Unlike Oberleutnant Helmut Paul Emil Wick flight from the morning, Oberleutnant Egon Mayer flight would not go as well. Their engagement involved not two but three Hurricanes. The Hurricane that got away from this morning, must of reported the encounter and the RAF is now aware of the Messerschmitt 109’s that are in the vicinity.
The engagement between the adversaries was a mix of long contained bursts trained on one another in a head to head confrontation. As each verge upon and fired their last bursts before maneuvering to avoid collisions at close range, the hail of lead between them took their toll.
Oberleutnant Egon Mayer was able to inflict enough punishment on his adversary, then his Messerschmitt 109 took. As he passed the Hurricane, he could see the pilot. The pilot was slumped to one side of his cockpit, which was laced with large holes in his canopy surrounding him in his perforate craft. Mayer then performed an Immelmann and pursued his opponent.
Ofw Fritz Strizel Messerschmitt 109 was taking hits from his targeted Hurricane. Ofw Karl Pfeiffer fired burst after burst into the Hurricane. Inflicting damaged with less precision then Ofw Fritz Strizel. Between the two of them, the Hurricane started to become sluggish. Sizeable cavity in the fuselage surrounding the engine compartment could be seen as they rapidly closed the distance between them, when the Hurriccane literally fell out of the sky. Then from out of know where, pieces are being torn away from Strizel’s 109, it then suddenly burst into flames, then a wing crumpled and the aircraft noses over. Strizel manages to bail out before the death spin begins. Pfeiffer yelled, “ He’s out ! He’s out ! Where did he come from !”. Pfeiffer was not sure if Strizel’s parachute every deployed, but hopefully it did and he will find his way home unnoticed by his adversaries.
Oberleutnant Egon Mayer was gaining ground., enough so to fire a burst at his target. He followed the tracer rounds to no avail. As he closed in, his opponents mass swelled within his target sight and he fired again. This time the 109’s stream of rounds struck home. The Hurricane could not withstand anymore abuse and plunge to its death. Mayer put his Messerschmitt 109 into a hard turn to regroup with Pfeiffer.
From his advantage point, Oberleutnant Egon Mayer, could see that his comrades were surprised by a third Hurricane. It was presently out of position to do any harm to Ofw Karl Pfeiffer after its ferocious assault on Ofw Fritz Strizel.
After regrouping with Ofw Karl Pfeiffer, Oberleutnant Egon Mayer made the decision to head home. The Hurricane that know one saw apparently did not want to tangle with two Messerschmitt 109’s. Mayer was not surprised, but was pleased, since Pfeiffer’s plane was full of holes and with his mentor being behind enemy lines or worst dead was not encouraging.
