Thread: Subscription Poll

  1. #1

    Default Subscription Poll

Would site members be prepared to pay a monthly subscription to keep the site running?

A yes or no vote is a good start, but ultimately it depends on how much is in the asking really. I am definitely prepared to pay, but money is so tight that every expenditure has to be well considered. I am sure it will be a fair one anyway. This site is soul food, so hey, I will have to go on a diet with the real stuff...less dry bread and more water.

  4. #4

    Default

voted yes (dependant on cost of course ,wifey's just been made redundant)

  5. #5

    Default

Not voting on the cost just to give Keith a rough idea how many on the site would be up for it.

  6. #6

    Default

If I could pay through paypal, and a reasonable fee, yes, of course.

  7. #7

    Default

I voted yes but it would depend on the level of cost.
I could be just living on a pension next year so will need to consider all expenses.

Voted yes. Followed the discussion in the other thread. It seems like allowing access for free, but only allowing access to certain more "advanced" features via subscription is reasonable.

  9. #9

I am in favor of subscriptions for those members who can afford to do so. If enough folks are willing to subscribe, the monthly amount would be minimal.

I'm in; I don't want to think about doing without me 'Drome fix at least once a week
I might have to even talk to my "Team Members".

I make financial donations to the site already (interesting to note some of the frequent users who don't have any donation gongs), so not prepared to pay a monthly sub.

Some of those frequent users do of course (as you do) contribute through actively promoting the game and this site at not inconsiderable personal expense at shows, cons and other events

That's quite true, and such activity should be recognized. However, if the site can't function due to a lack of funding, where is the platform for recognition?
    Baldrick does have a point.

See my comment on the other thread regarding the site's role as Ares' advertising and PR department. Just a suggestion.......

I am already donating $5.00 per month, so I guess I am already subscribed!

  18. #18

Yes and I for one am one of those yet to contribute. That does not mean I wont, I just can't afford to at present. Loosing Ł1000 a month being on half pay but still trying supporting and run events that promote the hobby, the travel expenses etc all add up. Good job swmbo is very understanding (even if most of my other stuff has to go to make room for more mini's and a Zeppelin!). I am sure I am not the only one in a personal jam. However, when I am able to I will and if it becomes necessary to pay a monthly subscription then I will, until then I suppose I'd better shut up and let those that have contributed decide what is to happen. TTFN.

I would be open to it, if I could pay quarterly or annually, or better yet for several years at a time.

I'm for it, but if enough was raised over 6 months to run the site (and be in profit) then perhaps reduce payments for future subs? Or earn site credits that get you a code at AA shop?

Just an idea. Might make this idea generally more popular.

I'm in either way. Got your six bros.

There's an idea... maybe the Premium Package gets you a discount for all your Aerodrome Accessories orders (excluding Ares-produced items) for the subscription's duration. Thinking not a lot, maybe 5 to no more than 10%.

I don't think that those that have donated have a lock on ideas; debate is always welcome. And yes, many of us are in a bad place money-wise; I'm not sitting as well as I did 4 month's ago, though certainly better than many. In any case, Keith decides what to do; we need to give him our constructive thoughts, and the understanding of his decision.
So no shutting up; GOT IT CAPTAIN!

I have really enjoyed this site and the friends and acquaintances I have made here over the past three years, I would certainly not want to loose those, but like most things it would depend on cost. I understand that the site costs money to run and I certainly don't begrudge subscribing to keep the site afloat, but what would it mean if it costs x to run over a year for y years with z members what happens when we get z+1 or 3 or 5 what happens to the extra, the site then becomes a profit making site and surely then tax laws come in or... I hope you see what I mean.
In principle I agree to a subscription but could it not be done another way by increasing slightly the prices in AA a scout base costing $5 ? as long as we don't price out.

  24. #24

Or maybe keep a "fundraising thermometer" permanently posted with the projections for that year's operating costs, then suspend fundraising/subscription-collecting activity once the goal is met?

Or the excess could be donated to an aviation-related charity, maybe... Keith would need to talk it over with his tax advisor/accountant.

It's one of those things I'd been meaning to do, & it kept slipping my mind. As I said in the other thread, donation made & subscription purchased. I'm not afraid to put my money where my mouth is for as long as I can afford to.

I would but I think that it would cost us more in the long run with new members. I feel most everyone here has a big heart and gives when a need arises. And we could always have a fund drive each year. Like a telethon. That would be a better idea I think.

    I agree, wingman. Good idea.

I'm not a fan of a steady payment.

I like the idea more to support the site with individual actions.

Having read all the posts, and mulled over the need for the Oberst to know that he has a steady income to run the site for a long term change over to be viable, I think that a sliding scale of membership, as suggested elsewhere, is the way forward.Nevertheless I do not like the idea that it will be an obvious one to the members, who is contributing the most. Having extra posting rights may flag up who is contributing the most unless it is handled very subtly.
Those of us who can afford a bit more can support the other members until such a time that their finances recover. After all we have done the same sort of thing for single members or their dependents in times of need. Could we not extend it to other members?
I for one am in whilst soever I can provide the money to help keep the Drome afloat. All I ask is that no big deal is published to show who is and who is not contributing. We do not want a segregated community to arise from this.

For my hiking group I have a fall fundraiser going on right now. Donations of $5.00 or more are asked for. If a member gives, for each $5.00 they give I am putting their name into a raffle for some hiking gear. So, the more they give, the more likely they may win something. I tell them how much the site costs and what other plans the monies will be used for (important to let folks know WHERE their money will be spent).

So, joining some thoughts together, create a fundraiser medal (you know we like our medals), and perhaps run some sort of raffle once a year (or quarter) and allow folks a chance for some Wings of War/Glory items.

I have no idea what I might do, since my next paychecks are still in Congressional limbo at the moment. Once that is all squared away, assuming it hasn't hurt my finances too much, I'll know better what I'll be able to afford.

I just figured out what the issue was. it was the rank images that wanted a login to the sever.. not this site! I've removed them and it is working now. I'll throw those images into an album and post them again that way.

Andy, you need to look in your Sent Folder (over on the left). There were 540 PMs dating back to Jan. I deleted the oldest of them for you so that you could start sending out PMs again, but you need to go in and clean the rest out so they don't count against your total. You can change your Settings so that it does not save each PM in the sent folder.

At Consimworld, a board gaming site, they have a yearly fundraiser. Different levels of contributions, $5, $10 and $25, get you some vendor discounts and some print your own games. Maybe something similar could work here? Not sure how many non-Ares vendors would contribute here. Consimworld covers just about every wargame maker and some others too. At lease you could get a new medal!?
