    Yay!

College Winter semester will be over, and hopefully my brain will not have exploded. Need to deliver the Forsmann Bomber back to it's rightful owners. I could bring down the moving map, too, if we want to try running a scenario with it?

Sorry for taking so long to post. I'm putting on a Saturday night WW1 tournament again with Bill Hughes (conepipe). Will getting things signed up this weekend. Have prize support from Ares games for the winners. Hope to see many of you there.

    Hey, Doug!
I'm in. Even if I get shot down by a complete noob again, like last time. It was a blast, and I used your format to run a tournament at BottosCon in Surrey, BC, this past November.

Anything I can do to help this year? Run a Forssmann scenario?

The Forsman sounds good but I think I found a scenario for this year. I'll leave it a surprise but it should be fun.

Finally got my ducks in a row, and paid my taxes. I didn't have to sell my car or take out a second mortgage!

That big cloud dissipated, so I registered for Enfilade and booked a room in the Red Lion Inn. I didn't see any Enfilade rates advertised on the NHMGS site, so I must have missed it. I'll try for the almost second mortgage rate for AAA, and see if they will honor a Canadian Vet card for the Military Rate when I get there.

Anyway, I'm gonna be bringing the Forrsmann and my fuzzy butt to Olympia. I may have adult supervision, or not, depending on how other confusion in our lives sorts itself out.

Really looking forward to seeing all the players in the North West!

Default The Forssman Triplane is Saluted by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds!

Preparing for its return to Washington State, the Forssman Triplane is doing some circuits of the 19 Wing Airfield. As the Snowbirds usually spend the month of April practicing their upcoming airshow routine in lovely Comox, they decided to do a smoking flypast of the monster "Grandfather of Flight".

With a total wingspan of 50 meters, the Forssman Triplane has the same wingspan as the entire formation of Canadair CT-114 Tutor aircraft of the Snowbirds.

Here we see the Forssman doing a flypast over the main runway of the field, and the Snowbirds doing a wing sweep in the background.

There will be other shots over the next week, as the two work out kinks in their flight routines.

What a send off to a piece of aviation history!

Well, I didn't get out for more pictures of the Forssman.

However, I am booked on the Black Ball Ferry off the island for Friday. The bomber will be in Olympia Friday night.

Do we need more Aerodrome business cards? 'Drome Business Cards

I can have a few more printed up to hand out.

    Gentlemen,

Enfilade is only a couple days away. Once again I wait with baited breath to see if I will be able to attend. Now if nobody from my work dies in the next 48 hours I may just make it. I look forward to seeing you all again in Olympia!

    Hey, WWII Players,

I just swung by the not-so-local gaming store on the way to Enfilade 2014. He hadn't sold any of the WWII Series I (one) planes since I had been there last year. So, I asked him if he would make me a killer deal on the whole lot. The best he could do was 30% off, so the planes, after taxes were $11.00 USD. I took all of them.

So what? I don't want WWII planes, but they were collecting dust in Naniamo, and there are lots of PTO threads on this forum. I will sell them for cost. And if you are at Enfilade 2014, there is no shipping!

    1x Messerschmidt Bf 109E-3 (Balthasar) WW17e SOLD

    1x Grummann F4F-3 Wildcat (Galer) WW17g SOLD
3x Grummann F4F-3 Martlet III (Black) WW17h One SOLD
    1x Grummann F4F-4 Wildcat (McWorther) WW17i

2x Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen (Kaneko) WW17j One SOLD
2x Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen (Sakai) WW17k One SOLD
    2x Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen (Shindo) WW17l

There was one box set for WWII, Fire from the Sky ($27.00 USD).

Also, I picked up a few WWI Booster Packs ($9.00 USD each):
    2x Recon Patrol
    2x Top Fighters

If anyone is interested, these will be available until Saturday night, 10:30 PM. After that, shipping will apply.

See you all Friday or Saturday!

    Mike

EDIT: Convention over, and no surprise, but the Bf-109 didn't make it in the door. The remainder will be posted on the Sale/Trade/Wanted Forum.

I will also be there. Really managed to get the time off and spent the day gathering my stuff for Enfilade.

I have a complete WWI series 1-4 I would like to sell or trade for other gaming items, as well as a few WWI WOW and F-toys leftovers from my repaint stash.

I will also be lightening my built metel aircraft collection, as well as some unbuilt metel kits and decal sets.

I would like to go on Friday. The registration shows no cost. I have never been to a gaming convention but would like to go to this to see WGF played by experienced players. Can one just come or does one need to be registered to attend. I can only go Friday afternoon.

    Hi Dom,

You can register at the entrance. We should be open about noon. You'll be able to meet your squadron mates over a soda and hotdog. There should be room to do some practice flights before any of the evnets actually start.

Had a great time playing WWII at Enfilade this year. My daughter entered the tournament and made it through a few rounds in the loser's bracket. We truly enjoyed it. Always a great opportunity to play games and see fellow Aerodromers! Pflanzer is always a great teacher by the way - doesn't matter what the period is!

What a jerk. I brought a camera, had it in my pocket during the tournament, but was too busy to snap any pictures.

I don't think we even did the group shot at the end of the tourney with all the "winners".

So, by the "rules", Enfilade 2014 never happened, and James Denberger didn't actually win!

We may need to appoint an "official" photographer for these events.

    WOW!

What an amazing convention! We reached our highest ever attendance at 460 plus! Our newer, larger B&B was boomin all weekend. While I was busy most of the con, I was able to participate in two gaming sessions. My favorite was, of course, the Wings of Glory tournament run by Doug Nolan. We had 10 participants this year. Three lovely ladies and seven gentlemen flyers.

The first round was notable in two ways. First, I actually survived to move on to the second round! Second, was the gentlemanly conduct of Tony Pflanzer, who willingly flew off the edge of the board so his lovely opponent could also move on to the second round. I will not believe that her constant fidling with the GIANT hair pin in her hair, not the stories she told of using it in self defense, had anything to do with Tony's distraction!

The second round was my first use of a two seater in the tourny. I was very satisfied with my amazing, although accidental ability, to maintain my opponant in one of the guns arcs almost every turn until he exploded out of the sky. Drawing lots of zero's on my part helped a tiny bit.

The third and fourth rounds are a bit foggy since I was afforded the opportunity of a "by" between both rounds until the rest of combats caught up. I was so happy to have survived two rounds I admit, I started celebrating a bit early at the bar. The third round was hard fought but once again I managed to survive.

My final round was with an earlier nemisis, Mike Owen, who had obviously survived the explosion at three thousant feet, in our earlier battle. ( It was noted by an infantry officer in his reports, that Mike was seen clinging to the broken wing of his aircraft as it plumeted out of the sky. He fell off in a lake, a few hundred feet from shore, and was rescued by a boat full of young ladies from an all girl academy. When he reapeared at the aerodrome, just a few miles away, and three weeks later, he had many exciting tales to tell at the bar.)

I was a bit nervous about this final battle. Mike is a very good player, and has a very disarming accent when he talks. As we entered the melee, I felt that my stroke of good luck was about to come to an end. We flew about, taking shots at each other and making hits. Suddenly, and far earlier than I had expected, Mike went down in flames again. He was seen sticking to his plane and attempting to put out the flames. I watched as his plane dove into a lake, very near what looked like a school. I'm not sure if he survived this time, But, I guess we'll know if he dosn't show up at the aerodrome in two or three weeks.

This is my first tournament win in ANY event in the 16 years I have attended Enfilade. I hope I don't have to wait that long until the next time!

COMBATANTS, Enfilade 2014.... 1st place; James Denberger, 2nd place:Mike Owen 3rd place: Frank Durovchev, Noted in the daily reports: Tess Sutton, Jessica Grassman, Emma-Grayce Fleck, Dave Karaun, Jason Pleasant, Scott Murphy, Tony Pflanzer

My aplogies if i have mispelled names, the combat roster is a bit hard to read!

I thank all who made the journey, and hope to see you all again next year.

Let me correct one of those names for you james...may be the victory dance....Emma-Grayce Fleck
She had a blast...didn't take out any big names this year, but she played into the looser's bracket a few times and was pretty happy with herself.

LOL! Yes, correction noted! I do believe I have recovered from the celebrations. But these old eyes can't read modern penmanship!

I was very pleased to see younger members playing in several of the other WOG events. REMEMBER! they are the continuation of our hobby. Please continue to bring your younger players to the events!

    Default Enfilade 2014

I got some playing in this year. I seems that when you host a game you just don't get to play as much. This year I just enjoyed playing WOW/WOG for something like 10 or 12 hours (with a couple of breaks of course).
Lloyd and Dave's WW1 Austrians vs Italians:

As Lloyd told me he considers himself a modeler and gamer.

The afternoon session was more of Lloyd and Dave's senarios . Finns vs Russian. Both sides had one cannon firing aircraft. The Soviet
P-39 put the hurt on the Finns.

Sometime the Fins had numbers on their side.

I did notice that there appears to be a new generation of players. I hope it isn't a fluke, but a sign of continued interest in the game.
Three of the young players. The fourth is in gray on the right.

While the afternoon game was roiling along a fair sized Sails of Glory game was being played.

I want to thank all who attended. Took the time and effort to host games. Or did volunteer work for Enfilade. You all made for an enjoyable 3 days.

Passing unnoticed: The fact that I was there (for once, I *didn't* have a scheduling conflict).

Unfortunately, I have to say, my con was not quite as enjoyable as some other folks'. I was in five games, and all of them were ruined for me by various factors.

First game: _Check Your 6!_ WW2 match -- Japanese bombers with escorts hitting Port Moresby. I ended up with the P-400/P-39 pair on alert at the airfield, which meant my units started at ground level. Problem: Like all games, it takes forever to gain altitude -- by the time I reached an altitude where I could attack someone, the other two -400/-39 pairs had already engaged and either been destroyed outright, or had turned chicken and fled (one pair each), so I was staring down the barrel of 13:2 odds; I had no option but to dive away myself. (It is a sad comment on this scenario that the Allied ground defenses were as effective, if not more so, than the air power.) The GM admitted post-game he had in fact blown that particular call. Frustrating, and boring to boot.

Second game: _Bag The Hun_ WW2 match -- two IJ Mavis flying boats and four Glen observation planes serving as bombers attempt to destroy a US airship hangar in Tillamook, OR (in essence, an expansion of the only Japanese fixed-wing bomber attack on CONUS during the War). The game is made by an outfit called "Too Fat Lardies" -- they should be called "too dumb to realize a completely-random initiative system means someone will be lucky to get off one shot in four hours of gaming", because that's what happened to me. (Granted, that one shot did end up killing the IJ commander, sort-of -- he lost control and crashed into a mountainside; his death haiku read "Bad loss-of-control/ Fujita hits the mountain/ Glen now in a glen".) It didn't help that the randomness of the initiative system guaranteed it would be impossible for the US to succeed save via pure-blind luck. Coupled to the "Yahtzee" damage system (what is it with the British and Rolling Fistfuls Of Dice?), the rules were Not Good -- do not buy them.

Third game: _Wings of Glory_ WW1 -- Lloyd's game. This one was partly my fault; I thought I was signing up for the other _WoG_ match, "The Battle of Riga" (one had to read the full desc. in order to figure out it was _WoG_, and with the line stacking up behind me...). The real problem here was not the game itself; it was the two people sitting next to me who insisted of broadcasting *every single random neural firing which occurred in their brains* at maximum volume -- after thirty or so minutes, rather than make a fuss, I suicided and took a walk.

Fourth game: _CY6!_ Jet Age -- US aircrew-rescue in Vietnam vs. NVAF. Another example of badly-botched scenario design -- between the fact that the US F-4s had between 2 and 4 turns on board before risking fuel-starvation, the fact that the NV side could withhold its entry on board a turn and a half if they so chose, and the ludicrous (if accurate) US rules-of-engagement, that the US side still managed to pick up the pilot was more the result of the NV side missing shots and running out of ammo than any strategy on the US side's part (and they lost *two* F-4s in the process!). After four hours of play, the extent of my activity in the game was dropping 10 bombs each from my pair of A-1 Skyraiders onto an AA site and a truck; meanwhile, one of the players of the F-4 pairs had managed to get one blown away by an AA gun and the other its radar system shot out, so he spent the entire game flying in circles and conveniently forgetting he had non-radar-using missiles (Sidewinders); and the other F-4 pair's main notable accomplishment was absorbing badly-aimed fire from the NV. I had to walk away from that one as well, as the line for registration was already most of the way across the room by that point. A badly-designed scenario, and a example of "players, if you aren't there to help your side win, stay the [CENSORED] home".

Fifth game: _Golden Age of Air Racing_ -- '20s and '30s air racing. The models were nice, and the notion of converting it to a gridless system was interesting -- but this game fails miserably the first rule of racing games: "Headwinds good; tailwinds bad" (that is: The rules should be written such that the person in the lead should *not* be able to extend his lead, nor should the person at the rear fall further behind), and is unnecessarily random in movement (a player at full throttle is as likely to move *slower* than someone at cruise as he is to move faster). After twenty minutes, and a brace of low die-rolls, I claimed illness, and took a walk. This is a bad game design -- avoid it.

Special Mention goes to the kid who spent the entire con whistling like a dental drill -- even with all the background noise, I could hear him clearly from across the room... and I choose the dental-drill motif for a reason. :P

So: Two games ruined by bad game rules; two ruined by bad scenario design; one ruined by excessively annoying players. The facility is nice; the food is excellent; the hotel's rooms are better than most cons I've attended; but these do not quite cover for the fact that the main reason I came there -- to get into a good game -- was blocked at every turn. I suppose if I can come next year, I will have to run some games myself.

Here's the pictures I took from the Saturday morning "Battle of Riga". Everybody except the young kid who left early seemed to have a blast. Most everyone was shot down at least once but bravely flew back on to try again. I also forgot to take pictures of the tournament Saturday evening but I guess I have to officially agree that James won the tournament.

Hi Csadn, were you there on Friday? This was my first gaming con of any sort and I went on Friday afternoon. I talked to the guy that ran the Bag the Hun WW2 match. He asked if I would like to play but I knew I couldn't stay the entire evening session so I declined. I was hoping to catch a WOG game and learn some rules but they were not playing that game on Friday. I did stay till 8:15 pm watching the "Over the Top game". It was based on trench warfare during WWI. I would like to go again next year but I'll be prepared to spend more than an afternoon.

    Dom,
If you can only attend one day I would suggest Saturday. Arrive early and plan on staying late. If you preregister you are guaranteed one game at the time of registration and a second when you arrive. The last period Saturday night has traditionally been the WOG tournament. I wouldn't worry about using one of your two picks on this one we always can make room for more.

Good to see that our allies over the pond had another great year at Enfilade again this year. Long may it continue.
meantime I'm off to a one day convention this weekend, to show the flag at the show where I put on my very first demo game some 30 odd years ago.
