in order to get the front gunner in, I removed the two front cabin struts, super glued the gunner in place, and replaced the struts with two pieces of brass rod

like my Strutter, this is ostensibly from RNAS 7 squadron. They had the Caudrons for a brief time, and escorted them with the 2 seat fighter version of the 1 1/2 strutter before replacing the G4 with the single seat bomber version of the strutter

The front gunner is a very nice touch John.
It is good to see a new aircraft take its place on the Showcase.

I'm sure other people are doing them, I just couldn't see this thread anywhere.
I really love these early types, both the pushers, and the tractors with beam support tails.
    lets have more pictures

Due to the low weight limit, the bomber version can only carry one gun, so the gunner must dismount it from the front, to defend against rear attack!

Way back in April I first thought about dipping my toes into the pond that is Shapeways and asked for some advice on the forum. As a result I ordered a couple of planes as a trial that sat untouched for a while until I had the time, and I finally got them painted last month.

One of the planes I chose was the Caudron G.4 by kampfflieger (in WSFP). The other plane that I'd ordered, the Short Bomber, was printed in WSF and I wanted to compare the two. Ultimately, there's pretty much no difference that I was able to detect! I hadn't realised when I chose this particular plane what sort of can of worms I was opening though! Several different unofficial cards existed for it, with different fire arcs and they even used different sized bases. I got reading and researching and found that different configurations of armament were common - thus I chose one that seemed fairly common and had a couple of surviving examples in museums that gave me some useful photos to which I could refer. I decided on markings that would likely have been representative of 4 Wing, RNAS. Next, I realised that there wasn't actually a flight stand for this base yet - so I set about designing one!. It was a lot more fiddly than I'd anticipated making this base - but I learned a lot in the process and my next will be better!

My initial hesitance in starting my first Shapeways planes was being unsure of how to best prepare them, as well as sourcing crew figures. I sought the mythical Johnson's Klear polish in vain, so finally plumped for coating them with thinned PVA. Two coats of this and nothing seemed to be happening. The surfaces weren't benefitting from it so I paused and re-thought things. I finished with a couple of coats of thinned gloss varnish which did make a difference; more coats would have made for a smoother finish, but if I'd continued I was worried about losing definition on detail that I wanted. So after a couple I called it quits and got on with things.

I wasn't sure which crew figures I wanted to use, so I ended up buying one sprue of pilots (in FUD) from Shapeways, and Boney10+ and Flying Helmut were kind enough to donate some of different designs and manufacturers. Many thanks again chaps.

I based the colour scheme, markings and armament on a couple of surviving planes, one of which was the Smithsonian NASM example. The paint scheme wasn't complicated, but the plethora of tiny and hard-to-get-to struts meant for a lot of cursing while painting this up!

Decals were a combination of Dom's Decals and home-made ones. The pilot was initially going to be a ReducedAircraftFactory FUD pilot, but the head snapped off while I was (very gently) checking the fit, so I chose instead for a Peter Pig scarf-wearing flyboy. The observer (another Shapeways one) should probably be firing a Vickers since RFC Caudrons generally seemed to be Vickers-equipped - but I'm fine with the Lewis too, frankly. Their scales don't really match closely, with the pilot seeming a little oversize.

Hello, here is my first one (second one is still on the workbench). Finally something to shoot at with Eindeckers and to be defended by Moranes. However, I would like to ask, if anybody can give he some advise where to get larger bomber base, similat to one like Caproni or Gotha? Aerodrome accesories is out of business and I was not able to find any STL file available for 3D printer on the internet. Has anyone any source? Last hope is Litko, but that one is not in EU. Thanks for any kind of advice.

    Nice job, Georg
The Caudron falls between the wingspans that denote the base size, being too small for the smaller bomber base but bigger than most tandems, so it can use either or an unofficial one in between.
These are the pertinent points from Andrea:
Wingspan is what determines the base size of planes (number of engines is not a factor).
The huge planes with wingspans of 29 metres and upwards (Staaken, Felixstowe, HP O/400, etc) have the biggest base (8cm x 11cm approx).
The big planes with wingspans of 22.2 to 24 metres (Caproni Ca.3, Gotha G.V, Friedrichshafen G.III, etc) have the medium size base (6.8cm x 8.8cm, exactly twice the width of a 'normal' fighter card).
Planes with a smaller wingspan up to an undefined maximum, a bit larger than the 14.36m span Bregeut 14 (including the 14.55m FE2 and the 15.24m AEG N.I) use the 'normal' fighter base. The exact maximum has not been defined.
Furthermore Andrea mentions the potential of a fourth base size (one and a half 'normal' cards wide) for those planes with a wingspan of approximately 17-18m (such as the Farman F.40 and the Caudron G.4), but since this base size was declined by Ares it's likely that such planes will have to go down to the 'normal' fighter size base or up to the medium (Gotha etc) size base, although which is not yet decided upon.
    * Zoe suggests as a rule of thumb - Go by wingspan but in boundary cases (smaller than Gotha, larger than Br14), 2 seaters go smaller, 3+ seaters go larger.
Seems to make sense and as good a compromise as any to break the deadlock.

    Very nice Caudron, Georg!

I don't know of a source for bases unfortunately (some of us are trying to make our own but mine are a bit rough). As Dave describes, the G4 would have a base of the standard 68mm length x 66mm width if you want to go with an unofficial size (which I prefer for planes between 17 - 22 meters wingspan; I use: wingsoflinen wiki to check stats), or given its stats of 15 damage points and slow XC deck I think a standard size base is fine.
