Thread: Making a Maneuver Deck with photo prints - How To

Default Making a Maneuver Deck with photo prints - How To

This is something that I did today that turned out well, thought I would share for anyone who is interested.

So, I've got some Nieuport 11's that I bought from Shapeways... Or at least I will have them when they arrive next week. I thought I would get a head start on the Maneuver Deck while I await their arrival.

I looked up the Nieuport 11 and read that it uses an E Maneuver Deck. I found an E Deck PDF here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/dow...p?do=cat&id=43

I tried printing the deck out on card stock, through my ink jet printer. I didn't like the weight and feel of the test card. On top of that, the colors were flat and lifeless. I considered trying it on inkjet photo paper, but I didn't have any on hand. I would have to make a run to the local Wal-Mart to buy some.... Then it hit me...

Why not just have them printed in the Wal-Mart's 1-Hour photo lab on real photo paper?!

So, after a little thought, I opened up Photo Shop and built the templates that I wanted printed. I put a single card and it's back on a 4x6. Put it in the middle of the 4x6, more or less. There will be some variation as they are printed and you don't want your photo lab trimming anything off.

I also laid in a square of black under the card. There is precisely 1/4 inch of black on the left and on the right of the cards. You will also notice that I put a bit of space between the card front and back as well. This space between is important, and I'll explain it later. Anyway, once printed they look something like this:

Size: 75.4 KB

I suggest that you use a lab that can print a satin finish, rather than glossy. The satin doesn't finger print so easily.

The next step is to carefully trim the excess white off of the left and right sides, but leave the white on the top and bottom.

    Name: IMG_1165.jpg
Views: 2517
Size: 84.5 KB

Next carefully fold it in half. You can use the black to help line everything up square.

    Name: IMG_1166.jpg
Views: 1994
Size: 90.7 KB

Crease it as much as you can.

    Name: IMG_1167.jpg
Views: 2004
Size: 93.7 KB

Next, use a clamp to hold the card on the excess white while you spray the unprinted side with adhesive. The clamp allows you to avoid getting any adhesive on your fingers, but keeps you in control.

EDIT TO ADD: The use of a clamp to hold your card as you spray the adhesive is important. I originally tried just laying the card in the cardboard box to spray, but the force of the spray moved the card around and just enough adhesive made its way to the front of the print to cause a sticky problem and a ruined card. By using the clamp to hold the card, I was able to get the adhesive ONLY where I needed it and NOT on the face of the print OR my fingers. The folding was much simpler and the card remained clean and free of sticky goo.

    Name: IMG_1170.jpg
Views: 1981

This is the adhesive that I used, but I expect that most spray adhesives would work.

You need to let the glue tack up a bit, so set the card down for a minute or so. If you have others folded already, I found I could spray 6 or 7 cards while the first one tacked up.

Once tacky, go ahead and fold it over.

Use a cylinder of some sort to roll it completely flat. I just used a round drinking glass that I had handy. If your wife isn't looking, swipe her rolling pin out of the kitchen!

Set your folded cards aside to dry. I let mine go over night, but it probably only needs a couple hours.

Now, trim the black off of all four sides. Don't worry about rounding the corners, we'll do that later.

    Name: IMG_1175.JPG

Because we left some space (about 1/8th of an inch) between the card front and back when we laid it out, we are able to remove the creased portion of the card. This will give us an end product that is uniform on all four sides.

Now we have a card that is nearly finished. All that is left is to round off the corners.

    I used one of these...

    Name: IMG_1185.jpg
Views: 1965
Size: 71.6 KB

Very simple to clip the corners...

    Name: IMG_1189.jpg
Views: 1973
Size: 74.2 KB

    And the finished product...

Size: 60.9 KB

The entire E Deck, including the Airplane card cost me about $4.50 to print and took about 90 minutes of actual working time to put together (not including the initial layout, which would probably take me about an hour now that I've done it once already if I want to do a different deck later).

They look good, far better than the card stock card I tried first. They also feel right, as far as weight and stiffness is concerned.

    Those look pretty nice David.

I have never seen cutters like those, but I will be heading to a craft store for sure.

Wonderfully done! I love it when a plan comes together-great idea and execution. I can see a digital library of all our decks and lines of players at all the photo shops around the world! Well done! Can you post them with the black backgrounds as we go? Everyone who does a letter deck could contribute . . . ,the elves are looking for some work . . .

    Sure, no problem!

Print 2 of the stall card, 3 straights, 3 left turns, 3 right turns, and 1 of each of the rest. If you right click and save as each card, the file name I used also tells you how many copies are needed for the deck.

EDIT to add: I've just learned that the Climbing and Diving Turn cards are unofficial, so be sure to pull them from your deck unless you are using that particular House Rule.

I've uploaded the Photo Shop file template, which will make it easy to lay in other decks cards, as well as change the Deck letter on the card back. It's awaiting moderation approval. Once approved, I'll link it here too.

If you want to use a card back of your own, feel free to just lay it over mine. This card back is just one I threw together quickly. This was mostly a proof of concept test for me.

I couldn`t help noticing that you have a couple of "Climbing Turn" and "Diving Turn" cards in there.
These are a good idea but are unofficial "extra" cards added to some of the downloadable templates in the files section.
Might cause some confusion if you ever end up playing against someone using an official deck.

I must say I really want one of those knives, It would remove a lot of frustration caused by the use of scissors or modeling knives!

I wondered about the climbing and diving turns. Thanks for the clarification. I'll pull them out, but keep them on hand just in case I fly with someone who uses that House rule. I've added a line above explaining that those are unofficial cards.

I have also added a further explanation of the importance of using a clamp of some sort to hold the card while spraying the adhesive.

Here's an N Deck. Same thing, if you "right click" and save as, you'll see the file name indicates how many of that card to have printed. Includes climbing and diving turn cards which may not be legal cards where you play.

    Enjoy!

I've got an L Deck laid out, but not sure if I should keep filling this thread up with the image files. Working on trying to figure out how to upload them as a group into an album or as a file upload. That said, I will dump them into this thread if somebody would like them sooner rather than later.

EDIT to Add: I've got a B Deck ready now as well. I know that B Decks are fairly common, but I like to have 1 Deck for every plane, and I've got a plane coming from Shapeways that will need a B Deck. So, B is now ready if anyone would like to have it.

Hmmm... I have just discovered that the image files are being resized by the uploader.

If anyone would like these images at full resolution and size e-mailed to them in a .rar file, send me a Private Message with your e-mail address.

So far, I have the E, N, L, and B Decks laid out. Planning to do the K Deck next and then whichever Deck is appropriate for the Halberstadt CLII (anyone know off the top of their heads?).

    EDIT: K is now ready

    IMPORTANT

Ok everyone... Since the site uploader is altering the size of the images when I add them to this thread, I have set up a Mediafire account and uploaded all of the decks that I have done so far to it. I've also uploaded the basic psd files too. I strongly suggest that you should download the properly sized full resolution versions rather than doing the "right click" and "save as" thing from this thread.

My sincere apologies for any confusion that this may have caused. I wish I had caught the problem earlier.

You can find them here: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/cssi...of_Glory_Decks

I'm going to continue adding decks to this Mediafire folder as I get them laid out.

That will be a lot easier for everyone I think.

The Official Unofficial Stats committee gave it a J* deck. That is, a J deck omitting one sideslip either side.
I have been led to believe by Andrea that current thinking (subject to change) is for a new V deck which is the same as our J* deck.

In the meantime, I suggest doing a standard J deck, then remove cards as needed.

I was reading Flying Officer Kyte's AAR: Bring them all Home Boys (found here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...(The-Bulldogs) ) yesterday and saw the House Rule Critical Hits Deck in use.

I like how it added depth to the game experience.

So, I decided to prep some images to make a deck for myself. Here's a sample of what it looks like.

Thanks, but I didn't do all of the work on it. I downloaded the cards from the "Files" area ((found here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/dow...o=file&id=1188 )) and just whipped up a quick card back and made them work with my photo card template. So, somebody else did most of the design work.

    David,
LOL! Absolutely LOVE the Boom card back!

I will print them up and put them in the sleeves with my critical hit cards.

I agree that boom deck is fantastic, I shall replace mine with those. Thanks to all who contributed to it.

    Thanks!

If there are any particular decks that anyone would like to have done up, I'm more than willing to whip them up. I've gotten to where I can do up the image files for a Maneuver deck in about 20 minutes.

As of now, I have; B, D, E, G, J, K, L, N, and the Boom Deck done and available in .rar form at http://www.mediafire.com/folder/cssi...of_Glory_Decks

Just download the ones you want, unpack the files, send the files to your local photo finisher for printing, and then follow the directions in the first few posts of this thread to make the cards.

    Enjoy!

I decided to try out the solo rules for fun. Thought I would do a Balloon Busting Mission, but I don't own any Balloon models. So, I made a Balloon card. It prints out as an 8x10. You can find the full resolution file at: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/cssi...of_Glory_Decks

    Very nice work David.

The colors do pop, especially on the Boom card.

    Thanks for the links.

I've added the P Deck and the R Deck to my collection on Mediafire: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/cssi...of_Glory_Decks

Don't forget that the decks include optional Climbing and Diving turns that are not official. If your group doesn't use those House Rules, be certain to remove them from your decks.

I also added a PhotoShop file which is a template for a simple Tuck Box that you can use to make boxes for your decks. The Deck letter is editable in PhotoShop if you have the font "duality".

So I've been thinking...there are a few places around the web that will do custom playing cards and such. For example, http://www.printerstudio.com/persona...mini-size.html will do custom front and back cards that are 1.75'' x 2.5'' (44.45mm x 63.5mm). Up to 64 cards for $4.39 plus shipping (the calculator said 1 deck would be $2.99 shipping. Now, the 44.45mm x 63.5mm dimensions are not quite the same as the WoG cards (44mm x 68mm I believe, please someone correct me if I am wrong), but I'm thinking that if I order an XA deck, or a full damage deck that I don't intend to mix with other cards, as long as I was careful and the start and end arrows fit on the card, does the size difference matter? For damage decks, I would say it would be perfect. The plane cards have to be the same exact size, but that is the only type of card that I think it wouldn't work for. What do you guys think? Anyone tried it?

Excellent How to- Dave, I've just received a batch of these from my local photo lab (officeworks) & they're awesome! Now I just have to trim them & glue them. Have finished an R deck for my shapeways Bristol Scout, next is some D decks for some Sopwith Pups!

I suppose I'll also have to paint these aircraft too...

Great! I'm pleased that you are enjoying them!

On another note, I've recently added the XB and XC decks to the Mediafire account if anyone needs them. http://www.mediafire.com/folder/cssi...of_Glory_Decks

Also, the decks on Mediafire have all been converted over to Guntruck's version of the card faces. Eventually, I will be making another pass through the decks so that they each have all of the card numbers. In the current iteration you print several of the same card for straights, for instance. So you might have three of the #1 card instead of one each of #1, #2, and #3. Not a big issue from a playable stand point, but it chafes my OCD tendencies just a little.

this system of making cards is pretty awesome, any chance to make the approved ace cards with the tournmanet cost in it, even i was thinking on adding a round sticker with the plane cost for tournmanets to add to the plane card. is it viable ?

That shouldn't be hard to do, but I would need someone to provide the reference material necessary. I don't have any of the Ace cards as reference.

As for adding plane costs to the plane cards, that too would be easy to do. I have some plane cards that I made for myself that I added the ceiling and climb rate info. Adding tourney cost would be simple.
