Thread: Convention Medals

  1. #1

    Default Convention Medals

    Greetings fellow members,

Given the varied nature of conventions around the world, we will utilize the following guidelines for convention medals starting on 1 January 2014. Members who have previously been awarded convention medals will retain those medals.

Each geographical region will have three sets of convention medals - two for major conventions and one for minor conventions. Each geographical region will determine which two major conventions to award the distinctive medals. Currently, there are four geographical regions - Australia, Continental Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The individuals who will oversee the member conversation and choice of the distinctive convention medals are Zoe (Zoe Brain), Andrzej (Nightbomber), Rob (Flying Officer Kyte), and DB (Diamondback), respectively. Such a system should address local convention conditions while creating an equitable system for members worldwide.

As an example of the major convention medals, the two distinctive major convention medals for the United States will be Origins and Gen-Con. The minor convention medal will be awarded to members who attend any other type of gaming convention recognized by their geographical-region community; it is a one-time award. For example, in the United States, this medal would encompass conventions such as Rock-Con and Historicon. The minor convention medal will enable a greater acknowledgment of convention participation than otherwise feasible.

Each medal will have Participant and Event GM versions, and the two distinct major convention medals will have four levels - 1 year, 2 years (with bronze star), 3 years (with silver star), and 4 or more years (with gold star). The minor convention medals will be unique for each region, but can only be earned once per each region; if folks travel to other regions and participate in a minor convention, they can be awarded that region's minor convention medal.

It is our hope that these changes will enable members to earn medals for convention activity, while maintaining a reasonable workload for the volunteers responsible for designing and maintaining the award system.

If you would like to have a given convention considered for a major convention medal or approved for the minor convention medal, please contact the individual overseeing your area.

    Howdy Eric,

What specs are used to qualify a con as a minor con?

  10. #10

    Default

A minor con would be any legitimate gaming convention not covered by one of the major cons. This would exclude club gatherings, game nights at game stores, etc. For example, this Saturday, folks from Illinois and Wisconsin are meeting for a scramble. That would not count. If the convention has some combination of a website, registration process, multiple games being played, a hundred or more folks playing, vendors, etc., you are probably good to go. If you are not sure, contact the lead for your region, and provide info on the con. Your lead will be able to tell you if the con qualifies. The minor con medal will become operative on 1 January 2014.

Blake, the BGG con in Texas would qualify, as would Flatcon in Illinois. Look at Flatcon's website for an example: http://www.flatcon.com/default.shtml

Thanks Eric. I haven't heard of BGG, maybe before my time, I arrived in Texas in 1955

I am hosting a Fly-In for WGF at MillenniumCon 16 this year. It has been dominated by Canvas Eagle for several years but this year the CE boys aren't running it so I am filling the void with WGF.

Blake, as the US Region "focal", I'm pretty much inclined to say that unless there's some specific reason to DISapprove a minor con, it's Fair Game. We want to encourage exposure of the game, and to my thinking we do that more by being inclusive than exclusive.

  13. #13

That's cool Diamond. So I don't know how many from this forum will be attending the con but it would be nice to have something in case any do show up. Coog, from the SOG site is going to help with planes, if he can get that weekend free. So pencil that con in for a medal creation in January 2014 and we can award them in February 2014, or whenever y'all decide. I think this is a cool idea and something extra for the members of the 'drome

Blake, there won't be a specific Con Medal for MC, it'll just be one of many sharing the Minor Con medal. The reason each country's Big Two get their own is ESPECIALLY wanting to encourage participation at the highest-visibility events... trying to strike a balance between "special recognition" and the graphics effort and server space each distinct medal takes up. Trust me, a little here, a little there, pretty soon you're talking serious server-space... and thus serious money.

  15. #15

That's cool, I understand completely. It will still be a cool medal to award to participants. I like it

Maybe for the minor medals you could have a small # in it to show how many different cons attended? Say you attend Fall In, Cold Wars and Huzzah! you would have the same medal but a small '3' inside it? Just my 2 rounds...

Sounds like a good idea, but would very quickly end up needing lots of medals. Even though they would use the same base design, each number would require a separate image file and have to be managed and awarded separately as well

Not sure if this is the place to ask this..., so my apologies if this is improper procedure. Would either Council of Five Nations (Schenectady, NY) or Havoc (Shrewsbury, MA) meet the criteria for minor cons? The 37th CoFN is being run 10-12 October 2014, whereas Havoc XXX is scheduled for 28-30 March 2014. They're just about the only significant cons in the area, so it would be great if they qualify...

    Thanks.

If it has a venue and is open to and announced to the public, it pretty much qualifies.

We also have Huzzah! up in Portland Maine in May. I'll be putting on a WGF game at each or these 2014 cons.

Not familiar with Huzzah!, probably because Portland is a haul. I have plans to attend both CoFN & Havoc, and will probably run a WGF or WGS event at Havoc... we should coordinate so as to guarantee no overlap. It would allow us to both play and run.

Below is how we started recording minor cons on the Anchorage. If you have minor con nominations, please post something as close to these as possible. This way, folks can have as much of the relevant info as possible. The minor con lists are one way to promote local cons. As the area leaders approve the minor con nominations, I will edit the lists above.

Just reading this thread so here is my thought. I understand that GenCon and Origins are big cons but at Origins I saw more fantasy and Si Fi then historical gaming. I have been going to Historicon/Cold Wars and Fall In for the past 20 years and know they are more historical then the others. Maybe the type of con should have some consideration. Just a thought.

HMGS which runs Historicon, Cold Wars and Fall In allow only 10% of the games to not be historical.

    Hi Eric!
    Just a comment.
Cancon is far from a minor Con.
It is almost certainly the largest con held in Australia being held in 3 large halls over 3 days & attracting players from all over Australia & even some from overseas (NZ & Canada)
It covers almost every game system including competitions in Warhammer Fantasy, 40K, Apocolypse, Flames of War, Napolonics, Historical & Magic the Gathering to name a few.
There are many demo/participation games including Wings of Glory, Dystopian Wars, Malaufex, Star Wars et al.

    Hi my Friend,

Cancon was always listed as a major con; I used the info simply as an example of formatting. I apologize for any miscommunication on my part; no offense was intended to any of our fellow wingmen across the globe.

Minor con medal lists updated. Thanks for supplying the info as requested.

    Hi Bob,

Origins is the Aerodrome's primary U.S. convention - our Lend Lease pilot joins us, the tournament, etc. As for GenCon, it is one of the largest gaming con in the country. I haven't attended it since the late 70s, but I hope to this year or next. I am not sure what the presence of WoG or SoG is there, or how it compares to Origins or other cons.

As the unofficial Adjutant for the Canadian Wing, could we consider some gaming events in another part of the North American Continent? Should I list all the events North of the 49th Parallel? Admittedly the presence of Wings of Glory isn't big. Yet.

I'm working on the local conventions, including BottosCon (November - Surrey, BC) and GottaCon (February - Victoria, BC). If I had unlimited funds and time, I'd be going to Trumpeter's Salute (April - Burnaby, BC) and VCon (October - Vancouver, BC).

There are many more, and I suspect that the Alberta Squadron is running events at the Sentry Box, if not at Cons in Calgary. Underground Con (June - Calgary, AB) and FallCon (October - Calgary, AB) are potential targets for board and mini gamers. Toronto and environs are rife with opportunities, too. I've been to gaming conventions in Ottawa (CanGames - May) and Halifax (Hal-Con - November), over the years, and they are still ongoing, if not hosting Wings of Glory events (yet).

So, none of these are hosting WoG like Origins or even Enfilade. But that is a very firm "yet". We need active Squadron Leaders like Darell [grumpybear] and I to lead the charge. There are real and tangible rewards, like medals from the 'drome at stake, if not just for all the fun to be had.

Have attended Guns of August and the Williamsburg Muster. Not huge, like Origins or Historicon but a very nice small event. I have met some real good people there and always have a good time in Richard's games. Get shot down a lot but have a good time.

Drop Eric a PM Mike. He will sort you out with suitable medal types for Canada, then Ken will award them just as he does for other medals after you apply for them.
I only let my Squadron Leaders request medals for cons on behalf of participants in order to obviate multiple requests inundating Ken, but with fewer events to keep an eye on in Canada, this may not be needed in your case.

I suppose Conpulsion probably counts as a minor convention since, although more in line with what they mean by a "con" in the US rather than a UK "Show" the wargame aspect is rather minor.
    http://www.geas.org.uk/conpulsion/
I think I need to have some words with them about still calling the game "Wings Of War".

I wonder what the Copyright Laws are about calling it WoW but using items from Wings of Glory on the table.

Historicon should be a major con. It is a wargaming con people come from UK and all over the USA.

“Mother of all wargaming conventions,” or so says the Wall Street Journal, has a new home. Historicon, the flagship convention of the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society, Inc (aka, HMGS East or just HMGS) and likely the largest event of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Some 2700 to 2800 of the faithful, make the annual pilgrimage to miniature wargaming’s “Mecca”.

I agree. As far as historical miniature conventions, its the big one. Not sure when but I thing early-mid 2000s attendance topped 4000 once or twice.

I agree. I've been doing this gaming thing for a long time, and while not much of a con goer, many of my friends are. Historicon has become THE wargaming con to go to in this area.

    Minor:

Ah, but did you play Wings of War/Wings of Glory at any of them? If not, that would be like me trying to claim credit for GenCon 2010, '08, '06 and Enfilade 2011 and '08...
