A cold beer will do. Won't be flying with you but I'll keep the mess warm and cosy every time you're gone flying. I'm looking forward on hearing the wild stories of all the adventures.

Iam sitting on a sunny beach on the Pacific Rim waiting for the *hit to hit the fan or rather the Japs to Hit Pearl Harbour.

The door open, a man staggers in, trips but manages not to fall, the room goes quiet as heads turn to see what the commotion is.
"Ah, found you at last, hic..... it only took me five pubs to find you, hic.....I had to buy a round in each, hic....."
He staggers to the bar and uses it to keep upright.
"Barman set me up an account, hic......Gentlemen a round of drinks on me, hic"
    With that he passes out!

It seems popular opinion, anyone adverse to me re-naming the WTO as the ETO, European Theater of Operations? It will still cover the 4 main areas, BoB (from Fall of France/Dunkirk to BoB actual), Med (Gibraltar to Cairo and all points north and South between), Norway, Russia (includes Russo/Finnish war).

All the same to me old boy, as I sit here in a bar in Valletta with a G&T to hand staring out over the British lake.

Very soon my Hurricanes will take to the air, my Martlets will roar to be released from the carrier, my Gladiators will fly CAPs over their nest and slowly and ponderous, my Swordfishes will deliver their swimming bombs against those beautiful Italian cruisers. As I stand in a cold beach in Dover, drinking something strong and tasting what might be one of my last cigarettes I ask you, Neil, is that what you want from life? To change one letter from a group of words that in this day of early 1940 hasn't any meaning for me? Is that it? Well, then. Go right ahead, my friend.

Well, it is a very "strong" letter

Don't ponder over it too long dear chap. We need your Swordfish to bolster the defenses of this lovely isle. Come over here and join me in the sunshine enjoying whatever exotic wine you fancy along with the exotic beauties of the island, and that includes the scenery.
We will get enough red tape to wrap the whole Italian Navy soon enough without worrying over one letter.
I await your arrival with the utmost anticipation old friend.

    Dear Kyte:

Captain A. R. M. Bridge told me just this morning that we´re to make a run to boost the Mediterranean defenses and we'll take some planes to Malta.
Our sailing nest will be escorted by the light cruisers Birmingham and Liverpool and the destroyers Daring, Amazon and Ambuscade. We will be crowded with 6 extra planes (Gladiators) to go to Malta, but we'll manage.
I'll see you soon if I can manage to land in your beautiful island.

    Your's,

    Nicolau Lisbon

P.S. My brother (he's in France) sends you his regards.

    One for Rob and Joaquim

What spot is it where the Fleet doth lie,
At anchor 'neath a cloudless sky,
Where Jack can't keep his 'mouthpiece' dry?
    - It's Malta!

What place is it where the winds can blow,
Where the rain can rain, till it's touch-and-go-
Whether you'll swim your way down Strada or no?
    - It's Malta!

Which Isle is this where Younger's stout,
Has caused the head of many a lout -
To swell three times its size? no doubt
    - It's Malta!

Where can the eye with rapture gaze -
On a forest of masts, and funnels, and stays,
Where saving 'fag-packets' is quite a craze?
    - It's Malta!

Where is it where the glaring sun
Will cause your margarine to run,
Until it's melted down to 'nun'?
    - It's Malta

What blot is this upon the map
    Where poets get the 'Doo-la-tap'
Because their poetic brains went snap?
    - It sure is Malta!
See you on the Dark Side......

Following Neil's cue, for all us pilots in the Burning Skies:

    The Fly

    Little Fly,
    Thy summer's play
    My thoughtless hand
    Has brushed away.

    Am not I
    A fly like thee?
    Or art not thou
    A man like me?

    For I dance
    And drink, and sing,
    Till some blind hand
    Shall brush my wing.

    If thought is life
    And strength and breath
    And the want
    Of thought is death;

    Then am I
    A happy fly,
    If I live,
    Or if I die.

    William Blake

How to win a war with drunken hobby poets?

The poets usually win the wars.

    "(...)
Rise up and brace your troops for the attack
Ah the dreamers ride against the men of action
Oh see the men of action falling back
    (...)"

Is this mess still open? If so, I would like a port, and orders where to land my planes.

Amazing what transpires while on leave for a couple of weeks.

    Never fear Eric.

The Mess is open and on the ups,
with drunken poets in their cups.
On Malta's shore a Kyte now sups,
    awaiting heroics from young pups,
who chase the clouds in ancient planes,
    whilst ever freedoms hope remains.
    Lest Mussolini seize the reins,
to bind its folk in Fascist chains.

What poet would not grieve to see His breth'ren write as well as he? But rather than they should excel, He'd wish his rivals all in hell.
