officers mess whilst we fly for the Emperor. The you may ask to join us and I might let you."
Young Quinn thought he was being badly done to however..."and well done on your second kill, but that does not mean you get off with cleaning the mess!"
With that Fuchida left him alone.

Jim knew the Hurricane was in a bad way. He hoped young Jenkins made it home. Jim knew he had seconds, the Hurricane was in terrible spin and he had to get out of the cockpit or he would black out and die. The canopy flew away and he climbed out of his seat. His leg throbbed from the bullet that had smashed its way through the side of the cockpit and lodged in his right leg. The more he stood up the more he was forced back into the cockpit by the force of the spin. Forcing one leg out of the cockpit he reached down and pulled the stick towards him. The sudden ease of pressure flung him out of the cockpit and the last thing he remembered before loosing consciousness was pulling the rip cord. Jim awoke flat on his back. A voice, distant, faint but clear said "steady mate, you've taken a bashing. You've got a bullet in the leg and a nasty gash on your forehead." "Where am I" Jim replied weakly ?" "On board a rescue boat. Lucky for you we were in the area. We've already picked up 3 others and were heading home when the skipper spotted you coming down. Be home in a couple of hours, you'll be flying soon". "Did, did the other Hurri make it?" "Yes, he showed them Huns the tail between his legs. He made it". Jim smiled then fell asleep.

    Malta: End of June
Sqn Ldr Martin realised his battered Gladiator would need careful coaxing in to land safely. As he approached Hal Far he could see the 'stringbags' had landed safely. 'Good', he thought. 'Now to see if he could do the same'. Tentatively He touched down the wheels he held the Gladiator there for a few seconds to make sure they weren't damaged and hen gently placed the aircraft onto the strip. As he rolled to a stop he was glad he had made it. Quickly exiting the aircraft he turned to watch Burgess approach the strip. Leaning on the outer wing strut he was amazed when it suddenly snapped in two and the upper wing sagged. 'I was really lucky, if that had broken on landing it might have been a different story', his thoughts raced ahead.

    Sq. Ldr. A.C. Martin: Rolled 5 +2(ace) -1 (50%+ dam) = 5 = Made it.
    http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4567790/

Flt Lt George Burgess approached the strip. He could see the skipper and the 'stringbags' were safely down. Keble was flying level with him and was giving him the thumbs up. Everything was 'hunky dorey' to land then. Keble peeled off as he committed himself to the final approach. Wheels down, taxi to parking area. The CO came across and Burgess quipped ' That's how it's done skip', Then he noticed the CO's upper wing. 'OH, well looks like first round's on me then'. 'Yes it is but I wonder if that last Italian made it back ok, never mind here's Keble. So we can all enjoy your first round in the mess while the ground crew patch up the old crates again.

Flt Lt. George Burgess: Rolled 6 +1 (Vet) -1 (50%+ dam) = 6 Anything you can do skip I can do better

    Superb Neil.
What an excellent postscript to my adventure.

I would have written this up as a proper scenario, but was afraid that not many people would have the Stringbags or the Martlets, although you could substitute any Carrier borne fighter escorts for that bit as they don't figure in the action.
July is upon us, and in August even more interesting reinforcements will arrive.

What a way to go flashed through Peter's mind as mere seconds later his hurricane smashed into the sea. Peter came round slowly. 'Why am I still alive?', was his first thought. The he realised that somehow his cockpit had remained airtight! He watched the surreal underwater world glide past his canopy as the hurricane dived towards the seabed. Without thinking he undid his harness. Time passed by so slowly. The hurricane's initial impact with the sea had taken much of the inertia out of his dive with death. Then he noticed that the hurricane was gliding underwater not plunging into the depths. Peter remembered putting his flaps into position to try and bring his nose up. The force of the impact had jammed them into this position. He watched his underwater world glide by. His feet felt wet. He realised then that the hurricane was taking in water. Will the canopy open he thought. It was then that he noticed the hurricane was only feet above a long sandy bar. looking up he could see the surface about 50 feet above his head. Luckily his life preserver was not damaged. Open the canopy, push out of the cockpit, inflate preserver. Hey presto a free ride up to the surface. So against his better judgement he pulled the canopy sharply back. To his surprise it sprang open immediately and immediately he was forced back into the cockpit by the sudden inrush of water. His breath knocked out of him he could only think of pulling the toggle to inflate the preserver. It did it's job magnificently, thrusting him upwards and out of the cockpit with such rapidity that he took a nasty blow to the head. Unconscious but alive, Peter Keble drifted with the tide towards the island of Gozo. Peter was pulled from the sea by a Maltese fisherman. It was 6 days later when he was put ashore in Valetta Harbour to the surprise of his comrades and a CO who now had to hurriedly write another letter to Peter's family.

PO Zindorf was already starting a banking roll to his left when the canon shells ripped through his tail section. Gazing back he knew the tail was gone. The Martlet went into a flat spin. Sven knew he had seconds to get out before the weight of the nose turned the flat spin into a deadly nose spin. A spin he knew he could not bail out from. He rattled off a quick ' Bailing out now...', slid the canopy back, stood up and as the nose went down executed a near perfect forward roll out of the aircraft. Waiting until his aircraft had spun past him he fell a while before pulling the toggle to deploy his chute. SNAP. He looked up checked the canopy was ok and observed the fight above and off to his left. He saw the Sqn Leader down the Hun 110 and gave chase whilst the second headed for home. Sven was glad to see the Co's plane coming back. He circled until a small black speck in the distance grew larger and the Sunderland Flying Boat landed next to him. It wasn't long before the was on board and having a cup of tea generously laced with rum. He assisted the crew as the Sunderland taxied across and picked up the two German crew of the downed 110. Sqn Leader Lisbon gave the pilot of the Sunderland a thumbs up and told him over the RT 'I'll escort you back. Once your safe I'll head off'. The Sunderland skipper answered 'Roger. Your chick and two hawks safely on board'. 'Roger, WILCO, OUT' He replied.

PO Daniel Prague had never been shot down before. This was a totally new experience for him. To low to bail out he knew he had to put the Martlet down before the flames reached the fuel tank. Glancing round he noticed the italian pilot giving him the thumbs up and indicating that he, Daniel, should put his aircraft down. A quick wave and a thumbs up back Daniel leveled the Martlet and pushed the stick forward. He decided to cut his engine and glide the aircraft down and hopefully land safely on the water. Forgetting the combat up above him Daniel, beads of sweat on his forehead, brought the Martlet down. Trying not to focus his eyes on the waves coming up to meet him he looked in the mid distance so he could gauge his approach. Nearly there he thought, a few more feet and I'm there. Unfortunately fate did not smile on PO Daniel Prague that day. Just as his wing tips were about to touch the water a freak wave caught the Martlet and flipped it over onto its back. PO Daniel Prague was knocked unconscious as the Martlet slowly settled into the water and began it's death dive to the sea below.

Aijima kept the Val as level as he could. He was looking for a specific point out at sea. Yes he could just make it out. Now all he had to do was put the stricken plane down and all would be well.Nose up, nose up. Bandō was shouting excitedly that Chishu had managed to shoot down both American fighters. Honour was preserved then, Aijima said to himself but we'll be buying the saki!Slowly he glided the Val towards the target area, nose up, nose up, gently does it. The Val suddenly dropped it's nose and hit the water with a sickening thud. Aijima was thrown forward then the Val dropped back and it's tail slapped into the sea. Popping the canopy he climbed out onto the wing. Looking back he could see the tell tail signs of smoke where the two American fighters had plunged into the sea. Shinichi was waggling his wings as they circled once and then flew off towards home.

"Come on Bandō, don't dally the sub will be surfacing soon and we need to be in the dinghy ready for pick up." There was no reply. Aijima looked back into the cockpit and could see Bandō slumped forward. He reached in to shake him and his head just lolled around like a broken doll. Bandō was dead. His neck broken in the crash. Aijima pullled away from the Val as it slid beneath the waves. A fitting grave for his brave warrior friend. The sub broke surface and within 5 minutes Aijima was on board and it slipped beneath the waves. 2 days later they rendezvoused with Ryuju.

Another fine closure from you Neil.
If you keep this up we will have to consider a pay rise.
    Considered it.
