Today was day one of the above show, a nice 1 hour and a bit drive got me to Newbury Racecourse, then venue, if you have not been before I recomment, very easy to find , good facilities , ample free parking and lots to see.
for ourselves, we set up ready to start by 10:10, originally I did say Bullets and Eindekkers to start, but decided upon arrival to give a few new planes a trial, sorry Dave, so we started with 3 Nieuport 17 v 3 Halberstdts,
The crew ready for the first game, straight away we had someone asking to join in, little did we realise that this was the start of a continual session until we stopped for lunch at 13:40.
L-R our first punter collared at 10:00 ready to start playing at 10:10 Flash ( Dave) , Bogue ( Nigel )
flying the Halberstadts, well two of them, one looking a bit familiar to the erstwhile Frenchmen in the next pic but it had crosses on... hmm
L-R Andy, soon to be a regular forum member, Guntruck (Steve) and Armageddon (Ed, a new member of the Avon flight)
So the idea was a rolling games starting with the Nieuport 17 against a couple of Halberstadts and what is the strange plane
Both sides with typical tactical brilliance so loved by us gamers opposite each other and off we went hell for leather towards each other guns blazing as soon as possible.
once in the middle twists and turns , then two new punters meant the sides became 4 on 4, but what is that strange german plane
and again he turned up this time smoking,
finally it dawned on our French pilots... it was a captured Neiuport 17 , the same they were flying, captured by the dreaded Hun. ( Nicely painted there Dave )
Lots of twists and turns, saw casualties mount, but as one pilot was shot down they asked to play again so re-entered the fray.
Yes thats 14 cards for the downed Neiuport
Our catured French plane finally bit the dust
After two hours of non stop action we changed scenarios and went to our new game, syop the AEG from bombing the town.
Here two AEG IV with a Halberstadt fighter as escort go to bomb the town on the costal map.
Against them we had 5 Neiuport 17 and a lone Pup
The AEG both sprinted for the town, unfortunately the escort was soon left behind, so much that the pilot asked if he got out and pushed would he be able to move faster ( makes mental note, escort needs to be faster )
The AEG hotly pursued by the Entente, flown by complete novice pilots, a man and his son, but who soon picked up the game and really enjpyed themselves.
What did not help the Central pilots was after the first rounds of shooting, one rear gunner was Hors d'combat and one pilot wounded by our youngest gamer
Although the AEG are deceptibly fast ( K decks) this one was not fast enough
With one bomber going down, the killer blow by our young pilot, the last one made it , bombed the local chip shop on the beach ( the cad) and turned for home, hoping for a nice Bratwurst in the mess . Unlike the poor Halberstadt who only just got into the area as the AEG turned for home.
Unfortunately the AEG did not make it being shot down by... guess who
Yes it had to be really.
A quick 20 mins for lunch and away we went again with another rolling game, this time with three Pups taking on three Albatross DIII, again as a pilot was shot down, the pilot immediately returned with a new machine or a new player took over.
Fast and furious action.
After two hours we called time, but all pilots agreed it was a great time with a great game, a few new converts made.
Although we do have to mention one young man, who had never played before and manged to take out 4 pilots before going down himself, nearly an ace in one session
And here he is with the Albatross DII he flew. It took 18 cards to take him down
The last game of the day saw a faster game with 2 SE5a against a couple of Fokker DVII
Here my poor Sachsenberg being accosted from behind ( Im sure there is a law against that somewhere ) by McCuddens SE5
The aftermath
C4 bites the dust
oh no he didnt... I put the damage on the wrong plane...silly me , sorry chaps.
McCudden didnt last long after taking out Sachsenberg this left the last two make a couple of head on passes at each other.
Of course there could only have been one out come thinks I , Flying C4 although pilot wounded only 5 damage, how could I loose, yer reight
So ended day one.
A cracking time had by all, starting 10:10 and finished at 18:00 with a small brak, the only other break in action was when changing scenarios.
But with the help available we all were able to help, see around the show and have a couple of games.
So thanks to all for helping and we will have another go again tomorrow for Day two.
Keep tuned chaps. There are more pics in an album I have created named as Colours 2013
