Default Official Oeffag 53, 153 and 253 Painting Thread

Again, couldn't find a painting thread for the A-H Oeffag 53, 153 and 253 series. Though these planes were based on the Albatross D. III, they are generally considered to be distinct from their Albatross cousins.

I have done my first two is A-H swirl (sworl?) camo. The brown camo is homemade, that is, I copied the pattern I found on the Aerodrome website and made my own decal. The purple version I bought from CalFaber when he was selling off much of his stock. The models are from Shapeways, done by our very own jbmacek.

Here is an Oeffag 153, Oberleutnant der Reserve Ernst Strohschneider, Flik 61J (still need to do the wheelcovers in squadron colors one of these days and add a pilot).

Here is an Oeffag 253, Offizierstellvertreter Kurt Gruber, Flik 41J (again, need to do the wheelcovers in squadron colors and add a pilot).

    Very nice job!
The swirly camouflage is so strange: it looks a bit as if the ground crew didn't have time to paint the upper surfaces and glued wallpaper on them instead!

Very nice, Joergen! How did you do the wood grain and the wing radiator?

Yet again a fine bit of painting.

Wood grain: white base and small amounts of light brown carefully brushed on. The wing radiator was already on the Nexus mini.

I see. So the light brown is transparent, and you put on multiple layers to get the wood effect?

Brunowski's Oeffag 153/52 (with yellow spirals), 153/209 (round nose, plain red), and Mihalov's Nieuport 11

    Classic green sworl on 253/64.

I never see those green sworles without breaking the tenth Commandment Zoe.
I have tried to emulate them several times with a marked lack of success.

Love the swirl camo on these beasties - I have some decals from 1/144 Direct to try it myself one of these days...

Beautiful stuff here! And the converted 'rounded' nose is nicely done, too!

    All the best,
    Matt

Lovely work on your quartet, Paul! That 'spinner-less' version of the DIII has always been a favorite

I have to admit that, end-to-end, I prefer the Valom models. They are a lot more enjoyable to paint albeit more difficult to ‘assemble’.

Just got some Reviresco kits; so I will have experience with the options. Haven’t repainted any Nexus/Ares models. I not know if I can over come the psychological barrier of the ‘don’t write in books’ equivalent attitude.

Great work - looks like a lot of handpainted decals.

Thanks. Sort of hand painted decals...they’re homemade decals on decal paper but I overpainted most of them as I thought them too dull. The only ones not overpainted were the serial numbers on ‘1’ and ‘2’ which were printed on clear decal paper. The others were done on white decal paper. Should have done the serial # for ‘5 X’ on clear but that’s hindsight and, yes, those were slightly touched up with paint. The main problem was the white surround on the crosses. This was too small on the images I used and the white disappeared when printed. So what you see is from painting lots of Napoleonic piping. Would do things differently next time but I’d need to create crosses as objects and superimpose 2 of slightly different sizes so that there’s a black one in one with just a black outline. Then print on clear decal paper, position on the appropriate aircraft surface painted white and then paint the desired colour up to the cross outline. That’s my plan for next time. Don’t know about the ‘k’ decal. Probably have to build that from drawing objects too.

I love seeing all of the custom re-paints that people do but the swirl pattern decal is awesome.
