Lightbulb Pre-Prague Con 2014: Battle of France

Yesterday we started with testing missions (according to timetable) for Prague Con 2014. I would be glad if other Game Masters will post their AAR's here too, because I am really curious about your ideas

    Battle of France
    Prague, 15th January 2014
    1:30, 4 players, 8 planes

Date of mission: 15th May 1940
Location: two strategic bridges over Meuse river near Sedan
Story: Battle of Sedan is coming to the end, German troops are crossig the river Meuse and really need to stop move of French reinforcements over two bridges on the south of the city. French planes and the two Belgian Hurricanes patrol over the location and need stop German bombers.
    Axis Forces: 2x Junkers Ju.87 Stuka B-2; 2x Messerschmitt Bf.109 E-3
    Allied Forces: 2x Dewoitine D.520; 2x Hawker Hurricane Mk.I
Axis victory conditions: destroy both bridges and leave the battlefiel
Allied victory conditions: destroy both Stukas before they succesfully bomb both targets
Balance: Perfect. We agreed that the battle was well balanced. It is necessary to play at least two dive bombers.

Allied aircraft spotted enemy's movement turns towards him.

White nose Stuka in the dive bombing maneuvre (btw, it safe it from at least two direct hits), British Hurricane after Immelman and the Belgian can not shoot (enemy is too low). Both Bf.109 turning for the next round. The last D.520 is approaching.

British Hurricane and D.520 shoot down the last Stuka just after the succesfull bombing (| for both sides) and Bf.109 are shooting down the Belgian plane (| for Axis). After 1:30 the battle is over (Allies won, because Germans did not bomb both targets [just the only one]).

Great appetizer! Thanks for posting the AAR, Dan!
Did you use the "resurrection" rule for downed pilots?

Thank you Andrzej, it was perfect game and I'm really looking forward to Prague Con when I can play it with you
No, not yet. Where I can find them?

Nowhere, it's just like we call a right to return to battle after one turn of waiting

Oh No, everybody started with 2 planes (2x Hurries, 2x D.520; Ju.87 + Bf.109; Ju.87 + Bf.109) and after 1:20 everyone has just one plane. We could speed up planning and the game was easier.

Looked like a really interesting little tussle.
Can't wait for my Stuka reinforcements to arrive, so that I can have a go at something like this over Malta..

Malta would be the second option. I think it can work even better with Gladiators and Fiats. Hope we will try it too soon. Hope you will upload some photos and AAR after arriving your Stukas

    Thumbs up

That sounded like a perfect game for the Con.
look forward to more Test games.

    Great mission, Daniel.

Two hour time and 2 planes per player - hard to insert here a resurrection rule.

This one is a little bit favouring the Allies, so you need good Stuka pilots. (Honza? - HOOOOONNZA?!?)

Daniel - just give us a few additional informations:

    Multiple crew hit possible?
Aim optional rule? ...for Stuka gunners, too?
    Altitude rules?
    Voilŕ le soleil d'Austerlitz!

    The time was only 1:30
The important motto for Stukas is "be faster than your enemy." It worked - one Stuka did it's mission succesfully, the other one not.
Multiple crew hit - no. We wanted game without pilots hits, because I think it is destroing the natural tempo of the game. I think this rule would be one of most discussed for the Con.
Aim rule - not for this time, we can discuss about it for the Con (important for Stukas, but their main goel is bombing).
Altitude rules - yes, it is an important part of dive bombing and the reason why white Stuka survive the dive attack on one bridge (Hurries were too high for attack it, I mentioned it near one photo).

Your oppoinion, Sven? Thank your for your feedback.

Nice AAR. My interest in WGS has been picking up a lot in recent months and AARs like this one just fueling the fire!

That's the rule I like least in WGS. A wounded pilot just seems to throw the whole tempo of the game off, just as you said.

Altitude is very good to play with the dive-bombers. You could always do a dry run bomb-drop before the game, to get the concept into your head or at least refresh the sequence. Sven has a very good pictorial guide to dive-bombing. The concept is otherwise a bit difficult to comprehend without the guide.Click image for larger version.

Kevin, you remind me with your Stuka that I am really looking forward to seeing someone with two full desert squadrons.
Dive bombing is a little complex sequence in WGS, but it makes games with dive bombers unique
By the way, I see you are in Berlin now - do you join us for Con weekend?

    Hi Dan Sam,
fortunes have dived and finances are bombed, so any trips have to be well considered, but the call is strong....
I too would love to see some desert squadrons, even if they are scaled-down ones.

If you need, I can help you with seeking accomodation - we found last year a nice hostel (about 10 minutes from LGS) for Nemanja about 35 €/night. And the train trail near Usti nad Labem along Elbe river is really nice

Yes, some of my superfantasy repaints called "Tobruk Defenders" (look at their tails)

Very nice detail! But I see they have letters of different squadrons - are they based on some real planes? (by the way, did you mention that one of new Spitfires has KHoB on one side and KAoB on the other? )

No, they are nor based on any real aircraft Just pure (well, less then semi-historical) schemes. WX-L is likely "Skalski" and RF-A rather "303", Red 1 is absolutely not linked to anything, but no matter.
    Dan, what does KHoB/KAoB mean?

That was remarkable scenario. I liked flying D.520 during that battle on Prague Con 2014.
